A guy on the "news" is saying they could have thought ATC was talking about the plane you see in the video taking off. Makes sense. Tragic for sure.
From the video perspective is really hard to judge, but I wondered the same. Thinking his confidence was because he was looking at the wrong plane all along.

CNN reporting law enforcement saying there have been no survivors pulled out of water.
I've read that CNN, MSNBC and Fox News all reported 4 survivors pulled from the water, now they are retracting that info. That's a bunch of "Gotta be the first to report it" bullshit, if there are no survivors I hope every family of the victims sue the shit out of these News agencies for bullshit unsubstantiated reports. The reporting they are doing is not freedom of speech or press, it's lies.

From another web site

Law enforcement says American Airlines plane broke into two pieces

The regional plane broke into two pieces, law enforcement and emergency sources told NBC Washington.

The plane is in roughly 7 feet of water, and the helicopter is upside down in the water. Divers are in the water, as well

I asked if it was normal to be near the flight path and this was the response.

“At Reagan, it is. Can’t fly over the city so helos run up and down the Potomac.”

That makes sense

Happens all day long here in Vegas. Choppers, life flight mostly, go up and down Boulder hwy at 400' right under the landing path of McCarran. Planes are at roughly 2500' . They really look a lot closer, scary looking sometimes. RIP to all involved 🙏

How the F, did this occur.
Trump just asked that and the Lib media is offended.
We’re all asking that.

We were an aviation family until the mid 1970’s and I do recall we never passed an airport near the approach or departure airspace, we always crossed over the center with permission and clearance.

Speculation now as to WTF happened.

Last we heard the army craft was a training flight.

I had long post written and deleted it.

Look, none of us have much information to go on here, other than what is being spewed out by the media, and I can almost guarantee about 90% is wrong.

God speed the victims and God's grace to their families. I'm sure when the individual stories start coming out this will get all the more tragic.

Agreed, this is normal. The helicopter is usually given an altitude restriction, like 300’ or below. We did this all the time flying helicopters down the shoreline in Fort Lauderdale’s airspace.

I generally don’t watch the news anymore, but sue them for what? I get it possibly raising hopes. Now if they released names or something that would be a different thing…

Terrible tragedy. Assume hypothermia was a major concern, if there were any survivors. Watched a double deck load of first responder’s emergency RIBs remain on a boat launch ramp for a crazy amount of time, without the RIBs launching and getting underway. Perhaps there was a good reason. But, none were apparent last night.

Juan Brown (The link posted above) said this is the first loss of life commercial aviation accident in the States since 2009. That's a pretty good safety record considering the volume of flights over that period of time. The crew on the American CRJ were doing everything correctly, they were exactly where they were supposed to be on a stabilized approach to RW 1 with a dogleg to RW 13 all done visually, which is standard. The PAT 25 messed up.

10 pounds of aviation crammed into a 5 pound bag. Tower controller's traffic call "Pat 25, traffic south of the Woodrow Bridge, its a CRJ 1200 feet setting up for runway 33" couldn't have been more descriptive.

This will be interesting.

If everyone was following the chart in altitude and location this should be impossible as the fixed wing would be on the glide path in a stable approach and the listed helicopter route altitude is well below the glide path.

It was, for a different time. The Secretary of Transportation had nothing to do with any of this, the .mil fucked up, which is outside of the wheelhouse of ATC or any civilian position. Now is not the time for everyone to climb up on their damn soapboxes.

Its Trump, he lives on the soapbox so he doesnt have to climb up...lol

Yes the military fucked up. But if the previous administration didn’t lower the standards for ATC perhaps the communication to the helicopter and plane would have been sooner than seconds before disaster.

Someone has to call out the idiots that were in charge. Just think where we would be in another four years. The race to the bottom was real. Now it has been placed on hold. And for the record, I have no desire to fly anywhere in this day and age.

Trump is speaking right now and talking about Buttigigs "bullshit" lol. Not the time or the place IMO.
I agree he is blaming it on DEI. Sometimes he really needs to shut the fuck up. He is his own worse enemy sometimes.

There are a multitude of reasons and you don't know until all the facts are in.

Right now, comfort the families, and assure the rest of us that flying is safe, and will be safe going forward. 🤷🏼‍♂️ This is sad day for America and this isn’t the time to be throwing out blame.

Ha Ha.."Never let a good crisis go to waste". It hasn't even been 24 hours and there still bring up bodies in the Potomac and Trump goes to the blame game. I'm sure the families of the deceased were glad to hear this. 🤦‍♂️

I agree, but in order for you to have credibility in your dissension, you'd have to call out the D's that IMMEDIATELY politize mass shootings with their gun control narratives.

Why is it only Trump that spurs a response from you to these tactics?

Thoughts and prayers go out for All those that lost loved ones!

What a tragic accident….

Trump struct 1st before they could blame his administration !
I was surprised Trump didn’t say anything about how long it’s taking to set his cabinet nominees…

Let’s see how fast the investigation results come out.

From what I know about commercial pilots and ATCs (I have family in both) everyone at the controls last night had years of experience. I highly doubt this had to do with DEI hiring and who was the secretary of transportation. Sometimes shitty situations happen.

It’s been less than 24 hours, no one has the whole story.

Watching Trump speak I took that he’s blaming the military helicopter pilots and the altitude they were flying.

He brought up the ATC issue when you hear communications nearly seconds before the crash. Perhaps a more qualified controller would have noticed this issue sooner or maybe not. Trump is telling you the ATC is broken. And this is his 2nd time with executive orders trying to bring it back up to where it needs to be.

I have no issue with retesting all ATC to see if they are competent at their job.

It's not only Trump. He could have chosen to not act like a dipshit though, yet didn't.

This is a very tragic, and unfortunate, accident. Nothing more, nothing less.

I see a few of the other pilots on the board have chimed in already as well and I will give my .02

My small local airport that I fly in and out of is in the airspace of PDX (Portland) International Airport which is almost due south a very short distance, there is another very busy airport about the same distance to the West. Granted this area may not be as busy as DC, but there is A LOT going on at all times! I typically takeoff towards the West and immediately ask PDX for a mid field crossing which is typically granted, but that puts me in contact with the PDX ATC way more than I ever want to be in contact with any ATC but I am always AMAZED at how much is going on within that airspace. When I listen to the communication from this incident, I don't see how this was an error on the pilots of the jet or on ATC.

That all to say, we may never know what truly happen, as the people who made the decisions are unfortunately no longer with us. Did the chopper lose spatial awareness against the city lights like the pilot most likely did in Huston a few months back? Did he verify a visual on the wrong plane and thought he was clear? Who knows, we may never know for sure. Again, this is a tragic incident that was an accident. :(

My Uncle just retired at John Wayne in 24’. He was 60 or 61. He kept getting waivers approved to continue working. The main reason was that new hires could not cut it in the tower. He might have been one of the oldest ATCs retiring in 24’.

A lot of new ATC’s want to work at centers where they’re moving planes along at 35k feet. Not a lot of people can handle the stress of the tower. That being said it’s not like they just let the new guy “give it a whirl”. There’s still a ground controller, 2-3 guys running the planes and one supervisor (at John Wayne).
