As I stated in my other thread yesterday, we are going to be doing a full rebuild of our Merc Racing 525.

I am looking for engine builder recommendations between Phoenix and So Cal. I know the regulars like Teague, GT, Paul Pfaff, etc. Looking for someone that I may not have heard of that is reputable.

My buddy works at Jim Grubbs, so will be reaching out to him today.

Who else should I know?!

I know he is on your list but I had 3 motors built by TCM, pretty solid work. What you will find is there are plenty of engine builders all the way down to garage guys like Barry obnoxious1, but many wont mess with the merc stuff, you can have them do the long block but your back at shop to get it put back in which they don't like to do if someone else built it.

I have no personal experience with him but I've heard real good things about Larry Peto. Built these engines for my friends Eliminator he sold a while back.

Advanced Racing Engines. Heath Hiebert.
If I was trying to choose an engine builder I'd never dealt with before....I'd go find a guy who beats 2 of his engines like rented mules in 2 GN boats for 300 miles at a time at the Parker Enduro...not quite sure you can go wrong with Heath. That's a world class stress test.

He did all of my machine work on my 540, and I ordered bearings thru him, and he dyno'd after a friend did the assembly. Fantastic quality, still going strong at 300 hours.
Yup, good work but for the op he will assemble as well

Barry is a wealth of knowledge and he did a write up on a recent build, so you can see just how detailed he is. I've also used JGM in Valencia and was very happy.

you'd be Lucky if Barry will do your work. He stays pretty busy and is honest to a fault. He's one of my best friends so i'm biased of course but my blower motor is still going strong in the stoker since 2009 ( i dont drive it that much but still...)

@obnoxious001 does great work. Nobody is more detail oriented.

Thanks, of course I have done GN and other race engines as well, including Dirk Olsen's turbo Nordic that was running 110 mph for 4 hours in last year's Parker Enduro until his transmission failed. I did my first turbo marine engine over 40 years ago, after my time working at Gale Banks, while I was at the newly founded Rex Marine.

My first turbo engine rebuild stayed together for at least 31 years that I know of, so you might be good for some more good seasons of use from it!

Bostick Racing Engines (nikki the insurance agent I use's husband). If and when I do a jet boat down the road he's going to be my call.

Jason Pettis in Hesperia
Jason did all my machine work and assembled my heads for my recent 548. I did the assembly and install at home.

If you’re getting a Mercury Racing engine rebuilt and you’re interested in it holding value you need to use an engine shop that is also a Mercury racing certified service center/dealer. That should narrow the list down. There are a lot of engine shops that do really know what they are doing, but you want one that has a lot of experience with particular Mercury packages that can give you a complete engine back in the boat better than factory new.

I imagine the same goes for an Ilmor 625.

All the guys I know go to East Valley Performance Machine shop, its located in Apache Junction (Phoenix area). They aren't cheap, but neither is Gordy (Pfaff)...he did a couple engines for my now deceased BIL, R.I.P. Andy. 😓

Used to be you would send them to Ilmor but now they and Chrysler no longer support the platform. Best bet for viper rebuilds is exotic engine development in Nevada.

I wouldnt use a Jasper big block in even standard applications. I have seen far too many of their engines with low vacuum out of the shoot and far too many with low hour failures. As a mechanic I have had far too many issues with their engines to depend on them and quit using them years ago. The last straw was when they took my 4 bolt main block and gave me back a 2 bolt main and then gave me grief when I called them on it. I cancelled my order and made them return my original engine to be rebuilt locally. I'm pretty sure they don't have an offering for any of the blue motors anyway.

their only saving grace is their warranty, the actual product they put out is nowhere near what it used to be

Yea take your hallet with 525 MERC down to Jasper and drop it off and tell them to call you after they do lake test and have it all dialed in. Maybe stop at pep boys and pick some chrome.

Did you know John, the original owner? He and I are friends. BTW, that 28 Speedster ran 174. Larry has built all my engines up until I built my Skater. He also built all Predators engines before his relationship with Carson Brummet

This one is in my 66 Chevelle
