Like most of you I come from a time where the internet wasn’t and then it was. While a lot of the utility functions are amazing, like the mapping stuff (fuck carrying 6 thomas guides) it seems that with this much information and accessibility available to everyone that it causes more problems as well. The mapping thing is a great example, now you never get lost, however when someone finds a cool spot in the outdoors, they drop a pin, post it online, and then 1000’s of people show up and shit all over it, making it not a great spot anymore and actually someplace to avoid. That’s just an example of the pros and cons of one internet utility function. Personally I will not share good places publically online, I will intentionally mislabel the good spots and keep them up them on the down low. The AI stuff is taking this exposure thing to a next level, but it’s only as good as the information it’s fed. I guess this is my own little fuck you to the AI machine LOL Three examples are as follows, if I post up a boating photo it would be tagged lake havasu, all surf spots are Newport Beach, and all off-roading is called glamis. Those places can’t get anymore blown out than they already are, soooooo……

I survived and thrived just fine before it, gotta admit I’d be okay with turning the whole thing off and letting the cards fall where they will 😂

Thoughts?

My job is dependent on the internet, but if it goes dark, I have skills and I won't starve. We also have an addiction to books, so I'll pivot. I have a brief case full of paper maps. Map books for every one of the western states. We use those books often when we travel and prepare for travel.

I've killed off all my social accounts except RDP and LinkedIn, however my LinkedIn account is not updated and I had to modify my name to stop the unsolicited marketing attacks. Social is a cesspool.

I still find a lot of educational value in the Interwebs.

The helping side of the www is great, like your mapping example, but a shitton of the rest is either aggravating, bullshit or some pink haired non-bionary former chick that sometimes wants to act like a dickless jackass "guy" ...... then you got the man-hating chicks that advise women struggling with their husband/relationship. Or the 60 gazillion choices you have claiming to be experts at (fill in the blank) that clearly have ZERO credentials.
The trust factor of random info is edging towards nil for me. Albeit, Youtube videos for DIY repairs of various appliances, cars, etc. is certainly more on the "helping" side of the www.
The caveat? The devil lives within the www. Look before you leap.

I like the access to information but I have a huge issue with the demand of total access to me 24/7. Work, tenants, family, friends, ect. People act crazy if my phone isn't attached to my hand.

-What do you mean you didn't get my text? I sent it 10 minutes ago.
-Didn't you get my email at 1am?
- I called and you didn't answer.....

I disconnect. Leave a message and I MIGHT call you back.

Is this a RiverDave's Annual RV Trip pics callout thread?
No, that’s some real deal road tripping right there, the masses don’t have what it takes to make it there, time, money, desire. It’s a shit ton of effort to get that far out.

More so it’s the main stream social networks that are fucking things up, below are some screenshots with specific locations, some of those cool spots are now sketchy as fuck with dirt bags and graffiti. With our social media these spots would still be unexplored by the shit heads of society.

Access to information is an absolute win.

Unlimited access to people is terrible imo.

I respond to clients who are good to me quickly. Others get a response during banking hours, or when I get up at 5am.

I make it a point to not respond to work related texts or emails after 8pm. Your house better be on fire if I get 2,4 or 5 texts back to back.

Edit.

Also, the internet is the internet.

I see so many people especially on here get worked up over someone’s response. You need to know how to shake that off and move on with life. I notice those in their 50,60,70+s cannot separate real life interactions from what happens online.

I agree with not sharing all the details of a nice location. I had several that asked me about an old desert mine I went to that was wide open to peruse. My answer was always
tenor (2) (1).gif

.
Even a Progressive Insurance ad makes light of it...trendy manifesting & gratitude have become a lynchpin.🤭🤭😄

In spite of all the bullshit on the internet and social media there are some real treasures. There is a guy who is traveling all over the country thanking 95-105 year old WWII Veterans. Some were in Normandy, all were in combat somewhere. They are telling stories that they maybe never told before. He's on Tik Tok and Instagram as Www.rememberww2.org.

He has several videos like this. View attachment 1404425 View attachment 1404425

You forgot the boomers reposting, and arguing in the comments sections of, fake “news articles/posts” such as “Tim Allen signs $1 billion deal for ANTI WOKE tv show”

That’s an actual headline that I saw on FB.

This is my thoughts... although it is really cool for Riverdave and others to post pics of their trips... I always feel well now 1000's more know to go there.... particulary places like Montana, Idaho and even Alaska .... Anytime a friend posts a big highly followed thread of their travels and the beauty....I immediately think that place will suck in 10 yrs with overcrowding, touridiots, and crowds...

That’s under the assumption the average joe can put that kind of trip together.

There’s a lot of effort and work involved before you even get into the financial aspect.

This average Joe does a trip like this every summer.

Personally, I don't understand people who don't!

I just don't make threads about my adventures.

Life is short. Get out and explore, while you can.

I do enjoy the fact I can connect with family and friends that live far away now in so many different ways and was able to work from home for years. Prefer getting information (not fake) quicker than a newspaper or radio and many other things but do not like the invasion of privacy and access to personal bank accounts etc the internet brings OR how reliant we are as a country on it when things go bad and it's not available. And I'm not giving my age 🤣

No more clunky Sat Dish or bills from them. Streaming has been amazing especially on the road.
98% of it free TV content.

We post maybe one outta 10 trips usually if we think someone might be interested, or some sort of information.

Started back when our exs were jealous and for spite would make it hard for us to take the kids out of the state, so we kept it all quiet.
Ya try not to put in your custody agreement to have to get the OK from the ex to leave Cali or especially the USA.

We were at the Joint in Ransburg and some excellent looking girls were buzzing Maynard.
Crazy Ray couldn't understand why Maynard didn't take advantage of that.
If Maynard moved on it,,,, that news would hit the social media and the girl he may be interested back home would see it. Yeah that quick and that transparent and that deadly.

As an example I reminded Crazy Ray that Bartender JR was not only doing some, well several, of the female customers, but their mothers too. That scandal surfaced in social media and JR can't even show his face in town and his one in a million, ultra-fine girlfriend bailed out on him too.

For all of the good the Internet has brought, there has been far more bad.

I honestly wish we could uninvent it, at the very least remove most of the social media.

I'll be honest, RDP is about the only site I visit in a regular basis, and it has been years since I've "surfed" the Internet as entertainment.

This is the downside for me as well. No more secret little places anymore.

Apparently the world has a little less internet this morning 😂

Something I’ve become aware of through my aviation exposure is a thing called GPS spoofing. There is an old school radio navigation system called VOR that is still active but all these kiddos don’t pay much attention to it as they have access to glass cockpits and GPS navigation systems.

Some reading on the topic.
