My work is so buried right now. I work more than I ever have in my life. I have been planning on taking a few days off around next weekend but my work is not looking like it will not accommodate that. Everyone needs it now or immediately. I took on more work two weeks ago to help another guy out but now doing that looks like it may screw me.

So do you guys cancel plans because of work? I work to live not live to work but lately because of my companies drive it seems that what we all do.

Depends if you are an employee or owner.....I'm the owner so it never stops..... I try and take the time cause its needed to reset, at the same time its hard to relax knowing there is a lot going on and you bailed.. It's something I've struggled doing for many many yrs...

Being self employed (construction) and a son of a self employed Dad (same) I know all to well how work and schedules get in the way. It's just how it is. Sometimes jobs need to get done and if they don't get done by you, you'll eventually get replaced by someone who can.

The way I see it is we are at the tail end of one of the biggest rushes I have ever seen. The river, vacations, etc will still be there when it slows down and I’m taking advantage of every job I can currently and capatalizing. Already starting to see friends pull back on things due to lack of money. Many of them were the same ones who gave me a hard time for working so much. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

I will be just fine through the “slow down” and lol forward to it 😉

I've been working in the power generation industry for over 20 years now. I have always tried to plan my time off around the outage season in order to get time in with the family and friends. I have had to cancel trips all the time.
Around 2 years ago, I took a shop foreman position to reduce all the road jobs and 6-8 weeks runs of working 7-12's. Still stressful and very demanding but I have been able to go home almost every night and been able to make it to my son's water polo games. I take pride in my career, so I still work a lot of hours and weekends in order to meet these stupid power companies ridiculous demands but I don't work 80+ hours a week anymore.

Do you get paid hourly? Then take advantage of the extra work if what you have going on in your personal life allows. NEVER put off time with kids. You'll never get that back. You couldnt pay me enough to be away from mine.

If you're salary then bring it up to your boss... set an expectation so you dont put yourself out and get 0 reward/recognition. "Comp time" is a great incentive to put off personal plans for work when it gets tough. You dont get more in your paycheck but you'll have extra time off later on. Schedule it in asap.

I've been in that situation alot. If I have commitments that I have made and will miss, yes, I will cancel. Or if there is any unfinished business or obligation that would bug me to a point where I could not enjoy the vacation, then I would cancel.

Guys I am a dedicated employee and have been for the last 11 years with this company. Its just the un appreciation and demand have gone through the roof. Some of you have said if I dont stay then I will possibly be replaced with someone that will . Well to that I say bring it on please replace me. I am sick of putting my family and life second to work.

Then tender your resignation and leave/find a new job.

Depends...

When I worked for Longo (Penske) it was impossible. You either showed up for work or you were terminated. You better be dead if you called in sick.

When I worked at the dealerships as a tech, fuck yeah. I took time off without pay all the damm time!!! I could always make more money, but you can't make more time!!!

When I worked for myself, I sure as shit did. But I would work late and get there early to meet the client promise time. This is the beauty of working for yourself.

Now being retired? Plans? We don't need no stinking plans! Just go with the flow baby...

P.S. I'm with Bill. Get it while the gettin is good. 👍

I was in your shoes 10 years ago. Work Work Work just to make more money for someone else. Fuck that!! Took a chance and went on my own and it's been the best decision I've ever made. I always tell my kids to make sure you become your own boss so you can decide how hard you want to work. May be time to reevaluate your work situation. Don't put your family second to your job. You only live once!!

I work too much. Self employed makes it tough.

Building cars and wealthy people are impatient. It is what it is.

I've done it once, and I'll never do it again. Was supposed to be on an 8 day vacation with the wife and had to stay due to a work schedule conflict. Sometimes I need to realize that my job isn't that serious.

You are an employee?

If you requested the time off, you go period.

If you are so dam important that you can’t go, ask your employer to show you how your compensation reflects that.

I skipped the River last weekend for work. It all depends on how many jobs going and how fast they need to be done. Repeat customers kid needed to move into his new place. They keep sending us jobs so been putting in over time. They have a real big job coming up at there house. There long time architect was going to handle it all. They just mentioned they want us to bid it and are very happy with how the current job has been getting done so fast. Hard work pays off sometimes.

If I worked for someone, I would of been at the river. Unless there was a $$$ bonus to not be.

depends on event/plans, but generally i dont change my plans. my vaciton "request" is not a request, its me telling you im not gonna be around during that time.

i can tell you exactly why i think this way.. growing up i never once said gee, i wish my dad worked more.. i have very little memories with him and didnt have much of a relationship with him since he was never around, always put work first.. he died at work at age 49. he had alot of the same thoughts ive seen posted here.. make money now, always do stuff later etc.. later never came.

