I have dual 50 amp plugs on my dock box. I need to get one down to a 15 amp plug, so I can plug a WiFi router into power. I can?t find a 50 amp male to 15 amp female adapter. I see 50 amp to 30, and 30 to 15. Would it be safe to use 2 adapters in combination to get the 15 amp plug?

The first question might be how are you getting the internet connection to the router on the doc?

Are you powering a boat with the 50amp power? Just plug the router in to the boats AC somewhere. I'm assuming that this is for a big boat.

Using two adapters shouldn't be a problem. The adapters only change the physical size of the connection. But remember that you have a 50amp breaker so if there is a problem the router might get smoked before the breaker trips.

Two RV adapters would be fine.

As in many cases on RDP when electrical questions are asked, more info please. Due to the light load (Router / 15 amp recept.) the 2 adapters isn't a big deal, it's how to provide GFI protection, since it's unlikely the 50 amp is, and how to keep these connections weatherproof.
I'm also assuming the 50 amp is 125 volt, so having two would allow two cords to obtain 230V should be boat require it.

Is the router going inside your dock box ?

You can get a 15A to 30A with a built in GFI, but keep these connections out of the weather might be more challenging.

Dock box is wired for internet. Instead of running coax wire all the way down the dock and into boat, I figured I could just plug the modem/router into a plug in the box, and keep all equipment in there. WiFi signal should be strong enough into the boat. Much cleaner looking and easier than having to disconnect the cable every time we go out.

This box is $55. A breaker for it costs $20. Add a GFI receptacle in a weather tight box. You can get this installed on your dock for $125-$150.

It's safe and meets code.

I'm getting to the point where I don't even want to give advice on this sort of stuff. Several people want to argue it's unnecessary, a few more have another idea, and a couple more just want to ridicule anything they didn't think of first.

Don't let 'em get to you. I for one enjoy your posts and often wonder how in the hell you got so smart in such a short period of time.

Keep on posting and joke the haters if they can't take a fuck. :thumbsup

Thanks for the compliment.

I dunno about that short period of time thing, though. Much to my chagrin I turned 60 this year.

What the fuck happened? :grumble:

Why do you think you need to reduce a 50 amp plug down to a 15 amp in order to plugin your router? The circuit is rated to handle "up to" 50 amps, you can still plug a device that only uses 15 amp into it without any problems. The # of amps a circuit is rated for is not how much it's putting out, but what that circuit is capable of handeling.

Don't waste your money on an exterior circuit box or on an electrician to install it on a public dock that doesn't need it.
