At $150k most people are building a car so nice they are scared to drive it.

You can build a nice quality and performing car for $50- $70k and run it hard
That’s what speared the IROC project. We did this Nova (mostly him and the guys at JCG restorations and DSE) and he just wouldn’t drive it because it was “too nice” and cost too much to fix. He wanted something nice but not 150k nice. He sold it and it’s in Havasu supposedly.

Back in the 90's, a guy in Glendora built a yellow one. Pro street, but extremely detailed build...stuff that most would not even notice, like raising the rear wheel well openings just shy of an inch, and stretching them 1" forward and 2.5" back...the damn roll cage and underside were color sanded, cut and buffed. I think it was on the cover of Car Craft (?) two years in a row, once in bare metal fitting stage, and then done. Car had a clutch 400 in it...weird but cool.

When he was done with it, he never drove it! I mean he may have taken it down the street, and backed it out of the garage, but he didn't ever "drive" it. I know he ended up selling the car in 95 or 96. Saw it on the road once. Haven't seen nor heard of it's whereabouts in years...

It was an 84 tub. I sold everything else prior to doing that, and just needed the tub to be gone. It hurt believe me, but not as much as the dent and scratch on the tailgate of my truck. 🤬🙄
84' ya say.... think we're just fine with that treatment.

If you want a fast Fox Mustang, you’ll need to go EV. This would be an interest 4 year project.

I'd enter "project" on bring a trailer and be opportunistic on a project that is not finished. Unfinished projects typically sell for a fraction of cost to date.

maybe I missed it, but what’s the intended purpose of the finished project vehicle? Daily driver, weekend cruiser, drag racing, off-road, etc?

I’d probably do something 90s to ‘00s for a daily driver. Weekend cruiser, I’d go pre-smog. Hard to find a ‘bargain’ project vehicle anymore as car enthusiasts keep shifting to less popular models. I would also think about parts availability when making a choice (OEM, aftermarket- performance and reproduction, and used-junkyard).

I would think an off-road toy would be cool as hell and functional, plus tons of bolt-on stuff to make it “built not bought” without needing an engineering degree.

Something like a Ford Ranger or Tacoma.

Super cool that you have this kinda relationship with your son.

i didn’t have that with my dad, but i’m gonna break that cycle and have that kinda relationship with my two boys

I have a fox body Mustang, turbo efi 66 bug, and currently building a 55 bel air. Here's my input.

There are so many reproduction parts for all three cars, with the bug being the cheapest, followed by the fox body. Everything for the bel air is expensive, and it requires a lot more metal work, due to it's age. You can build a fox body that is fast, fun and relatively safe pretty easily, but smog is a nightmare, even if your running stock power. I probably won't build another smog car in CA, unless it's something new.

The bug is probably my favorite car, so many affordable parts and very easy to work on, but don't bother if it's not your thing.

I'm really excited about the Belair, but it will probably be 3-4× more expensive to build than my other cars, which is probably the case for most classic cars

I worked at a pizza place all thru high school, graduated in 1989.

One of the owners of the pizza place - R&R’s Pizza in Tustin on Redhill - had a new ‘89 Mustang LX hatchback, black on gray fabric with a manual trans, swapped to 3.73 rear end, and he let me take it to prom.

I literally felt like the king of world…i vividly remember every damned detail of that car like it was yesterday. The texture of the seats, how the shifter felt, the acceleration which was insane back then.

I hadn’t thought about that car in years…this thread really takes me back 👍

We did this same thing for our son when he was 12. We researched cars and found something he had an interest in. He picked a Jeep Scrambler. The trick was finding a driver that just needed cleaning up and some cool factor added to it. That way the project was fun and not overwhelming. In the process he was able to learn to swap a transmission, do a clutch, rebuild a carb, install a lift kit/wheels/tires, stereo system, replace interior, bumpers, all the simple stuff. The most fun part for the kids is picking out all the new parts. He spent hours staring at that rig and trying to figure out what to do to change it up. It served him well thru high school and he was able to make a few bucks on it when he sold it and moved on to college.

