On our 2015 DMAX we travel so much the oil needs changing on the road. Like just recently, Az GM dealers service depts were booked 10 days out at 3 Different dealers in the County.

So as usual, I changed the oil and filter myself. Easy on the Dmax. Really simple.

Book says 10 quarts oil w/filter change but it's always 12 qts to get the level to mid-scale on the dipstik.
Do you experience that?

How tight is hand tight with the oil filter? Do you tickle the filter a bit more with the wrench?

Hand tight on oil filter. I rub some oil around the gasket for it to seal and never had a problem.

Put 10quarts in start it let it run for a few min then shut down and wait a few more min to get a accurate reading. Then add if needed and done.

Can’t answer on the DMax, but on my Cummins, I lube the gasket on the filter and spin it by hand about as hard as I can. When I change it out, I need to use the wrench to get it off. Been doing it like this as long as I can remember and haven’t had an issue.

Mine is a 2007 classic (LBZ), but I am almost always 10 qt's, dead nuts.

As far as the filter goes, I hand tight and bump it with the strap wrench a bit, prob around 1/8 turn.

I tighten filters by hand, then put the wrench on and just move the filter slightly and stop.

Fill until it is topped of on the dipstick.

FWIW - I always give the filter a small twist with the wrench and haven't ever had a problem. I've also had vehicles where the book didn't match the dipstick.....I always went by the dipstick, as long as it wasn't trying to puke oil out any of the vents.
Uptown problems.....lol.

Until it contacts and then maybe a quarter turn. Never put a wrench on it. Never had one leak or come off. Hand tight is what you can do with one hand and not as tight as you can get it.

Tight is tight, too tight is broke. A wise man once told me that. ;)

I use K&N filters on the gas engines and only tighten them as much as needed by hand. No wrench. These filters have the 1" fitting on the bottom that you can use a wrench to loosen, but I never tighten them with a wrench.

For some reason the filter on my allison transmission liked to back off a little bit and then I get a little red spot on the driveway. So I tossed a little wrench on it and gave it a little push and so far so good. I think its because their filters have a really thick gasket. Other than that every oil filter is hand tight and then I use one of these to get it off. As far as fluid levels do whatever it takes to hit the dipstick.

I do an 1/8 turn with the wrench after hand tight. I usually have some oil on my hands so i dont' feel hand tight is quite enough. Oil or grease on the rubber oring for sure.

I have little floss size arms so I put the oil filter wrench on the filter and go till its snug. 7.3 oil filter and grab it at the top with the strap type oil filter wrench. I also pre fill it with like 2 quarts. One time I crank it on and thought my arms were gonna fall off loosening it.

I put the oil filters as tight as I can get it without touching it with a wrench. Definitely put oil on the rubber gasket to help with removal later.

My pet peeve is it seems nobody wants to replace the drain plug washer and they leak. Both my car and truck leave tiny oil drips from the drain plugs ... annoying

I clean any oil off my hand and the filter and tighten it without a wrench. No problems in 40 years.

I always go 3/4 to 1 turn after initial contact. I have to use a filter wrench to turn it that much. Don't want it coming loose. Have changed multiple hundreds I will bet. I have one tractor I have the changed oil in 93 times.

How often you have to fill the DEF if you are putting on that many miles a trip? I just put 5 gallons in one 2015 Duramax. Just rolled over 16k miles. Second time I have filled it. Was free fill with service first 2 years. Did not check the oil life but have everything if needs changing. Just bought the oil and filter earlier today for the 6.0 gasser even easier than the Duramax under 10 minutes to change.

10 days out for an oil change? Must be a lot of gmcs brought in on a hook. I kid, but something is not righr there. Either they don't have a lube tech for the diesels or they have the mother of all service contracts. Never changed the oil on a dmax, but if it's anything like ford or dodge it's easy. Just takes awhile to drain.

Why not do something like this and really extend your oil change interval:

The other thing you could do is put a fumoto valve on in place of your drain plug and send a sample to a lab at your normal scheduled oil change interval and see if you really need to change the oil or if you can just reset the light and keep on going
