Well here is a little story/background on my deal. I grew up going to Parker since I was about 15 months old, since the time I could tell the difference in brands of boats I have always wanted a Schiada 21' RC. Well not having alot of money I could not afford what I wanted (ski race style), so 5 years ago after knowing that I was not getting younger I bought the next best thing (what you see in the following photos). I boated with it for four years and last year I tore it down to start the rehab, my only regret is that I did not do it sooner.......buy one that is :D.

It is a '77 that needed a little work when I bought it but did not mind, after all in my mind I new what I would do with it some day. The boat ran great and I could not believe the ride, I had never rode in one......not even this one before I bought it. As I had said I spent 4 years charging up and down Parker and back and forth on Havasu all the while buying parts that my funds would allow for the future upgrade (some new most used.......man I love eBay). Well at the end of the year ('08) I noticed the motor was leaning pretty bad so I figured what better time to start the redo, so here ya go.

Thanks, Chris.

Well this is where I am at so far, just picked up my last piece of material for the new stringers (vertical grain clear doug fir......stuff is hard to find). The boat is kept at my Dads in Havasu so I don't get alot of time to work on it (I do not have the room at my house) but it gives me another reason to go to the lake......like I need one, but most of all it gives me time to hang with my pop who is the one that got me into this boating stuff in the first place :thumbsup:D, thanks Dad!!! I have more pics of pretty much the same thing but I think you get the picture.

Great thread. I like seeing projects like this. Are you going to reuse the volvo drive or are you going to install something different?

No I am not reusing the outdrive setup, I am switching over to vdrive/trans. I sold the complete drive set up with the steering, trim pump, wiring, etc. to some ol boy back East off of eBay.

Bob Stanfield.

Hi Bob, how have you been, my Dad and I met you at the last Schiada get together in Sept. at Blue Water and sat around talking waiting for everybody/boats to show up, I don't know if you remember. I hope you are feeling better and things are good for you and your daughter Lisa. I was sorry to hear you had trouble at the Knot-a gathering but looks like the day turned out pretty good for you. Thank you very much for the offer to get mesurements, I may have to take you up on that for some things.
So far the project has been a blast for me, I love to challenge myself. It will be a slow build because I am trying to do it myself and when I have the time I don't seem to have the extra funds and vise a versa, I think most can relate to that on some level. I will keep posting pics as I progress, maybe now that I started this thread I will put some extra psi on my self to 'git-r-done

Thanks again for the offer,
Chris.

Right on about changing to V-drive, a lot of work for sure but my opinion the way a Schiada should be built. Good luck with the build can't wait to see the final product.

Hi Dave, the motor will be a BBC base that will be 540 cubic inches with a twin turbo Gentry setup from Carson Brummet. It won't be anything wazoo just small turbos and carbs, what I call old school. I am not looking to set the water on fire just a simple lake boat.

Ask away Dave, I may not be able to answer them but I will do my best :D. I have had many tell me that I am about as sharp as a marble for doing this but that just motovates me even more.....not to prove anything to anybody else just my self.

Hey HD, don't give up on your dreams to own one. I wanted one since I was a kid and shopped hard for 7 years before I found one I could afford, was not exactly what I wanted but I will get it there.

Awesome project! I'm sure stan will chime in with some of his expertise on these things, remember don't glass the bulkheads to the deck, let the deck sit on a pad on top of the bulkhead. We don't want to see all that hard work end up with gel cracks!

Everybody I know that does it glasses the bulkheads to hte deck? They just leave between a 1/8th and 1/4 inch of space between the bulkhead wood and the actual boat.. They then "tab it in" with fiberglass?

I might be wrong on that, but that's the way I was told to do it?

Question #1 for a guy like myself that has never done this before?

What are you doing here?

I notice in this pic the boat has all 4 stringers..

attachment.php

In this pic it looks like your building some stringer alignment fixture for when you install new stringers? I noticed you did not include the outer stringers in the patterns.. It looks as though they have already been removed. (assuming that's what your doing?) Why?

attachment.php

So what exactly is all this about? Fixture for installing new stringers?

What is holding the hull completely straight now that there are no stringers in the boat?

Hey Dave, in the first picture I am removeing the sub floor to get to the stringers. After boating for 4 summers after buying the boat I noticed that the motor was leaning pretty bad, what I thought was a broken motor mount turned out to be the stringer collapasing and the mount pulling through. I had alaways planed on converting over to a V drive set up so I just figured what better time to start.

