I keep getting emails saying I just purchased another gig of data because I ran over. There is only one Data Queen in my house and I kept forgetting to tell her she owes me money for over running her data (daughter). So today she gets out of school early and I am picking her up. When she gets in the truck I let her have it.

She says I have the wrong daughter, she watches her data like a hawk. Then she investigates and says what number is this anyway? Don't know.

So it ends up being my iPad, turned on, plugged in, sitting under my Plasma TV for better than a month unused but sucking down data. So call AT&T and I learn this....

1. You know your usage but they cannot tell you what was used on what day
2. They cant track what is using your data (bullshit because they knew I was using my Jailbroke iphone as a hot spot)
3. They wont turn data off if they suspect something is up. They want the money.

The whole data thing is a big mystery and I am convinced the wave of the future for sucking money out of everyone. You dont know exactly what you need when you used it or what functions take. Its a free for all.

They wont credit anything, develop an attitude, and I just say F it and hang up. Long wait times because of the new iphone pre-order.

So I download a Data App and set it all up. I see data is moving along and I am in app shutdown. Freaking thing is just robbing my bank account (I'm cheap).

I shut the thing off. I hate the ipad. Basically useless to me anyway and just may shoot it up over thanks giving out in the desert.

WTF? should I just factory reset this thing? Is it some app? even though all are shut down? Should I tell Joe to Fuck off now before be brow beats the shit out of me for talking Apple? Should I buy a new Volt?

Is it set-up as a hotspot??

You can check under settings if you're not sure.

I don't get it either....my boys have iphones and are constantly peaking out on data. My wife and I have droids and never have issues. At the house the boys use wifi. It's not like they are downloading a bunch of shit when they are away from home.

I think Tom Brown has been using it as an email server. That guy couldn't set up an ftp if his life depended on it.

It could be some of the att apps that's put on them. After all its not in att interest to fix it.

If you can try a phone direct from apple without the att apps and see if it still does it.

If you're on facebook much turn the auto-play on videos off. They conveniently made the default "on" a while back. Sucked my data dry last month before I realized.

Apps will automatically update unless you turn it off from the settings menu. It doesn't matter if you are on wi-fi or cellular data. The default setting changed when they did the last iOS update.

There is just no watch dog for this deal. Your provider can say you used 100GB of data and really what are you going to do about it? Protest but in all really...you have no leg to stand on over it.

I just completely reset it to factory - AT&T / Apple with all the latest ios bullshit. Reloaded the data app and were no longer moving data.

Hot spot is off but if someone is bootlegging that how would they get through my password? Now that has a new password as well. I will pay attention to this thing over the next week or so and then start adding my apps back on. My kids don't use this thing so I don't know what app I had caused it, if that was the case.

Having Wifi on....that's a problem around here and believe me it's set up that way. I think there are maybe 15 wireless devices in my home, maybe more. The router drops some off every now and again and if that happened the device will just switch back to 4G LTE automatically. I can turn off all the cellular data though if its a real problem and make it wifi only if need be.

I am thinking about using a Verizon hot spot puck deal. It's supposed to work better, be faster, and cost less for data. I'll look into that. We have been out of contract on this device for a year or more.

Thanks for the help. :thumbup::thumbup:

I have a Verizon Hotspot at home. Always ask the kids to turn off the wifi on their phones when they come over or they'll suck my 4GB limit in a day watching you tube stuff.

Its called bloatware guys and has been around since the dawn of the smartphone... I was a stupid smartphone user until I had to start
paying my own bill ( 6 or 7 years ago)

"Can you hear now?" didnt just show up....I changed jobs, got rid of the crackberry, got me a new smartphone ( for stupid people)
I went through a couple of gigs in a few weeks and said WTF?

I started reading every forum I could , other than THIS one, about HOW and WHY my little doohickie was using all the data. As a smartphone user, you have to become re-educated.... Every cell company does it, but YOU have to change all the APP settings to get it to stop..

There are LISTS upon LISTS background processes that just suck data.. A little here , a little there. With the wifi from home and work I use UNDER 1 gig
a month now.. I am a mortgage lender and use my phone ALOT.... Its possible to be under 1 or 2 gigs if you know what to shut off.

Wi FI is the next thing that they will go after... just watch

Another thing... Stainless,

do you have the internet at home and a Verizon hotspot? I have an ASUS RT 66 programmable router at home, the best investment I ever made..

It's an eye opener for sure, the iOS change, will have to see what's going on in my plan. Wifey has a 5s, daughter a 5s, and I switched to an old 4s from a Droid, but we have Verizon. Wifey and daughter use the crap out of WiFi.

I'm starting to thing you and YB are related, lol :D

No, I just use a hotspot for Internet. Reason is I can take it with me on trips.

Try international roaming or data...they were telling me I was using 100mb/day in Cabo, all I did was check email and Facebook a few times per day.

I have an American and Canadian iPhone. If I go to the states, Canadian phone is put into airplane mode and I use the American. When back in Canada, American phone goes into airplane mode. If I forget to airplane mode one the international roaming or data is pretty pricey even not using the damn phone.

Wait...

You mean to tell me it's not all rainbows and sunshine in Apple land?

Well fuck me running...

😆

P. S. IF you had a droid, I could tell you exactly how to check and fix this. I had to do it with my phone, I use less than 200 megs a month in G4 data.

Hard to believe with all the Apple fan boys around here, nobody has a solution!

I vote we meet up with Bob and shoot it. 👍

Use my ipad 3 and ipad air as hotspots, both have Verizon LTE and last 12 hours. No purchase cost for hotspot, costs less per GB than standalone (ipad 2GB for $30, 2GB for standalone $50), works just as fast as standalone. Standalone hotspots can't compete with ipad batteries for hours.

Where did you get your information? Totally off

Turn off cellular data, turn off hotspot.

Turn cell data on when traveling, if desired.

I turn off and clear running apps about twice a day.

Theft? How so? Did I read that there was a notice sent each gig of occurrence?
