Not to put the thread back on track...:rolleyes:but the road is supposed to be closed until at least 7-7:30. We talked one of the security guys on the dam to let us through to BML.
At the stop sign in Earp, there were about 7-8 rigs; people just trying to get to whatever CG they were heading to.

Sure is perty out here right now!

Just looked across the river, they are still doing recovery work, and the road is closed. Lots of Hazmat stuff. They have patrol boats sitting up and down river from Riverland with their lights on keeping the river closed in that stretch. As soon as I see traffic moving on the Calif. side I will let you know.

It litterally just came to fruition. we were going to the river but sean and I imposed our will and convinced Linds that for the same $$$ we were gonna spend on gas/food we could have a killer vegas weekend. Not to mention I think were over big holiday weekends.

I do wonder how a haz materials driver overturns in the first place? These types of drivers are about as skilled as they get I would think. Parker Dam Road can sneak up on you and there are many turns where he could have gone into the River. Glad it was just an inconvenience and not a major catastrophe.

I was wondering what the hell a truck like this was heading up the road in the first place but Boat Cop said Water District delivery so at least the guy didn't think he was going over the dam to make a shorter trip.

Lets hope all this wasn't to avoid a Burro. I have been stopped 3x past couple years honking at a pack just standing in the road. Their numbers seem to be higher these days.

You can blame this one on the Quagga Mussels. MWD is using the solution to kill the Quaggas in the piping and pumps.

be glad it was sodium hypochlorite and not chlorine (gas) then you might of had a real problem on your hands.

You know Alan over spring break when we were out there I thought the water looked extra clear. :D

Great....Parker Strip looking like a swimming pool at the Y.

Sodium hypochlorite = Bleach although in that truck far more concentrated then 6% store stuff but none the less Boatnam2 a million times better than Chlorine Gas.

And Cole Trickle the dirt around your coach is free of everything thing on the microbial level from mold spores to Hepatitis. So you have that going for you which is nice (Caddyshack) plus the fresh smell and that clean feeling:D

We have really noticed the clear water also. On our floats from the dam, we can see the bottom a lot now. Don't remember that in the past?

We as kids practically grew up at Echo and swimming just off shore we used to joke about how you could never see you feet down there.

I agree with you one can almost see down 10 feet easy pretty much everywhere except about the last two miles before Bluewater.

I'd guess burro or bad driver ran him off the road. I'd be real surprised if it was burros though. In my 5 millions trips down that road, I've found that they are most prevelant between the hours of 12-5am and usually from around Lizards to River Lodge exclusively. I'm going to say I've never seen one farther north or south than those locations.

I noticed the same thing last trip, and was telling my buddy that the water was so clear.I guess its still to cold for everyone to be pissing in the water in havascrew.

In front of the Rio heading home one Tuesday afternoon around 4:00pm was when we had to stop and wait. My wife was telling me to just tap one with the motor home to get it moving. :D There were four and we had a little back up going waiting for them to shit up the road. LOL.

As little kids back in the lats 60's early 70's seeing even one was very rare. Now it's almost every time we go and stay into mid week. My kids love it but they are a dangerous obstacle on the road.

About two years ago we were staying at River Lodge and walking the dog at around 5:00 am...just as you said many of them poking around right in the camp ground.

You know I have never seen one on the AZ side.:hmm

We stay at Big Bend. Early Sunday AM, like maybe 4 am, I went outside to use the facilities off the porch :D and eight of them went walking by down the main road through the park. Scared the crap out of me.

Do they use the solution in the pipes and then recover the water? Or do they just dump the chlorine in to kill the Quaggas, and send the water down stream?

Reason I'm asking, is I'm wondering how this effects the fish etc? Like the endangered "chub" ?

Lets boats on the water = less "silt" being stirred up.