This is me. I am not requesting VC, I am letting you know I will not be in so make other arrangements. I give more than 2 weeks notice, many times 6+ months because that's how far in advance I am reserving stuff. I did have one company try and deny me VC so I said, take this as my 2 weeks notice and they were not happy. I left 2 weeks later.

Growing up where my dad put work first I realized it’s time you will never get back

A lot of people are saying work first then take the vacation

Well it always seems to be more work. So push again. Then it happens again. Bam 10 years later and you are looking up going WTF where did the time go.

Play hard work hard.

Not

Work hard play hard

I was self-employed for 20-years. It was okay with a strong lean towards - hated it.
Then I dumbed myself down and got a State gig. Love it.
But the deal is, I never call in sick or take vacay lol. I recently had to ask what the process is to call in sick...and I've been there 5-years.

When I was self employed work took priority over about anything. Now no, my hours are set…I may answer some calls etc…but there is really nothing in my role that I can’t do tomorrow or Monday etc. family time is priority for me now.

I was a latch key kid…I take my kid to school and pick her up everyday etc. you don’t get that time back. Work can wait.

I'm an employee and don't make plans so nothing to cancel. I've got excuses really but at the same time when I would take time off for plans or a vacation with others the time spent there was kinda a let down and I would've rather gone to work. Meaning a bait and switch of plans. If it's my deal it's easier to take off time.

Working in the entertainment industry is a 24/7 kind of deal. Can't even count how many plan, trips, vacations have been canceled.
27 years ago we were at parker and left mid week to do a demo for a game show called Wheel of Fortune. My wife was pissed. but it was the best thing i ever did. 27 years later i am still working on that show, ( actually i'm here today )

My wife and I are both workaholics. At the height of our insanity, we went 6 years without a proper vacation, never traveling or taking more than a day or two off. We finally realized we were missing out on life and changed our ways. My wife only works about 70 hrs a week now. ...lol.

No question yes! In the power industry you work when needed. I passed this along to my daughters who are both hard working professionals who have cancelled plans for work.

If I have plans that include others, I will do my best to accommodate work, but it’s not a priority, during my regular off hours.

If you’re not learning anything new, you’re wasting your time. 11 years doing the same thing is not going to get you to the next level.

I'm an admitted workoholic we worked 6.5 days a week for as long as I can recall , a few month back we started taking Mondays off , were super busy and still find myself going to the shop for freight and such on off days , a few weeks back I met a Couple on a Sunday dropping off a boat for a repower , The beauty of self employment is that despite work being a priority if We want to take off theres no one we have to ask for permission

Yeah I cancel or change plans a lot. My job is deadline driven but at the same time no one is going to die if the work doesn’t get done today. So to balance that I always tell my clients that if they need something done by a certain time to let me know but otherwise it’s gonna get done soon enough. So I’m going to Cabo Friday morning not refundable last minute trip so there ain’t no way I’m not going.

I don’t understand. You are teaching your daughters their personal life means less than their professional life like it’s a good thing?

I’m in the power industry. When I take vacation I come back to a shit show and work my ass off to get back on track.
But there is no job worth letting life pass me by.

it is what it is... unless you came from money, or if you're in some business that can scale at a rapid pace..... we all gotta work.

I've been self employed for 21 years........ I still am in the office on average 5 days a week. Pretty sure most of my union friends get more time off than I do. Most of my friends that make great money, all work harder and longer hours than anyone I know. It is what it is... money provides you the freedom... the more of it you have, the more freedom you have to not take the work, or risk getting replaced.

Some of these responses in here come from places of overly confident employees. The pendulum will swing the other direction sooner or later, and people who can be replaced will be replaced. I am all about making time for family time etc etc, but those in an "employee" position telling employers to kick rocks when asked to work... could be singing a different tune with the recession we're facing.

Curious what you do for work? To me it better be life or death to take time away from my family that I previously planned!

I guess you could have never worked for me. I can remember my daughter telling me that law school was taking her life away. I told yes but you have learn to deal with career and life. She passed and worked her a off!

I see where you are coming from.
I’m go i enjoy a set amount of vacation days a year and I plan to use them. I’m busy everyday. The work isn’t going to stop so if I cancel this vacation I’m still going to be busy when I plan the next one and so on and so on.

Regarding being replaced. If a company wants to replace a good employee because they want to spend time with their family. That company can kindly fuck right off. So if someone busts their ass 50 weeks a year and vacations 2 weeks their ass is on the chopping block? I highly doubt it.

Now if Johnny coworker sees a busy time coming up and plans his vacation during the shit show. That’s a different story.
