Need Suggestions: We are redoing the roof on the Loews Hotel in Santa Monica, starting next week, and I haven’t bit the bullet and bought a drone yet.

Does anyone here know, or can recommend, a company that does drone video footage for before and after footage?

Also, if anyone knows of a company that does time-lapse video for the 14-17 days this will take, that’d be cool too.

Otherwise, it’s off to internet searches I go.

If you are tech savvy, buy a little Mavic and do it yourself. Its going to be cheaper than hiring someone and you’ll have a new toy when you’re done.

If you are using a drone for a commercial purpose, you need to have special licensing with the FAA. It's something like $1,800 a year per drone. There is also licensing on top of that. So if you do find someone make sure they have all that

I second the Mavic. Bought one back in December. Only used it a few times but very easy to set up and use. You can be flying within an hour after you charge the battery. I bought it at Costco for $900.

Didn’t know this.

Do you mean “using a drone for commercial purpose”, as in “for advertising reasons” or “commercial” as in the act of business rather than pleasure?

You have to register the drone with the FAA. They do distingue personal vs commercial. However it does not get into the specifics. I am sure someone here knows. I do not sell any video or images so I do not believe that my situation is commercial. I used it for projects that I am working on as well as our home. So if I use the images when selling a property does that make it commercial?

My battery life is like 27 minutes. You can purchase more batteries on line. Charge time is about 45 minutes.

If you are doing it as part of a business, you need to do it. From your post it sounds like you are a decent sized contractor, no way in hell I would do it with out the license, the liability and fines are huge

You can do the timelapse yourself using a GoPro with external power, just change the memory card at the end of the day.

My wife work for a large commercial contractor and many of their clients ask for drone footage of their jobs inside and out so they can see the progress. They use a company that has all the licensing and insurance that specializes in doing just what you are asking. I can ask her for the info when she gets home.

My buddy does roof inspections out of Lake Forest. Not only do they do home inspections but they have their commercial FAA license and all kinds of drone/footage for commercial purposes.

If you use a drone for commercial purposes, you are technically supped to get your FAA Part 107. That involves a few days of reading and taking a test that is a few hours long.

When you finally find someone to do it, let us know how it works out and what the costs are. Not that I ever plan on doing a project that it would be required, but it would be nice to do a large project to show my potential customers