This pic is of the rotton stringer-
pic30.JPG

This is a piece of said stringer-
pic65.JPG

As it turned out I also had a broken motor mount that you can see here-
pic21.JPG

The second part of your question is yes I built a jig to keep the new main stringers straight when reinstallition time comes but I have since scraped this idea as I am going to set the new stringers a little father apart. The old ones were set at 25" apart and from all of the newer boats I have checked out they were between 27" & 28" apart. From talking to people it is for better clearence of oil coolers, H2o pumps, alt., etc.

As far as the bottom being straight when the new stringers go back in I am planing on setting the boat on stands, one at each rear corner on the chine at the back and one up in the front in the center where it starts to V. So the bottom will sort of be floating with no high or low points caused by the trailer or a dolly. Once the new stringers are in I will be flipping the boat over and doing the whole bottom (blue printing :p) at the time I install the drop thru strut and prop wash plate.

I hope this sort of answered your questions, if not please let me know and I will try again. I am not saying this is the only way or the right way for that matter just the way I am doing it

Thanks for the questions,
Chris.

Hey Racey, that is a problem that the boat had, 3/4" plywood bulkhead/kick board wedged under the deck to where you could see the bumps on the outside of the deck. When I cut the old one out the deck relaxed some, the bad part is that the damage was done and it left stress cracks on both sides. Even worse is the stress cracks are in the textured/non skid area :swear pain to fix. But being that I need to fill the 3" holes from the clam shell air intakes from the old covered motor set up I may just remove the outer band of texture around the boat, plus it will make it easier to cap the hull.

I have as Dave said always heard that you leave a gap at the top of the bulk head and "Tab" it in with glass cloth. But when talking with Lee he said that they run like a 12" long by 6" wide by 3/4" piece of ply between the deck and bulkhead at the outer edges so as always I continue to go through life confused:headscratch:

I think if you suspend the boat like that it would want to "bow" and add a bunch of rocker to the hull?

Well sorry that I just disapeared and I wish I could tell you all some exiciting story of making crazy amounts of money or worldly travels or the like but I am afraid it has just been real life. My Dad had another heart attic at the end of May and was hospitalized for 6 days which in that time they tried to do surgery. Once they got inside they found that the heart was so damaged (scar tissue, 4th heart attic) and his veins were like tissue paper and were colapasing there was nothing they could do for him. So they told him that they would try to control things with some new meds and what not.

Well over the next few weeks things did not go so well and Dads heart was only pumping at about 40% of what it should. So with the poor circulation he was having alot of pain in his legs because the heart was not strong enough to pump the blood back to the heart (if you have ever worked with your arms above your head for an extended amount of time that is the pain/feel X10). Well he lost the abillity to drive and then a week or so later pretty much walk........in a nut shell he lost his indapendance. On Sunday June 28,2009 he could no longer take the pain and took his own life.

I know alot of people have very strong feelings about suicide and I am not saying that I condon it but in my Dads case I understand it, to be in so much physical pain and I am sure some mental pain also as to leave everything and everyone behind is something none of us can understand until we live in another persons life. I have always had the upper most respect for my Dad and I still do, He was always in the drivers seat, including at the end.

It has been a little over 4 month since his passing and I still feel like I am living in a snow globe and somebody keeps shaking the f-ing thing. I am still torn up over loseing him (crying like a baby as I type this), he was always the father figure to me but until he was gone I never realized he was more than that.....he was a best friend!!! My Dad and Mom got me started in boating and when I lost my Mom to brain cancer 21 years ago my Dad and I became even closer. He lived in Havasu for the last 12+ years so it was just natural for him and I to do boating projects together, his was a 28' Campbell complete redo and mine the 21' Schiada seen in this thread.

Well I was supposed to go up on July 2 to spend the Fourth of July with Dad (first 4th in 2 years because of work) and then I had set some time aside (10 days) and him and I were going to fit the new stringer material to my boat and button up some lose ends on his. Obviously this did not happen, honestly if you would have caught me on the right day I would have given you my boat. It has been very hard to say the least to go to the house let alone get the motavation to work on my boat, when I am there I keep looking over my sholder to see him or have him come walking through the door any second.

