I’ll tell ya. KTM/ Husky are really the cream of the crop when it comes to dual sport. They have have really done what everyone had wanted a manufacturer to do. And that’s make a dirt bike for the road. The bike are fast reliable and lite ! . Can’t ask for more than that

Thinking about selling my Beta...I don't really need a Dual Sport since moving to Havasu. If I could find a lightly used Husky TX or TE 300 I would make the switch.
2015 Beta 500 RS....Odometer is not accurate but has just over 100 hrs.
Scott's stabilizer, FMF spark arrestor, Fastway pegs, BRP chain guide etc.
I dunno...$6000.00 ?

Thats a great looking rig. I have zero experience with Betas but they seem to have pretty good reviews.

I'm guessing by the fact that Mr. Taco has completely ignored any suggestion of the big Honda that it isn't under consideration... LOL...

That seems like a gonga deal though, if it isn't another project in the making.

I’m trying to get my buddy to let this go. It’s basically new and he has never ridden it in the three years that he has owned it.

It was a back up/ practice bike for a factory KTM guy that never got used.

KTM 450 MXC with electric start. He said he has a headlight for it as well.

For the last few years I've been working with a group that 530RL put me in touch with for their annual road rally called the Copperstate 1000. The 1000 is a rally that travels the back roads of Arizona over the course of 5 days and is limited to Vintage automobiles. Last year the group invited me along to shoot for their overland rally aptly named the Copperstate Overland. The Overland follows a similar schedule to the 1000 but instead of scenic byways, we travel old fire roads and the like to more remote places in Arizona's vast wilderness all while limited to vintage vehicles. Let me just say that both of these events have become favorites of mine. For my work on the rally I need a vehicle that can easily traverse the terrain, but more importantly it needs to be quick and nimble enough to leap-frog past the participants and put some time between them so I can get set up at the next photo opportunity. Last year I used one of the pre-runner RZR's that belong to Mills Motorsports. It's a capable and fun machine and fit the bill nicely...

p3223252487-6.jpg

This year I'm thinking of doing things a little differently. This October we will be headed north from Flagstaff and making our way to Powell and the north rim of the Grand Canyon. Since I've done the RZR thing I could think of no better way to get myself down the trail than by motorcycle. The rally has luggage transport to each rally stop (no we aren't roughing it, LOL) so I only need to carry a couple cameras and some snacks and water with me. My CRF 450R could do the trip but I'd rather not go through the trouble of lights and street legal since I enjoy taking it to the track on occasion and don't want to swap everything around. So, I'm thinking of buying a good used Dual Sport of some kind and either selling it after or possibly using it for longer desert rides next winter. My question to you guys is who has one for sale or knows of one? I just missed a really clean CRF450X here in Havasu and something like that would really fit the bill. Whatcha got?

This one is pretty versatile. I can outfit it for serious offroading, adventure riding or canyon carving and the switch out only takes a few minutes.

Wow I didn’t think anyone knew where Young was. My grandpa was born there and moved back once he retired. It’s an interesting town but I have some family history there so it means something. Hope you enjoyed the cheap drinks

I am not a Dual Sport Fan at all... Had XR 400, KTM 450 EXC, KTM 505 all plated, and currently own a KTM 300 XC W not plated..

Why? is the obvious question...

Tires... I have never found a set of tires that did good enough on pavement and dirt, found my self laying the bikes down more frequently that I should.. When I say laying it down... it was always laying it down in the dirt, front end washing out on aggressive turns in banks, or rear end washing out.

DOT - Dual purpose tires truly suck balls in the dirt. At least for the kind of riding I like to do.

I would replace the tires with good dirt tires, and no longer ride the street, and sell that bike looking for a bike that should do a better job... just to learn, that it wasn't the bike or the suspension. It was the tires.

Which is why I gave up on Dual Purpose... I just like dirt riding to much to sacrifice poor handling of dual sport DOT tires in the dirt.

