F350 owners (CVRA) DMV

Looking to buy an f350, specifically looking for derated. Found one, 11400 gvwr. According to the 4008 dmv form (California) it says trucks with no modifications that are less than 8001 unladen and 11499 gvwr are excluded.

I’ve spoken to 5 dmv reps over the phone, all difference answers. Some say, still have to pay cvra, some say I have to pay cvra, but don’t need to fill out form? One person said if I’m not using for a business, it doesn’t apply. I don’t think anyone has a clue on this cvra crap.

What’s everyone’s experience with this fee? I’m not going to use for business, just towing my boat in the summer months. And eventually maybe one day use for a 5th wheel travel trailer.

If I still have to pay cvra fee for a derated f350 with low payload, I might as well find one with 12000gvwr with higher payload.

Can someone help, who’s been through this already.

I literally read it back to the rep, they apologized and said sorry you’d still have to pay. Doesn’t make sense. Crazy thing is, I don’t see any f350s in my area with weight decals on them. I’ve seen one, but he had a utility bed (business).

I went through this with my dually. If you’re ever towing more than you register it for you could potentially pay a sizeable fine. Is it likely, not sure

Ultimately, I registered it for its max towing capacity just to be safe. Didn’t want any potential issues if I was in an accident towing my 5th wheel or boat even though it’s not likely. I just didn’t want to deal with it if I had to deal with a rookie deputy Dewey who wanted to justify his worth lol

I never received weight decals. Maybe it’s the difference between business use versus recreational use.

I want the extra payload. Which is why I’m looking for a f350. It’s more than enough for my needs right now, but for future needs… I don’t want to have to shop for a new truck, to buy a bigger toy.

No business here, all personal/recreational. So weight stickers are for business only? However cvra fees still apply right? Do you f350 owners see the cvra fee on your registration?

Not sure.. I called Aaa, they said they only deal with standard auto registration and referred to me DMV. I didn’t give them much info, just asked if they could elaborate more about cvra.

So you pay the cvra fee; but don’t need the stickers right? The cvra fee shows on your registration?

If the registration shows just the weight of the truck. You need cvra fees paid for additional weight.

For personal I am not sure on the answer. As the wight fees on my personal trucks don't spec a gross weight. My work trucks I have to chose 15-20 or 26k sticker for gross.

I just know our local commercial enforcement will write up any 3500 or f350 and let the judge decide. It's big money industry. As in the first year they paid off the million dollar grant and added 2 more to the fleet. Culver city is the notorious one and regularly targets Wilmington and by the port nowhere near CC.

CC was always pulling over our LACity trucks as we crossed in and out of their city. They didn't like our 5 gallon buckets hanging from the air compressor by wraps of #14 wire.

I have my personal F350 with paid to 26,000. Have the sticker on magnetic backing. Put the sticker on when I tow, take them off when I don't want anyone to know.
If I'm in the city and park in a yellow zone, put the stickers on.

It’s my understanding that the only thing that’s different from the f250 and f350 is the f350 get the beefier axles and added leaf springs, hence the extra payload. It’s a shame to have to buy a f350 for this reason…but it is what it is. I’m positive the f250 can do the same job but the sticker on the door jam says different.

They said read the sticker on the door. Did that and they said nope.

I guess this is why, back in the day....GM made the 1500HD (8 lug) and Ford made an 8 lug F150.....to get around this bullshit. I never realized that it was that big of an issue.

I’ve been getting quotes, all they require is vin, well at least with AAA. But that’s a good call out for other people shopping as well.

The crazy and interesting thing is..the several trucks I’ve inquired about, I’ve asked the owners if they pay a cvra fee, and all tell me they do not. Some have said they don’t even know about it. So this is more confusing.

It's definitely a pain in the ass. Try getting a CA number even worse. When I got flagged into the checkpoint in front of the concrete recycling plant. Chp asked for CA number. I tried for a few months to get it and they wouldn't issue it to me. Luckily I had a 26k sticker on the truck. Still do.

The next week I went and bought a 2500 and registered it to my name not my business. Drive right on by there checkpoint. But if you have the safer vehicle for the job (dually) your get flagged in.
