LOS ANGELES — Authorities are investigating the theft of nearly 100 fire hydrants in Los Angeles County this year, sheriff’s officials said Monday.

Some 85 hydrants have been stolen in unincorporated areas of the county, and another 14 in Lynwood, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The department’s Century Station has partnered with the LASD Major Crimes Bureau to investigate the thefts.

“These incidents significantly threaten public safety and disrupt essential emergency services … Our investigators are working diligently to identify and apprehend those responsible for the thefts,” sheriff’s officials said in a statement.

“Fire hydrants play a crucial role in ensuring effective fire response and public safety, and their removal can have serious consequences. Rest assured, our top priorities are the safety and well-being of our community. We are fully committed to swiftly resolving this matter and ensuring all fire hydrants are restored and functioning properly,” the statement added.

Thieves take the hydrants in hopes of selling them at metal recycling yards, officials told Fox 11.

Nothing new, they were doing that 15 years ago before I retired. San Bernardino and Riverside County sheriff created a task force and pretty much put a stop to it in six months. Made all the recyclers get Identification from all scrapers and threatened to shut them down if they didn't. It was still working when I retired in 2010, imagine there's 5 times the thieves today.

There was a spat of drain grates stolen from freeway shoulders in the Richmond, CA area back in the day when I was still working. These things are I'd guess 36" X 30" X 2' deep. At least a hundred pounds. Never heard of anyone driving into the gaping hole but I'm sure it happened.

Our river HOA just replaced 2 fire hydrants. $23k!

Why, street price is $30
😁

This is what happens when we become a drug addicted 3rd world county with no reproductions for crime .
If any item, no matter the cost or importance, can bring $20 for a “hit” it is subject to theft.

Reminds me of when they started installing aluminum light posts in Florida to reduce traffic fatalities Guys would knock them over with their truck then throw them in the bed and take them to the recycler.

A solo collision about two miles away along the 300 block of West Maple Avenue in Monrovia was discovered by officers while tracking the package.

Two people were inside the vehicle, with the driver pronounced dead at the scene and a passenger taken to a hospital for moderate injuries.

What did they put in the box along with the tracker? A rattlesnake?

Makes me wonder, do they do the same for people scrapping catalytic converters? If not, maybe they should.🤣

Blaze Pizza is relocating the chain’s Pasadena headquarters to Atlanta.

The company announced this week that the move, expected to be completed by September, is part of its growth strategy. The chain is in 39 states with more than 300 restaurants – with roughly one-third of the eateries in California.

Unlike other companies that have departed the Golden State, Blaze’s statement on its relocation sounded sort of sentimental.

“California is where this brand was born more than a decade ago, and we have tremendous heart for communities across the state where so many of our restaurants are,” said Beto Guajardo, CEO of Blaze Pizza. “Moving our corporate headquarters to Atlanta will help us drive our next wave of growth.”

Blaze said that of its approximately 60 corporate employees, the majority will remain remote workers “with the small percentage of Southern California-based employees being offered relocation opportunities at Blaze Pizza’s Atlanta office. The more than 7,500 restaurant-level employees are not part of this reorganization and will not be affected.”

Blaze Pizza was founded in 2011 in Pasadena by Rick and Elise Wetzel of Wetzel’s Pretzels fame. Its first location was opened in Irvine the next year.

The company has gone through some changes in recent years. The Wetzels sold their stake in 2020. CEO Guajardo joined Blaze in January 2023. Shortly after that, Brad Kent, Blaze’s co-founder and the cooking smarts behind the concept, left.

Blaze has attracted some high-profile investors including NBA star LeBron James, former California First Lady Maria Shriver, movie producer John Davis, and private equity firm Brentwood Associates.

And the menu is in transition, too. Earlier this year, Blaze added meatballs. Then last week the chain announced its “most significant menu revamp in its history,” which includes five revamped pizzas: a meat-lover’s pie, a vegetarian pie, a meatball pie, a chicken BBQ/ranch pie, and a four-cheese offering.

This exit follows other Southern California corporate departures in recent months including Neutrogena to New Jersey, QuickFee (Texas), Oak View Group (Colorado), and Unical Aviation (Arizona).
