Just fired up my LLM 09 Duramax to back out of the garage. Started fine got halfway out of the garage and it quit. Won't start or even fire. One other time, it wouldn't start in the garage. Cranked it about 3 time and did finally start and ran fine ever since. No problems since then. Any ideas?

Prime the filter.. probably air in the fuel line.
Mine LMM did this a few times back when i had that truck. Fuel filter was losing prime. I had to replace the filter with a new GM filter and that fixed it - it had some other brand on it and somehow it was causing a pressure drop when it sat

yep, check the fuel filter, housing, and the sensor in the bottom. Mine did this no start shit once and had to pump the hell out of the fuel primer and finally started. Then months later, in the gym parking lot I had a puddle of diesel under the truck, the damn sensor cracked and emptied the filter's contents. I have since plugged the bottom sensor and replaced the housing with one from Dmaxstore and no issues since. I tried to rebuild the stock housing but didn't work.

Reprimed the filter. Started briefly and died. Reprimed 3 more times and nothing, cranks only. Bought some fuel today from a place I have used many times. Drove about 40 or so miles and then parked it. Wonder if they got some bad fuel. Never had a single problem in 10 years. Guess I will check the filter itself and see if the filter has water in it.

try dieselplace.com huge source of Duramax info.

I have heard of the fuel filter housing sucking air from a faulty seal that can cause issues. it isn't uncommon to replace the filter mount and not very expensive.

Yep they get brittle/warped and stop sealing well over time.

Good plan.

This ^. The housing has a few orings that should be replaced when this happens. I did but still lost prime. The forums say this is common on our trucks.

I have had them like this. Sounds hillbilly af, but pump the primer as sombody is cranking. When it lights, keep giving it some more pumps. After a couple seconds running, it will be fine...until the next time. A primer rebuild kit is pretty cheap and easy to do, if that is the problem.

I had the same issues when it would get hot on my '06 LBZ. Did some research and it appears that appears that the Low Sulfer fuel will dry out all the seals/o-rings in the filter housing allowing the system to suck in air when running. Bought a rebuild kit from a recommended source on Dieselplace.com that had all replacement seals/o-rings that did better with the Low Sulfer fuel. Was an easy DIY project and haven't had any problems since and that was about 5-6 years ago.

I have a 2005 that was doing the same thing. Would lose prime sitting overnight then would run fine once primed and started up. Like others here have stated, I replaced the complete filter housing and that cured the problem.

Well, after letting it sit for a couple of hours, I went out and tried it. Nothing. Primed it again and it finally started. Ran it for several minutes and then shut it off. Started it up several times and it cranked just like it should. Guess I need to keep a screw driver in the truck with me now until I can change the filter and filter head. Gotta order one tonight.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

There is a rebuild kit with new o rings for the filter head, I did that and it fixed my 08 when I had it.

I had to rebuild the filter head seals on my LBZ after I installed the lift pump. You're sucking air from somewhere

My 7.3 just starts, no prime needed.
My 2003 Chebby with the Duramax never has either. You would think that over the course of 16 years and 150K miles it would have had an issue, because Ford nut huggers say so, it should have left me and the trailers I towed for almost everyone of those miles on the roadside? But it never did, fucking weird. Guess I got a Wednesday Chevy truck?

Do the rings first, those are cheap. If still having issues then I would consider replacing the entire housing. That was my route. I installed a lift pump after the oring change and noticed fuel seeping out of where an new oring was placed so new for a fact the housing had to go.

I wouldn't bother. The housing is a known issue. Change it, start the truck and hit the road.

Throw a lift pump on too it will help everything with pure clean fuel flow and positive low side pressure.

My fuel filter housing had a small crack and mine would do the same thing. Only happened when it sat for a period of time. Prime and I was good till it sat.

My '03 with just over 100K is the same way. Weird. Yep, Chevy put new injectors in it in '05 for free. It was terrible. I drove it in, they gave me a rental, and I picked it up 4 days later. 4 days without it in 16 years. Absolutely horrible.

When I service the filters I use assembly line on the prints and gasket, doesn't dry or burn off like engine oil etc. Also there's an after market kit that replaces the fuel filter unit and utilizes a cat filter..
Highly suggest it.

Nicktane Cat adapter is what you’re talking about but the Cat filter doesn’t have a water separator.

Truck is back up and running. Thanks again to Shipping Guy for the heads up on the GM deal for a new complete unit. Ordered and received yesterday. Installed today. Straight forward install. Worst part for me is taking out the fender well. I hate that part. Just a giant PITA!!! Anyway, she is back and running good now. Hopefully, that was the problem and I won't have to worry about it for a long while. Thanks again for all the suggestions.
