Between the desert heat and losing a close friend unexpectedly from a heart attack, last week i loaded up some basic camping gear, locked the shop, and headed north, no route, no real plan other than getting to the top of the Washington Peninsula and working my way down the Oregon coast.

I’m kinda in the same boat. Just waiting for parts to come in to align the motorhome. Not sure where I’m going and don’t care. My best friend is gone, so me and the dog are just going. Time to get my head screwed back on for whatever that is. Safe travels.

Hell ya @Racey I've done exactly what your doing. One time I took my beach cruiser down to San Diego and decided to see how far I could pedal North in 4 days stopping at bars along the way meeting strangers and finding hotels last minute.

RIP to your friend!

Sorry for the loss of your friend. I think that is the best medicine to hit the road for a while. You can really unwind in the peace and quiet and get your thoughts together. Safe travels my friend.

RIP to your friend. I love the part of the world you are heading to, amazing coastal views. I did a bug out for the same reason in my rag boat about 20 years ago. Good for the soul.

Sorry for the loss of your friend. Sometimes life hands us rough seas, and they suck. Sometimes, it's nice to go "Lt. Dan", and face down what comes at you. When the storm clears, which they always do, you're stronger for it.

Sorry for your loss man, mental health is important and glad you got away. Enjoy your time.

I’ve always wanted to take an extended vacation with no return time and just drive the US.

Racey sorry for the void you are feeling combined with the loss of your close friend, it sucks! It is good you were able to step away from “normal” life, even if it was for just a bit. We all know it’s not going to fix anything or bring your friend back but it absolutely gives you a tool to start to reset to what life will be going forward. And hopefully gives you some strength to help your friends family when you return, I’m sure your buddy was ridding shotgun during your trip, RIP to your friend.

… that is really too bad about your friend. I am very sorry… As far as getting in your truck and just heading out… I sort of did that for decades… The only difference would be is …I usually had a General destination in mind… Maybe a specific destination …And I always had a piece of dirt to land back on … At first I used my 23 foot motorhome… Then a Ford diesel pick up with a camper shell… took that one from California to Georgia …8 inch foam pad to lay on …couple of sleeping bags pillows… stuff to snack on…Never stayed in an RV park… but Always found some unique place to park … Oh only got questioned. once cop wondered why it was parked in a pasture with a cow licking my window. My response was … sitting down the road at a truckstop, listening to diesel generators run all night was not my cup of tea…but finding mom and Pop cafés in the morning that was my cup of tea…
Then I saw got my Dodge12 valve diesel and an 11 foot fully self-contained lance camper…

… If it were me, I would Google beautiful places to see coming down the coast… And there are plenty… You probably already know but seeing unbelievable spectacular sites does wonders for the psyche …you may not be Ready to come out of the state of being bummed out about your friend… But you will know when you are… And hopefully you’re in one headed for a really beautiful place

Condolences to you on the loss of your friend. Hope your trip can help relieve some of the stress. FWIW Havasu's 10 day is mostly under 110 and should even be better in your area when you get back.

So sorry about your friend Racey. Envy you for being able to do it, especially alone like that, takes courage.

Due to work and home responsibilities, i cant just bug out, but I do have to travel to Arizona, Vegas, and NorCal for work purposes, all of which I choose to drive to....I often plan my day so that I could take a more interesting route to my destination rather then just the quickest way...I will turn my phone off and just enjoy some music and whatever scenery comes my way....I will set my GPS to "avoid highways" and see where it takes me...

First off, sorry about your friend! That's a tough deal, I'm sure he would have enjoyed the road trip! Did the same thing in Baja, last two years for 30 days, no reservations, just go. Best feeling ever!!!
