The way they test it is by dropping a 10" white disk in the water and then measure the level at which it can be seen. This year measured 77.8' deep! Yes that's feet!:yikes:yikes Lake Tahoe is the clearest it's been in decades in big part due to the lack of snow and runoff.

I'd love to make a Tahoe trip soon. Winter or summer ... doesn't matter.

... Spent a couple of weeks in Tahoe in November looking for real estate ...looked at many homes...dollar for dollar I can get a better home in Tahoe in exchange for the money that I get from my house in North Hollywood...I can also take my very minimal property taxes from North Hollywood and transfer them to Tahoe... Per a tax agreement between Los Angeles County and El Dorado County... I'm going back up in May to give it a more serious look...funny thing although I own four boats I didn't even look at the water???...

Sweet. I thought the 1031 deal was only within the same county.

YUP, that is awesome news about the clarity. UC Davis has been providing increasingly good news since over 2010 like you indicated.
Not to be a buzz-kill,
but not sure if you have heard about the movement to 'park' the official Secchi Disk (the 10' white disk) in favor of a new measurement process that is in 'official draft form' call the 'Near Shore Water Protection Plan'. The plan officially started last year, so be on the lookout for a new type of monitoring that will take hold. I believe it is based on the water quality of up to 350' from shoreline or 69' of water to track the near-shore environment/ water quality covering 38 categories from Temp, Nitrogen, sulfate, boron, ph, conductivity, clorine, oil, grease, e-coli ...etc, ya get the picture.
So, hang-on for a full analysis of what they want to present to the public coming soon.

...Wait a minute I'm going to look up what the tax laws are and what the numbers are...I wasn't going to post this as it is pretty much for seniors plus I want all of Tahoe for myself, but this is a good bunch... LOL...

Honestly, until you've boated Tahoe you really haven't experienced it. Trust me, what you see from the water will amaze you.

... Oh now I get you,..having boated on Tahoe plenty over the years,... keep in mind I will be 70 in November,...I know what it's like to boat on the lake... ... I was pretty much being facetious when I said I didn't even look at the lake...

... For anybody that's interested in bailing from Los Angeles county to Tahoe or there are several other counties that do this,...when you reach the age of 55 proposition 60 and 90 under Los Angeles county tax assessor rules allow you to make some pretty nice moves...
... For those having any interest, Google it...

Tahoe real estate prices are skyrocketing, I would make that move sooner than later.

I bet the new standards will be set up purposefully to show lesser water quality which will allow for even greater government regulation.

... Yeah I know I just wasn't sure what I was going to do when I first went up there...North Hollywood prices are rising some,...percentagewise probably not as much as Tahoe???...

... Was hoping to make a killing on my Butte County lake property to the pot growers,...only due to the new laws that ain't gonna happen... ...Would have broadened my perspective...

I think they should drink it and see what color it pisses out. :grumble:

You think about it:
If you don't stir up the water in your toilet it's clear, if you piss or shit in it it's all fucked up.

What do you think Tahoe is going to do? Doesn't take a scientist to figure that one out!

Pay me to drop my dick in the water and I'll tell you how clear it is.

Lmao...very true without heavy effluent flow/run off of water ever year theres no mixing going on and things settle out, hence the continued clearity every year. But either way the entire area is beautiful was on top of the summit today playing in the snow with the my 3 monkeys

A few years back some contractors cleared shore line run off areas of the natural filtering brush and decomposing vegetation that acted like a natural filter for some larger streams that fed the lake. For years mud and crap flowed into the lake.

Really fucked up the clarity and baby blue color for a long while until it was somewhat remedied and grew back.

In the early happy days of my parents marriage we stayed at the Cal Neva Lodge.
That place was something else. Once owned by the Chairman.
Great food, plenty of stuff and vices for kids and parents to do.
The lodge eventually fell into disrepair and neglect.

It's currently completing renovations by some big mouth Texas investor that seems to be falling behind on his ambitions.

The public areas were mostly wooden floors that looked so cool and gave the place a really interesting character with what seems like fireplaces everywhere I remember as a kid.
The casino was just a step over the state line from the cafe' dining room where we'd sometimes sit drink malts and eat burgers and could watch our parents gamble.

Drinks, cigarettes, mini and big buffets, sandwich carts, entertainment, lounge shows all free back then.

Tunnels to cottages and beach:

great thread. In regards to the 60/90. It's a great rule and does not apply to all counties but the ones that do apply give an excellent opportunity for a 55 plus homeowner to make a move and not get killed with new property tax rate.
Good luck with the move

Good info here. :thumbsup

According to the CA board of Equalization website

http://www.boe.ca.gov/proptaxes/faqs/propositions60_90.htm#12

As of November 20, 2014, the following ten counties in California have an ordinance enabling the intercounty base year value transfer:

Alameda
Los Angeles
Riverside
San Diego
