The whole system is broken.

My stance is that an occupied space is an occupied space. If they’re breaking the law ticket them. But if 5 of 5 handicap parking spots are occupied you’re going to have to make other arrangements.

Nothing better than a handicap placard driver doing 55 in the fast lane.

Goes both ways 🤷🏼‍♂️

When I busted up my leg real bad I had a placard. Six months and four surgeries later I took the the boat out to Folsom Lake and parked in handicapped trailer parking. At about four in the afternoon for some reason the water got real smooth. I told my wife to drive as I put on my vest and got my slalom ski out. I got up first try and skied for about a mile in intense pain. (Mind you I was told that I would never walk right again and don't even think about waterskiing). On the way out of the boat launch area I took the placard off my mirror and dropped it in the garbage can.

I hang my tag and park more and more these days, but I don't park in van spaces or those next to an entrance if at all possible.

I am also not afraid to let lazy fucks that "will just be here a minute" know they are assholes. People that stay parked in the fire lane at the front entrance to the grocery store and let someone out to go inside get the same treatment.

Vans will still work in the non van spaces. They just have to back into the regular handicap spot to use the access aisle. Only time it can be trouble if it's striped 12'-5'-9' instead of 9'-8'-9'

Have you seen the woman in Paso that tries to trap cars in her wheel chair? Specially at Walmart. She drives her little electric wheelchair through the parking lot looking for someone about to back up then pulls her little flag down and hurries to get behind them and hope they hit her. She then call 911 and starts a whole show. I saw her tactics in action once. Pretty damn pathetic.

There are single spaces that share a common access area between them, or singles with access on one side only. The shared spaces are always closer to the entrance, and accommodate vans more easily. I leave those for others, but it's common to see non van vehicles parked in them.

I have a handicap placard for my son who has Cerebral Palsy, I occasionally will use it if there is nothing else available within a short walk. That being said I do keep an eye on the spots and the Chili's by my house only has 2 which are right up front then 3 or 4 to go spots next to them. I watch this one lady walk out of Chilis with her family after her meal, they put things in their cars one was in the Handicap and then proceed to pull out the stroller and take off across the parking lot. They must have walked all over that lot because they were gone for over an hour all the while taking up 1 of the 2 spots. Mind you their is a Staters, Target, Ross and numerous other stores which I'm sure she could have moved up to the top of the lot and taken one of those spots if she needed it.

That’s my 82 year old father’s car. You can give him a break, he’s got Stage 4 kidney disease and he won’t be bothering the parking police for much longer.
I am totally ok with the people who really need them. This afternoon I went to the gym and this 55 year oldish guy gets out off his new Vette parked in the handicap and walks into the gym just like everyone else. He is the guy that makes it bad for people who really need it.

a friend of mine is disabled, like you he does not use the parking unless he actually needs it. i have seen him zip tie shopping carts to door handles before. makes me laugh every time he does it.
And that's why I leave carts readily available for handicapped to zip tie them to door handles 🤣

Very sorry to hear that.
Should he be driving?
I mean, he parked in the walkway.

My dad died of cancer, so did my wife, and my brother, my mom died last week…on my birthday, so I truly sympathize.
I wish him a painless transition.

It wasn’t the handicap spot, but this team Yukon/ Malibu warrior felt the need to block most of the walkway at Barley Brothers just the other day.
I just walked around, but the old lady in her wheelchair with the old guy pushing her had a little trouble.

Yeah I question that myself but he’s been long trip driving for decades and he can still do that fine.

I think he was more frustrated by the car club meetup that was in the lot when we got there and they had taken all the spots up, including the handicap spot that he wanted. That one came open and i think he was like f it, I’ll fit.

To be fair, my brother and I were with him, and I felt like I should re-park him but the car club was making a mess of the lot. By the time we came back out they were all gone.

By the way, my father is the type that he won’t tell his own kids he’s dealing with something. I had to find out from a printout from his doctor he had tossed in the back seat. I was horrified to read it. I haven’t confronted him about it yet, I was thinking about waiting until Thanksgiving and having a private conversation with him.

I already lost my mom to alcohol which I consider to be an assisted suicide of sorts, and my brother also almost died a couple years back from complications of alcohol.

