My wife and I have a little burger joint that we enjoy soliciting. It’s a little dairy dine style place out in the middle of nowhere called “Mr. Ed’s” in Urbana, Missouri about 40 minutes west of LOTO. It’s actually real close to Pomme De Terre Lake.
There are always young teenage girls working, In 10 years of going there I have never had bad service or has the place ever been dirty.
These young ladies and the occasional young men are always upbeat and smiling.
I treat myself to soft serve ice cream when we go.

A few weeks ago I was in there and I went up to the window and asked the young lady working how many people were working that night, she said four so I left her 4 $20 bills, one for each of them. The girls told me thanks and one of them was clearly surprised by the gesture.

Last week a guy that owed me $1000 paid me with 10 $20’s and 16 $50’s.
I hate anything but $100 bills and these $50’s were dirty.

Tonight we went in there and when I paid for my ice cream and my wife’s Sunday I paid with a $20 bill and told the girl to keep the $14 in change. She turned to the other three and said “hey we just got $14 more in tips. One of them replied “great”. I said to the counter girl, ”you know what here” and I laid out 4 $50 bills and said you each take one. She said “are you sure” and I said ”yup” took my ice cream and walked out.

I made it about fifty feet towards the Jeep and the back door of the building opens and another girl comes out and says “Sir!” I said “yes“ and she came running up to me. She said “can I give you a hug” while she was crying. Of course I said ‘sure” so she hugs me and says ”Thank you so much, you made my day, just about 20 minutes ago some guy cussed me out” I said to her “I’m sorry, I have been coming here steady for 10 years and everyone that works here has been great. Please enjoy the rest of your evening young lady and again I’m sorry you got cussed out” , She sobbed and said “thanks gain” to which I said “your welcome”.

The dignity that some inconsiderate jerk took from her was restored.
Felt really good and the hour and half it took to make that money was worth every second…..

I guess I need to tip more. I got lunch to go at my regular spot. It's $9.86 after tax. I leave $2 and the change. The kid is always appreciative. There was nothing in the jar. Have to hit him with a $10 next round.

Grabbed a pizza from blaze for dinner. I asked the kid. You still not allowed to accept tips. He set a plastic cup on the counter kinda hidden. The new owner made them take away there tip jar. I am picky how I want my pizza but I definitely will leave a tip for there time making it my way.

I get Excellent service almost all my regular spots. Except the spot I go to for breakfast. I quit dining in its so bad. Even dropping $10 on a $18 breakfast I still get shitty service. The thing that sucks is the cook that opened it up worked at my old go to spot. He probably made my breakfast 4-500 times. I prefer to spend my money there to support him. I have talked to him and he just says employees just don't want to work. I don't get it. Money is motivation. But it doesn't work there. So I just get a $18 breakfast burrito to go and leave $20. Rather have the chicken fried steak.

… A counter girl at the Costco pharmacy in Burbank had been verbally beaten up by an older woman about two hours before I got there… And this 29 year old counter girl was not herself… well somehow without trying… I talked her down and she thanked me… She is always super pleasant to me… And always makes sure my meds are correct …We talk about anything and everything… Gonna take her many many more years to pay off her student loan for her college education …I wonder how I could leave her a tip…🤷🏽‍♀️

If I’m having a bad day I like to make someone else’s day better..

I have a few similar stories.

When Roy passed away I found out about it right before I picked my kids up from School. I was pretty sad about it but we went to our usual Friday lunch spot. At the end I left a pretty hefty tip.

In this particular place both the mom and the daughter work there usually the mom is our waitress. That day it was the daughter.

The mom told me a week later the daughter was having a terrible day as well and when she got the bill after we left that she actually went in the back and cried for a few minutes it made her so happy. Without getting to heavy into it it brightened her day which was my goal.

Sometimes small gestures can be big deals.
Actually most the time small gestures have big impacts.

A bunch of us were in the nice Italian restaurant in Havasu a year ago having dinner. I picked up the tab and doubled the tax like I do here in CA.
For some reason the next day I was thinking about it and realized the tax in Havasu is only 7%, so I only gave her a 14% tip. We went back and I gave her another $10 and explained my stupidity. She laughed and asked for a hug. That hug absolutely made my day. Like you guys, I like doing nice things for people.

Peoples that fuck with servers are usually miserable pieces of shit
I loved my grandfather. A bronze star WWII vet, strict man of god, and a man of patience who loved to fish and garden. But, he was always an asshole to servers when we went out to eat as a family and I could never understand why as a kid/teenager. I need to ask my mom if she knows. Fortunately that gene passed me by, but my middle brother picked it up....

Good story @Romans9 , a reminder that we can all make a small difference in peoples lives through acts of kindness and generosity.

If it’s a ma & pop place and the service is good I usually match the total for a tip, even if it’s a large party. If we go to our regular places and we get the same servers all the time we tip about 35 to 40% more on special occasions. But I have been known to stiff bad service as a whole.

People that work in the food service industry have to absorb some of the dumbest shit from hateful, asshole people sometimes. Good of you to go out of your way to make their life a little better.
💯
IMHO most folks should work food and/or retail at least once in their lives…it teaches you how to be a better human toward others

When I owned a restaurant, I used to tell my staff when they got some assholes as customers that these people probably are invisible day to day and the ONLY time anyone even acknowledges them is when they saved up enough money all year to go out to dinner and act like they are Kings for the day with someone waiting on them hands and feet. Otherwise, they are just lowlife scumbags. So they don't know how to act because they are LOW CLASS.

I DO NOT miss those days at all. So stressful!

Actually Willie, your did something for her money can't buy, you took a genuine interest in her and listened to her. Money can't buy that. That's a "tip" that can be shared unlimited times and fulfills both parties.
Your general daily demeanor of treating people with kindness and respect is a significant tip that you can afford to give everywhere you go.
Sometimes a simple " thanks for being here today" to a cashier @ convience stores etc. can have a significant positive effect on a person's day and the world around us and only takes a second and costs nothing.

I do that as well on occasion
Sime of my players work as servers and I ask to sit in their section. I've left them $50 and they sent me a text thanking me. That's all I want. Happy to help.

I used to meet Roy for breakfast every morning and sometimes in the same day we would meet back up for either lunch or dinner. One of the many life experiences he shared with me was on tipping, he always said that leaving an extra $10 or $20 dollars more on the tip was not really going to effect you but it could be a big deal to the person receiving it!!

The tips are what they do the job for cuz it sure ain't the glamor or appreciation. Haha

Miss him terribly.. I think about him at least three times a day when I’m driving by his building or at my shop etc

There is nothing in this life that compares to bringing a little bit of joy to a complete stranger. This is one of the things that separates humanity from the rest of the animal kingdom.
