So my buddy at work just bought an 2012 2500 crew cab LTZ Duramax Allison combo.... 63K worth of truck, so talking to him today to see if he's pulled his horse trailer yet he say's the dealer advised him to break in the motor first, don't tow till 10K..... Are you kidding me! new chevy and they tell him not to tow heavy till 10K, they said OK to tow his Boat, 3000 lbs, but not his big horse trailer 12K until after the engine is broken in.... I'm a ford guy and towed heavy out the door, so this does not sound right to Me..... All input from you chevy guys welcome.... thanks Wedge

I was told 500 miles before heavy towing with mine. I would say the salesman gave him wrong information.

This is what they told me. I didn't read the manual though.

When we get new tractors in, we don't baby them for X amount of miles. They get loaded and start pulling 30-80,000 pounds right away.

I come from the school of 'break it in like how you are going to use it.'

sent from a van at the waters edge.

Think about it. All you Duramax guys keep the secret that the Truck actually will pull a load and not just be the most Plush truck on the road. During the first 10k this guy will brag about how great the truck is. Then at 10K he will hitch up to a real load and realize he is focked. BUT he will not say anything because he has already bought into the I have a great truck lie:D

Just a though from a guy with a Dodge with a real truck motor:cool

Break it in like you are going to use it. New motor tech requires little to no break in.

LOL. A Dodge salesman will tell you to start towing right away because he knows after 10k miles those trucks are already rattling apart.

Years Ago.... My Dad's buddy had issues with his new Dodge Power Wagon, were talking mid 70's with cummins diesel, truck had loud rattle coming from under the dash engine area, no lemon law at this time... after several trips to the dealer and checking with the factory on dates of build etc... the dealer finally started tearing down the truck and looking for the cause of the rattle......... OK so truck rolled through the assembly line mid-week, cab placed over frrame on a thursday, engine already on frame, glass etc... on thursday night.... upon tear down found 1 glass beer bottle in lower fire wall area, between interior cab and engine compartment.... too funny

Just my .02

The "easy for the first 500 or so" is not for engine/trans, but rather ring & pinion. Get it hot & cold...and the question of "what are you towing?" should be in that recommendation somewhere..some stuff hauls "harder" than others...livestock for instance is shifting around and so is tougher to pull than the same static weight in a low trailer not catching any wind.

Engine & trans are good to go, drive it like you're going to drive it BUT I also believe in the first inspection oil change at 1200 - 1500 miles.

I'd also change the rear end lube...backing a boat in the water a lot ? water in through the vent ?

The "don't haul for 10K" guy is out of his mind....

Too Funny.... My dad's buddy Walt kept that truck for years after, cause it had been "rebuilt" by the local dealer guy..... meanwhile I still inheirted his old truck which I loved for years...... 1970 International Harvester, 3/4 ton, All Wheel Drive Crew Cab P/U Truck, tore out the back seat, 2 bean bag chairs and and little Pop-up RV style table and I was good to go, drop down the table, put the 2 bean bags together and it was a real party wagon, loved my high school years and taking women to the beach, Van Nuys high school, Class of '78.... I miss my Cornbinder