Yeah, they're badass. He'll regret selling it someday.
This used to be a cool build to suit shop in Laguna Beach Canyon... looks as if they've moved to simple service. Back in 90s their lot was full of yummy CJ5 & 8s that were built ground up. Not beemy enough for me but always thought they were cool.

So many cool cars. Nieghbor Ed went the big tire Toyota pickup route with Josh, s 4 cyl 4 speed, " That Kid's not going anywhere fast..!" He still has that truck today. Brandon's truck got sandwiched Josh and Brandon graduated in 2009.

We went a with more of street driver school/tow vehicle, a 97 Dakota club cab with airbags. Nice little 5.2 TBI A518, fibreglass bed cover. Barely adequate for towing, too light. Great fun backing down misty early morning ramps! 🌄 Going up was not the problem. Truckload of kids, gear and a bag of cement over each rear wheelwell. Lol 😆

The airbags sure came in handy when the truck was totaled in a chain reaction rear-end collision right in front of the high school after school.

Illegal in a minivan illegal turns in front of oncoming traffic, gets t-boned. Cited. 4 vehicles involved. Little car behind the lady who tboned the minivan was crushed, 2 guys ok, she was OK. Brandon was OK. New vehicle brakes are way better now, than that Dakota with rear drums, which I knew did not stop well. But it did hold up good, PD said he did good, not at fault.
Airbag beat that kid up. Soo glad I had that heavy fiberglass cap off.

So. Big fan of full size regular cab shortbeds. 4 wheel disc brakes, and airbags. If I were to do it again, now,,

Same parameters, Full size truck.
I know none of this is vintage but it's relatively cheap. And safe.

Something 2000ish and up in a Chevy. 5.3. You could even go crazy and go 8.1 Avalanche.

2004,-6ish and up in a Ram, Durango. 4.7, 5.9.
Insufficient cooling in Durangos prior to 2004. Trucks were ok.
If van, MPI Magnum motors 94. up.

A 2014 Ram 1500 reg cab V6 Shorty driver. $10K.


In a Ford, anything with a 5.0. right? 😆

On to the new!

2023 Ford reg cab Shorty 4×4 with a 5.0, $43K, new, Lubbock.

No new 2023 Ram reg cab Shorty 'Classic,' available from factory, learned yesterday. LB yes. Shortys, no.
2 on a lot within 500 miles.
V6 Longbed, V6 tow, locking diff, delete tip start, $44K.
Shorty, tow, $42K. Both 2wd.
Crazy what trucks are these days..

This is/was My Son and My first vehicle project together when He was 15 , This car litterally changed his life The second (408 Windsor) engine finally ended up in his boat when He bought a new Silvarado

I was in escrow in a canyon home nearby in '95 and kids were youngins so we walked down there and they let us take out a sweet red CJ8 for a cruise. No questions asked kinda Laguna chill situation. The two owners told me they grab old CJs all over PNW and bring em down to that shop and basically build to suit. Just felt like such a cool vibe in that place ... very Lagunaish.... We had two monster danes and kids were growing like weeds so decided on busting out an '89 Burb square body beast instead... My wife called it the Cattle Mover cause it smelled like surf boys & dogs

The fox bodies were a blast, 3.73's really woke them up.
With stock gears, 1st and second felt like 1000hp and you couldn't keep the car straight......then you hit 3rd gear and it was all over in a very calm, slow rev toward 5000 :p

Did you figure out what project your gonna get yet?
I’m gonna head to the next Pomona swap meet while browsing fox body mustangs until that time. Unfortunately by the time I realized it was this past Sunday it was late Saturday night and he was already asleep.

That’s where I picked up my 65.

Yeah that’s a car guy problem. I can’t stand unfinished projects.
I’ve thought of this dynamic and this process. I thought about starting with an engine and building an engine with him and then finding the car to put it in rather than the other way around. Start building a 5.0 and then the right body.
