I've never been good at saying no to myself when i want something whether i need it or not, ( some of you may have noticed that) and i'm not the type to buy crap just because its cheaper ( you may have noticed that also)
Well at Harbor freight the other day getting the Badlands jack i noticed the 12 ton press, damn those and cheap and there have been times that having one would have come in handy.
but need to do some research first, and so it starts
For a little more money 20 ton is better value, more stable. etc etc
oh look Sunex 20 ton is made in USA and color matches my shop ( big bonus) :) and its welded not bolted together
well may as well upgrade to air over hydraulic for a much better setup
Add a set of wheels and its mobile which in my small area is a big deal.
Now look at that Swag offroad makes a kit that i can have a press brake and bend metal, now that would be handy,
I have been finding that as my tool collection has grown ( i have a bigger variety of tools now than then i had at the office that were stolen) i am making things way better than i use to and fixing things that i would have paid someone to do previously. even things like the tap and die set which i have never had a need for now i use quite a bit,
With some moving stuff around in the barn i figured out a place to fit the press, so looking good,
So time to order things, first have to check facebook marketplace to see if i can save some $$ on used, nothing comes up
Well the new Sunex presses aren't made in USA anymore it appears, that sucks
also didn't think about air pressure needed to run it, don't think my little M18 air compressor is going to cut it, and i gave away my big air compressor last year ( dammit)
The Swag press brake is more $$ than the harbor freight press would be,
so i went from under $200 nice to have thing to around $2000+ for something that i might use .
Screw it i'm going back to 3D printing something :)

Sounds like a perfect set up. I gotta find a brake to modify the microwave surround. What are your shop rates per hour? Tools only OR tools and labor. 😁

Why don’t you move to Havasu so I can borrow stuff from you when I need to borrow it? 😁

The research is what gets me. Man I'll waste a Ton of time, doing homework on stupid stuff!

Like 3 days for a 20 dollar computer fan...

WTF!?!?!? 🤣
And one rabbit hole turns into another rabbit hole, now you are weeks in and $100s over budget. lol

Well, about 20 years ago the wife's Mercedes needed new rear suspension bushings. Was quoted about $2k to have the job done. Went to HF and bought the 20 ton press for about $120 back then and purchased the bushings for another $200 and did it all at home on a Saturday afternoon. If I was depending on it for earning a living, the I would purchase the Sunex. For the weekend warrior, the HF will cut it.

Yep. And then another 3 days second guessing myself... I've got to learn to quit shopping after I buy something, otherwise I'll spend as much in gas returning the $20 fan then driving across town for the $17 fan...

Yep that makes total sense, no reason to spend $1k on the Sunex when the $200 HF will work just fine

$50 is serious when your retired.
The hour drive becomes a field trip and I usually end up spending more in lunch or dinner. But all part of the adventure. I've met a few cool people.
Looking for a place to be poor.🤣

I do the same, but after all the research and time spent shopping, I decide I can't really bring myself to part with the money and don't do it. Unless I convince myself it's worth it. But that happens way less often.

I evaluated a BJ Machine for three years back in the mid 90's. I was so happy with it I filed the paperwork with the state for the warranty.

As soon as the warranty expired the thing became intermittent and a speaker turned on. Seems the speaker works great.

You should get the HF press, a welder, a sandblaster and paint sprayer. Then you would have the red welded press you want and you make a video about it. You’re investing in your future as a famous YouTuber.

What kind of packout welder setup can you come up with?

This. I'll spend weeks planning a purchase, justifying it to myself, looking at projects I could do with a new tool or such, combing the Internet for information and reviews, comparison shopping and then deciding; yep, don't need all of that for much of anything after all and NFW am.i going to spend money on it.

All the time. As much as one would try and avoid Harbor Freight stuff a press is pretty basic and would be tough for a manufacturer to screw up. Even the Chinese.

Lol I do this all the time…. Over the last 2 weeks it’s been a med kit for the GX. I eventually just started buying pieces last night because nobody had EXACTLY what I wanted. Ever hear of a K9 tourniquet? Yah, they exist and now I have two of them. I’m at $300 without a bag so far….

Do this all the time... was tired of driving my big truck to work...figured just get a lil mini cooper or something easier to park or when I go to lunches/dinners parking in parking garages...just something like 20K...for the 2 DAYS I drive to work... well maybe a hybrid so its more efficient for the 2 Days I drive to work... Oh maybe a plug in so I can use the diamond lane for the 2 days I drive to work.......20K shit box goes to 80K lux plug in after a quick rabbit hole of great ideas...

Early Can Am X3 wheel bearings puked real quick.
To have an affordable press handy to press out the bad bearings and press in the good bearings was worth the price alone.
Read that: Handy.

I've resolved myself that I'm a fallible fool and make mistakes and dumb choices but consoled that I try my best to get it right.
