The Pirates insurance thread got me curious about this.
Do you have insurance on your boat? Have you always?

Always have a stated value policy in place. Peace of mind knowing if something really goes south or I open my storage unit and its gone.

Hell yes.
It just paid 13k of my 15k in repairs from storm damage.

Also have a 7 figure umbrella policy that follows me.

Does insurance cover storm damage? With my recent discovery of rotten floors and possible stringers...I have been wondering if I could claim it under my insurance policy?

Yes. Boat coverage is 30k I think. Liability is 1 million and we carry another umbrella policy for 7 figures.

It did for me, but all my damage was exterior to the boat (gel, trim tabs, lower unit). I got pushed off a mooring by waves during a storm at the Islander and beached against the rocks. Thank goodness someone woke me up and my neighbors helped me get it off the rocks at 3am

I have it as well. But when my hatch flew off and ripped the glass near hinges I totally forgot about it. I began the repairs so too late to claim.

I have had insurance on every boat I have ever own. I have never used it but it is one of those things where if you have it you will not need it. But if you dont have it you will need it.

I have insurance, stated value, on the other 3 boats, but this little boat seems to be incredibly difficult to get covered.

Yes, agreed value policy on the boat and trailer. I have not used it, but I don't mind paying the premiums for piece of mind in the event of an issue

Arrowhead requires proof of it before they even issue the boat permit/sticker. And not just any old insurance, it needs to be a $500K liability policy, and the ALA is an additionally named party so you can’t just cancel the insurance after you get the boat on the lake.

The question should be , if your boat wasn’t financed would you have insurance ? I’ll bet the answers would be totally different than I’m reading .
Good question, mine is paid for and I wouldnt consider cancelling my policy

Also paid for here. Wouldn’t be without insurance. Not worth it to save a few hundred bucks a year.

Currently don't have insurance but looking for a new policy. I am in CA, 19' jet bote, exposed engine, OT headers with 750hp limits my options. I don't have an AZ address so using Nikki Bostick is a no go. Any recommendations are welcome.

I have liability coverage through an umbrella policy, but as far as the boat goes....no. It's a $6K boat. If it sinks I'll recover it. If I crash it....it'll be into the rocks, not another boat....in which case I earned it and insurance shouldn't cover it anyway. It's been raced too, and IMO insurance shouldn't apply to incidents in those conditions.

storm damage yes..... wear and tear/maintenance no.

You are on your own with those repairs.
A co worker bought some diesel powered dual engine sea boat. One of the engines blew within hours of ownership. He had a full survey done prior to the purchase. He submitted a claim and they paid. Another co-worker submitted a claim for a blown outdrive in his Lavey and they paid out. I am blown away at what people submit for an insurance claim, personally I would only file a claim for something catastrophic...... My enclosed trailer frame broke. Someone suggested I submit it to insurance. Its not insurance's fault that a 25 year old trailer frame wore out, shit happens and its the price we pay to play.

I always have had stated value. But just found out yesterday my company will not be renewing boat insurance?!? My agent is currently looking for a replacement, but I will be reaching out to the board providers for quotes now as well. 😔

Maybe they know I have only used it twice in the last 2 years 😆….

I hate to be the bearer of bad news… but you’re umbrella liability would not cover you in any case, unless you carry the proper underlying limits on a boat insurance policy.

Long story short, you need to have liability limits close to maxed out on a “underlying policy” in order for an umbrella to kick in or cover anything.

Yep and those limits hurt every renewal.
My limits are the highest you can have with SF and everything I own has to have the same limits. That even includes the golf carts, RZR, etc.

IMO, worth every penny.

Both my boats paid for 28 magic deck and 29 Nordic deck. Both insured. Payment or not insurance is mandatory.

Question for the insurance folks, is agreed value really agreed value? Also wondering if anybody’s ever had agreed value paid off after a total loss?

Not trying to start a controversy I just don’t trust insurance companies.😬