So anyway I was bumming pretty hard this last week (feeling sorry for myself) so I bailed and went to the lake. I had to force myself but I did work a little on my boat, I ground out all around the holes I will be filling and the sides where I will be lengthing/straighting them since I wont have interior side panels to cover them. I know it's not alot when I look at the amount of work that needs to be done but it felt good.......except for the itching. Here are a couple pics that I got, Oh and thanks for letting me run on.

Very sorry to hear about your dad, it sounds like you guys had some great times. If you have kids pass on the same guidance and lessons he taught you, that's a great legacy for your dad. It sounds like you are who you are because of your dad. I have tried to raise my son the way I thought was best and he has turned out to be a pretty good kid. I didn't have much to go on since I only saw my dad twice, once when I was 5 and again when I was 39, so compared to me you're pretty lucky. Times will get better, just think, 'what would dad do' and you'll be fine. On a more serious note, get your ass in that in that Schiada and grab some tools mister.

Greg

Let me know if you need any help on this project, I don't need much of an excuse to go to the river.

Thanks everybody for the well wishes, I am not married nor do I have any kids but I have 3 of the best friends that a somebody could ask for. I called each of them the morning after my Dads passing to let them know and each one dropped everything and came to Havasu and stayed with me for a week, they even went with me to give me support when I was making arrangments. I have knowen all three of these guys for almost 30 years each and met all of them after high school........good group of guys!!! Thanks again everybody.

Sorry to hear about your father. However a good project just like rebuilding a Schiada might be the best thing for ya. It will keep your mind off of things that would bum you out and focused on fun things like the boat. It looks like oyu had to replace teh stringers as well as the transom. I had to do teh exact same thing to my 10 foot schiada. It is a pain but will all be worth it in the long run. Good luck on the build.

Chris -
Very sorry to hear that. I don't know what to say, except that you seem like the type of person that will take what you have, learn from it and get going again. Your father sounds like a wonderful man and he obviously did a great job raising you. Make him proud and keep doing the things you love, be in charge of your destiny, sounds like that is what he would be telling you.

XO
B

p.s. stay on top of your health. I'm not sure of your fathers condition, 4X heart attacks, but just watch out for heart disease. It's a horrible thing.

Thanks for the kind words Miss B, I hear you on the health deal I used to tease my Dad and tell him he was my crystal ball into my future. I have never smoked, I don't drink (couple of beers a year), and I am not a big fan of red meat but do eat it now and then and now that I have Dads dog I walk a mile to mile and a half every night after work so at least I am trying :D.

Well I finally made some time to get some work done on the boat and was able to finish sanding/grinding on the floor and also got the two main inner stringers cut/fit, wow I am glad I don't do this for a living .

It felt really good to get some work done on it especially work that is going forward and not still tearing things apart. Next time I get up to work on it I will be doing the outside stringers and making patterns/cutting the balsa for the floor :party2:.

Great work, make sure you put a good radius on the top of the stringers or you won't get the glass to wrap over and you will end up with bubbels and eventually cracks. This is looking really nice!!!!

Hey spectra20 I plan on doing like a 1/2" radius on the stringers so it does not trap air like you said but I am going to wait to do this until I am done doing the outside stringers as I will be meassureing off the inner stringers to cut the outside and it is easier with a square edge. Thanks for the compliment, I gotta say I am pretty jazzed :party2::champagne:

Well I had a couple of days to burn so I ran up to work on the boat, made a little more progress. Got the outside stringers cut to fit and cut all the balsa core for the floor, now I just have to finish grinding the bottom up under the deck and maybe this thing can start going back together......maybe:grumble:

Oh yeah also was able to sell the motor out of the boat and the buyer met me in Parker to pick it up.....more money to throw at this project now.

Hey thanks for the intrest in the project but sorry to say not alot of progress lately. Back in August had a shutoff valve in the master bath fail and had water running for almost 3 weeks inside the house so I have been dealing with putting that back together (closest bid out of 3 was still $5400.00 more than the fucking insurance would payout, so I am doing the work and eating the labor). Anyhow I have been designing the rigging and making parts but the hull will be on hold until it starts cooling back off, the last thing I did was remove the deck so I could finish grinding and it will also be easier to put the stringers, glass, balsa floor back in. Here are a couple of the most recent pictures........wish I could say it was getting real close but it's jusn not in the cards for me right now.