So if any of you truly have the Holy Grail of tires that are street legal, let me know, and I may reconsider.

Funny you bring up tires.. Current Baja champs are actually running a DOT for the longevity. We are now finally seeing DOT tires that are worth a shit off-road.

Ads, Marketing are one thing.. seriously take a look at every new driver in the golf magazines... the brand new Ping/Callaway/fill in the blank driver will aways hit the ball 20 yards farther than the last year models, which is why all pro's now drive the ball 500 yards... ooooppps... they cant, but if you read that marketing BS, then they should be able to...., or fishing industry with the new latest and greatest graphite rod, or fill in the blank on any sport, mountain biking, road biking, surfing etc etc etc...

I do not believe the hype on any of it... which is why I ask questions of people that have used it....

Have you tried these tires out...

Do they wash out on high speed technical riding... can you hit a 180 degree berm turn with alot of soft dirt/dg/sand and rocks at full speed with confidence? Stick to rocks on single trail on the side of mountain without slipping?

Because from what I know about Baja, they go fast and in a straight line for the majority of the ride, and thats not what I do.

Thanks! I’m really pumped to have one. I’ve had a WR450 in the past and always enjoyed having a plated dirt bike. The WR is a great bike but I’ve always had my eye out for a X. New bike prices are insane these days so finding this thing in damn near new condition was a huge bonus.

There’s always going to be a compromise if you are trying to use one tool for many jobs. If I had it my way I’d ride on sticky Moto compounds every day, but they barely last through one good desert ride. A good desert tire usually sucks on the track because they are so hard. A DOT tire is going to be a compromise across the board. They won’t do anything great but they get the job done.
Having said that the “dual sport” bikes I’ve had have always been a dirt bike with a plate so I don’t get hassled if I need to jump on a piece of road to link the trails. And I don’t run DOT tires. I run a tire that fits the majority of my riding. Lately I’ve been running a Maxxis Desert IT setup here in Havasu. They last forever in the desert and actually work good enough for the occasionally practice day at the track.

We ride mostly in Barstow, and occasionally in Ocotillo... Barstow can destroy a brand new tire with the sharp rocks. My son barely gets 3 trips on a rear tire at Barstow.

I have used the Maxxis Deserts for many years... worked pretty good... probably the best I had found up until last year. They last a long time, sticky enough. Still had the occasional front end wash out, but not as bad as other tires.

But the Last set of tires I bought where Moto Zs.... the front tire is far better than the Maxis Desert... at least it doesnt wash out on me as frequently as the Maxis front tire... but the rear tire is not as good as the Maxis... wears out faster...

Saying that, I will replace my rear Moto Z with a Maxis Desert, when the time comes, but will most likely stay with Moto Z front... We ride mostly in Barstow, and occasionally in Ocotillo...

And I would never trust offroad only tires on the Street again... Lets just say I learned that lesson the hard way. Coming off the dirt onto pavement/asphalt, leaning the bike over, and gave it some throttle,,, that bike dissappearred out from under me... I was just floating in the air for a moment... then I learned that asphalt is alot harder on the body than dirt... uggg that hurt... only doing 15-20MPH, but it still hurt... That was a Maxis Desert IT...

Maybe I should just learn to slow down... NOPE... not gonna do that... just stick with the things I know work, until new products come out that solve todays problems...

Tommy thank you SO much for sharing the pics that you took. The trip looks and sounds awesome but that all pales in comparison to you and your abilities behind the lens. As always, your pictures are amazing!! And congratulations on the new bike! ;)

Do you just run a padded backpack or do you have to use rigid boxes?

For this event I need to be able to jump off and access my cameras pretty quickly so I will have a photo back pack with two camera bodies set up with a wide lens and a telephoto and a drone, then probably a waist pack with water on it. We run anywhere from 50 to 80 miles a day.

pack will be similar to this... This was on a free ride shoot up in Green River Utah. Not nearly as many miles, but I'm also carrying way more gear than I will be on the overland event.