I don't know if I agree with the theory, but there certainly was less boats on the water. It was a ghost town on Saturday. We were at the sandbar from 10-6. When we pulled out, me and Fat Tim were the last men standing. But he didn't show up until 3. The Kokopelli's made an appearance, the CASeans were there, that was about it besides the locals.

Once the water warms up, there will be algi, and the weeds get taller, the water won't be as clear.

I never thought the boats made much of a difference either. Then a few years back I stayed for a week.. As soon as the weekend ended, I noticed the water getting clearer, and by mid week it was like it is in winter time. It was in october. I also noticed, that the boat got the scum line from the weekend.. but after that, the entire week it was minimal.

I thought it might have something to do with the lake "turning over". I don't know enough about it though. I do know I have been on the river for years, including winter, and I don't remember seeing it this clear. Could be all of the factors you guys have listed, but several people have mentioned not seeing it this clear before.

MWD doesn't use the hypochlorite in water that will be going back into the River. It's used to kill Quaggas in the pipes, pumps and canals, and the microscopic larvae in the water they pump west from the River.

By the time it gets to any water users, the hypochlorite is so diluted, the water still needs to be treated (chlorinated) before going to the consumer.

So while the chemical has nothing to do with the Strip being clearer, the Quaggas live off the algae and other things in the water. Clearer water is one of the hazards of Quagga invasion. While you may wonder why clear water is a "hazard", it's because they out-compete native mollusks and fish for the good "green" algae and cause breakouts of foul smelling algae, which can deprive the water of oxygen, and kill off all other life in the eco-system. (fish, underwater plant life, etc.) This, in turn decreases other life forms on our river, such as water fowl, heron, eagles, hawks, beaver, otter, etc.

Not to mention killing off of sport fish such as bass (small mouth, large mouth, stripers) perch, tillipia, which would cause the loss of tourism from the sport fishing industry. The resulting nasty smelling blue-green algae blooms will deter water skiing, swimming, and other forms of recreational boating.

If left unchecked, Quagga and Zebra mussels have the potential to decimate the entire tourist industry along the Lakes and Rivers they infest. It may be several years or decades down the road, but it is very possible that your grandchildren or great grandchildren won't have a "River" or "Havasu" to go to.

MWD is also using a polymer in the water which is killing the mussels in the pipe line going to California. The little mussels have a small tube that they breathe through, and the polymer plugs it up and they die. The polymer breaks down by the time the water reaches any end users of the water.

So in your opinion (realistically) what are the odds that they can get this deal under control?

They should dump about a ton of the bastards in Lake Elsinore. Although clearing up that lake just might not be a good idea.

The purely rumored way the Chlorine truck leak happened worked it's way up & down Rice rd while we were waiting for it to re-open.

The first edition of the story was the truck was making a delivery to the Bluewater.
Chlorine is used in their cooling tower and swimming pool.

The driver missed the turn over the bridge.

When he realized his mistake, he tried to turn around on Rice rd near River View,, he somehow wrecked causing the leak.

The story changed from time to time growing another leg as it worked it's way up n down the line of cars & trucks and back.

From my years of using chlorine in giant Municipal pumps & water turbines you can easily regulate the residual discharge into the river to ZERO and use an adequate supply to kill off growth on the equipment.

We eventually did away with super dangerous chlorine gas, and storage/delivery of large quantities of concentrated chlorine liquid, by mixing relatively smaller batches with granulated.

Overall less chance of large spills ect.

With what we know now, there is little chance of controlling them. Here's a few notes on what's been tried so far in other regions.

http://www.100thmeridian.org/Documents/ZM_Control_summary_Jan2008.pdf

But, when you look at the clout and resources that MWD has, you just know that they are currently conducting all kinds of experiments and tests to see how to control them.

The Colorado River is way too important to the survival of EVERYONE in Southern California and their way of life. So they will do whatever they can to protect their main water source.

In a worst case scenario, it will become too expensive and unwieldy to control the mussels in the River and they'll just let it go. You'll see MWD get out of the water pumping and canal business and into the desalination business.
