So Win11 seems to have most of the bugs worked out of it now. And mainly...

I REALLY wanted the Tabs feature they added to File Explorer! There are a ton of security upgrades too, so I figured it's time to get going.

My old workhorse had a very decent graphics card in it, but the mother board was Way outa style. It didn't have a few hardware features required for Win11, so off to Micro Center I go.

This is what I went home with...

Part 2 on the way. Stay tuned...

SxS comparison of old vs. new. There is a LOT more HP here...

In both pics you can see the mother board it's self, the CPU & Cooler and the memory sticks (red) on the old board. On the new board, the memory is hidden by the monster CPU cooler! lol

Did I need that big azz fan? No, I'm not a gamer. But...

The motherboard and CPU came as a bundle, that's why the price on the mother board was only 50.00 in the first pic (it's normally over 200.00). I just checked, and now it went up to 75.00 with the bundle! I guess I bought at a good time.

You can buy a CPU with or without an attached cooling fan, but the bundled CPU didn't have one. The one (fan/cooler) that I bought separately was the most moderately priced one they had. Overkill, but still cheaper than buying the MB and CPU separately. The cooling fan you can see on the old MB is most likely would have came stock.

The DDR5 memory I bought is said to be double the speed of DDR4 memory, and my old board had DDR3! I also only had 16GB before. I have 32GB of memory now.

The Intel i5 I picked was designed for DDR5. Just a tad faster than my old CPU/MB combo. Photoshop now load in seconds. I'm very happy with the results!

You could have saved a lot of time and money and just tried some different props.

:) Good stuff.

So?

So I now have a fully functional Windows11 computer. Is it fast? Fuck yeah. Cold boot to ready to rock in just a few seconds. I have a 3 second delay programed into the BIOS on start up, and that's the longest time it has to wait.

EVERYTHING now loads Very fast. Photoshop, fully loads in just a few seconds. Lightroom loads the same way.

Was it worth the time and expense? (I probably spend 3 days total between homework, driving to pick everything up and putting it all together) The answer is a resounding, yes!

I'm still getting fully used to Win11, but it's really not that big of a deal. I have a Win10 Pro disk. So starting with that, and then doing all the upgrades to 11 took an additional two days on top of the hardware upgrades.

The tabs feature on File Explorer is awesome. That alone was worth the price of admission, it's gonna save me a ton of time!!!

So if you're on the fence about upgrading to Win11, I highly recommend the upgrade. Works great for me, with no issues at all.

It's a nice winter time project! 😁👍

Very nice, reminds me of building gamer rigs for my son.

I'm still using A refurbished (used, it smelled like curry when I opened it up) HP i3 P.C. from Frys I bought for $95.00

I upgraded to a SSD and doubled the ram to 8mb, running win 10 64 just fine since 2016

Smelled like curry....nice! 🤣

I have a 1TB SSD and two 2TB spinning hard drives in this build. Plus a 2TB Dropbox account and a 1TB OneDrive account. One can never have enough storage! :p

Oh yeah, I unplugged one of the cooling fans because it was too noisy!

In all honesty...

It's not some HUGE difference from Win10 to Win11, but the small ones are Very handy.

If you've never done it, there is a program in the start menu called Tips. I recommend you go through it completely. You might be surprised to what all is in there! 👍

how nice is that Microcenter since they remodeled it?

I was blown away when i went in there a couple of weeks ago.

and windows?? come awn!

Windows 11 replaced by GRUB bootloader last week as part of a "windows update", so in typical Microsoft fashion I had to reinstall GRUB just to get linux working.

Truthfully I didn't actually look around much. I wanted to get down there and back, before traffic got too bad!

I pre-ordered everything online and just walked to the pick-up counter and out, but I did notice Everything had been moved around and relocated! 😱

Everything looked great. Hope I'm not in such a rush next time.

Was in and out while I watched most people still standing in the same place in line.

Love that place. 👍🏼👍🏼

I went with : a new coolermaster case, corsair water cooling kit and an m2 drive which is way cool.
MOBO ASUS ROG Strix z590-A gaming
Processor 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-11700K @ 3.60GHz 3.60 GHz

Sorta...

I fired it up and had a poke around. Played with the cooling fan speeds a bit to see how noisey things would get if I put all the fans on full blast! 🤣

I was watching the CPU temp, and nothing really changed. Probably cause I didn't have any programs running?

I thought about using the overclock feature, but then I pushed it to the back of my head.

I've Read that's a good way to shorten the life of your hardware? I'm not really interested in doing that!!!

I'm NOT a gamer. I just want to be able to have a LOT of different windows and programs running, all at once, and not have any of those programs slow down.

I HATE to wait! 😜

haha overclocking is the devil. i learned my lesson long ago....if you want more power pay for it rather than trying to manipulate software to do it lol

Windows 7 Pro for the win!
I hate change
I've had this HP desktop for a while. Never had a problem with it.
It's quiet, you can't hear it run. Best system I've ever had. It's be on 24/7 since I bought it.

My budget was getting pushed already!

Maybe next time I'll go with the NVME and an i9, but hopefully this build lasts awhile! :)
You may not see a massive difference in speed now but as windows 11 brings better SSD support than win10, they may come up with more optimizations for the PCIe drives than SATA SSDs which may eventually be phased out.

If you’re not gaming then win11s direct storage api won’t bring anything to you at the moment. But I eventually foresee some productivity programs adopt it such as Photoshop or Premier who would benefit from loading disk assets directly to the GPU to be worked on by the GPU and bypassing the CPU so it’s free for other tasks.

Enjoy the build now, no rush for those features which may take a couple or more years to start showing up mainstream. You’ve got a great foundation.

Nice cable routing. I suck at keeping it clean. My "build" is pretty old but it hasn't slowed down enough for me to upgrade. When I first built it, it had a AIO water cooler. It burned up and all I have handy was the stock heat sink and fan. It is lout as F***. I have been contemplating doing something new because of that however I don't want to put a new cooler in this old beast. I am thinking about a SFF "quiet" build sometime in the future.

I didn’t overclock anything. Really hard on stuff

Playing Warzone I max out my FPS about 120 on 4K ultra settings.

Playing overwatch the game limits me to 165 @ 4K. Still a lot left on my gpu

Having as much ram as I do program open fast and cpu is still lightning fast.

My bottle neck is my cpu (ryzen 7 3700) and my b550 mobo

I want to go to ryzen 9. 5950 and a 750

Or go big lol