We’re all on borrowed time, but I think losing our parents (or other family members) is a real moment in life.

Yeah the car club did have it all screwed up. No doubt about that.
I do wish him and yours the best than can be hoped for.

Years ago I was dating a girl in Pasadena, she lived in a fancy apartment building with 3 floors of parking underground. One night ALL the guest spots were taken, I had to park like 2 blocks away, effin pasadena, anyway I noticed while circling the underground lot all the handicapped spots had numbers taped to the signs and NOBODY had a placard, these spots had been "assigned" to non handicapped residents. Code gate access only, no cops ever came inside... Until I called them.

I let the nice parking enforcement guy in the gate and showed him the violators, he ticketed 12 cars. He said, I did not know this parking lot was down here.

Now he knows.

I see California wants to kill parking lot size rules in an effort to "build affordable housing", morons.

Handicapped Parking - Are there some in need of it? Absolutely. Are there those who abuse it? Absolutely. PERIOD! If you’re a POS abuser, you likely already know it. Karma is a bitch.

My daughter has a placard and she has cerebral palsy so she "looks fine" because she has all her limbs but they don't always work so well. I told her she didn't need it and got an earful back from her on it. So I’m wondering what you guys expect of her to do to prove she is “handicapped enough”. I’m serious what the fuck do you want her to do? You are just going to look at her and judge her as stealing a handicap spot

That's what makes it tough. I went through being "profiled", so I have a different view. There were also times taking my Mom to chemo, she'd be fine walking in...but would need a wheelchair after.
I try not to judge, but at times it's tough. Spaces at a gym at 5am? Rarely used by those with placards, at least up here.

Here's the deal.. if you can walk without a walker or cain, period. Park next to or close(even if you have to wait for a spot) to a handicap spot, not in them. because there are some that cant, that depend on those spots. I delt with it for years with my buddy in a chair that was "self sufficient" but needed the room to get his chair out of his car and get in it. Paralyzed from the waist down. He was in the airforce in Iraq and his convoy truck flipped pinning him underneath. Greatest, nicest guy you could ever meet until he see's you get out of your car in a HC spot and walk away perfectly fine and he has to park halfway across the lot. Those spots are not for "disabilities" they are for "handicap" there is a difference!!

It used to be "actually" "handicap" spaces. Now its "tell me you hurt and give me your money I'll give you a hang tag" spaces!!

Sorry for the rant but....

My bitch is you go to Home Depot and there’s 50 handicapped spots. Drive by a dialysis center and there’s 4. Can’t the planning folks do a better job matching the use with the need?

Placard is it.
If the vehicle has the plate or placard that’s all that matters. The rest is no one else’s business.
When Val was in her crash she ended up with titanium rods in both femurs. She she had a temporary plate. Val is a tough cookie. She’s magazine cover material, but also quite vicious!
I saw a guy say something smart ass to her one night at a restaurant in Redding when she pulled into the handicap spot and got out seemingly unhurt. I’ll spare the details but I thought she was going to go apeshit on the guy for a second. It was something like “hey asshole you wanna see the scars and X-rays?? Fuck off!!”
She just refused to let it show but she was in tremendous pain at that time.

Its age discrimination. People need to pick and choose their battles wisely and mind their own business. People also need to know more information themselves other than stereotyping or a painted image of someone before judging them. There will always be the types. Going back earlier to what I said about not all disabilities are visible.
If she feels like explaining herself she can but she's not obligated to. If someone's just isn't happy about it she can be thankful she didn't wake up in that piece of shit person's body when she woke up that morning.

DMV Investigations does periodic disabled parking enforcement. A friend is a retired DMV investigator. On one of those days they cited an off duty Folsom Police officer using a placard he took from someone else who he caught using it illegally. Cited another woman who raised a huge stink and hired a lawyer. The judge wasn’t having it and levied fines and penalties totaling over $2000.00.

Our community services officers would hang out at Costco in my area, where most of the violations occurred. The majority would have grandma's placard, but grandma was at home in bed. We would see an able bodied person walk up, ask to see their placard, and run the number which shows who the placard is assigned to. If they were not present, they were issued a ticket and we would seize the placard as evidence. That worked great and she would hand out 50 tickets a day.
