So my daughter is taking her drivers test next Monday. She’s going to use my Camry.

Does the car have to be legal to pass the test? It has no front plate (lost when bumper ripped off when I hit an alligator when I hit a alligator on the freeway) and dark tinted windows.

Will this be an automatic fail? Time to find a different car?

They will check for safety stuff

Blinkers, brake lights, mirrors, horn. They will likely care about the windows. Roll them down and pull the fuse. Say they don’t work. Front plate could be hit or miss

Seems like a play it safe scenario. Likely going to be the call of the tester and with standard luck, you’ll catch him on a bad day.

If I remover correct back in the day they do a light check among other things prior to the test. This would be a good opportunity to call out one of the issues youve mentioned.

I had my daughters take the test in a dodge van with only rear windows, and side mirrors for az parallel parking test, little darlings weren't happy but dam can they drive. Good luck on the test. Funny story on inspections, when I brought my 65 polara gutted for rebuild, I had to have all safety crap done, so inspections , dude says you have no horn. Custom 12" steering wheel, I reached down to not standard console hit the button.😆

I guess I might be stripping tint this weekend. Not like I wanted it that dark for her anyways.

We just went thru this with my daughter and couldnt get a 100% yes or no answer so we played it safe. Luckily on my wifes car the license plate mount went down over the lower grill area so i was able to zip tie it on and not drill the holes in the bumper for it. And we have been waiting to tint the windows until after she took the test.

Yeah I will need to drill as I had the body shop keep it clean when I got the new bumper.

Rental car if you dont want the BS
Yeah but then you need to try and rent something you’re familiar with. I get to drive company cars and I don’t know where half the crap is in it, compared to my car that I could find everything blindfolded (Ford vs GM).

I had no issues with limo tint, but that was nearly 40 years ago. 😂

You’re kidding right?🤷🏼‍♂️
No, the driving test will not proceed if the car is not legal, and I’ve never seen them not inspect the car first.
They have their checklist and they don’t vary.

”A glove box that is closed”, stupid... Base Chevy express doesn’t even have one.
probably not a good idea to show up without front plate though.

Nope. Serious question. Thank you though. @FlyByWire gave a great response. You should try it sometime.
I wasn’t trying to be a smart ass.
They won’t let the test proceed in a car that won’t pass inspection.
Showing up in a car that qualifies for at least 2 safety violations (citations) seems like a bad idea?

I vote for a rental as well. How long can it take to figure out were everything is at?

You'll have plenty of time just waiting in line. 🙄

Possibly an inmate will let you borrow a set of plates for a couple hours.
Doesn't say the plates have to match the car...just that they need to be there with registration stickers on the rear plate.

That's what I was trying to determine on the document. Don't know if they cross check the VIN or not. Rental or a loaner would be best advise. Make sure she practices in another car before testing. Good Luck CC

That would be bad bad news if they Did check the registration. Definitely not worth the risk! 😱

Maybe magnetic tape, or really strong magnet on the back side of the grill or bumper? Shame to drill into a bumper that is just the way you want it.

Ballers let kids take testes in ferraris and lambos.....

Camry....Embarrassing

I got my motorcycle license renewed with my V-Rod. The guy was like...

Are you sure you even wanna try this?? Most guys do this test with dual sport!

When I passed it with only touching one come with my back tire he couldn't believe it.

We both had a good laugh! 🤣

My other comment on the DMV test is a recommendation on choosing the DMV for the test.

Wherever your daughter got practice driving around in, go to the DMV that is closest to this area.

I did not do this. I learned to drive in San Fernando valley and for some reason took my drivers test somewhere in Santa Monica. I was not familiar with the area or the streets and it was really stressful being someplace completely different, and have the test Nazi in the car along with that.

My failure was the left turn on a signal with no specific turn arrow. The guy didn’t think I waited for a large enough gap in traffic to safely make the turn. Of course my father, if he was in the car instead, would be asking me what I’m waiting for.

I believe I took my second test back in SFV and did just fine.

Hey Matt,

My son took his test at RC and his Tacoma had tinted windows. It wasn't an issue for him at all. He did have a front license plate.

If she takes it at RC make sure she stops at the STOP sign in the parking lot. I watched 2 kids fail inside the lot before making it to the street. Also if at RC the test routes are on YouTube.

Back to the alligator. Did you hit it twice or were there 2 separate gators on the freeway ?

Just one.

Car in the number two lane run over it and threw it up in the air into my car where it hit the bumper then every door panel on the way down. Nowhere to swerve as I had a car in the carpool lane next to me. Only had 3000 miles on my car when it happened.
