All of his stuff is top notch. I have the rudder, prop shaft and cav rod stuffing box’s and are great. He’s usually at the Bakersfield boat drags and will bring parts to the track.

Curious. Have these changed a lot over the years? Bushed to bearing, rope seal to something different.... or are they relatively the same.

He makes them and has added a bearing with I think triple seals. Call him and talk to him, names Phil.

What I’m curious about is how sensitive this type of seal is to imperfections in the shaft or the mounting (misaligned)

It seems like the rope packing would be a lot more forgiving. Are we really getting anything?

The old bushing type used the rudder shaft as sealing surface. These the shaft is stationary in the bearing race. You could dress the shaft with epoxy to clean it up to seal. BITD I could get my shaft turned and dressed then bush the stuffing box to size. (

Phil makes great products and is an awesome guy as well…just talked to him yesterday!
On the old rudder stuffing boxes…I have bored them out and made 1 inch ID Delron bushings that press in place that work real well.

I have that rudder box on my cruiser. I have had no issue with it. I have a old style glenwood rudder box in my hondo i just rebuilt. I was able to find a new bushing and the seals are easy to find. I put to two lip seals in it.

So I went with the D21 after talking with him and he also sent it to me disassembled so I can powder coat it.
It is robust !!! the add pictures do not do it justice.

D21 makes awesome products. I have his propshaft and cav seals on my boat with almost no drips. Have to do my rudder seal cause mine is leaking pretty good.

Another nod to Phil, I have his prop shaft and rudder boxes, zero issues. Called him a few years back looking for a pre made foot rest for the passengers side of my flat, didn't have anything made up, told him I have an idea would you make it for me?
Huge difference for my passengers and a cool looking part to boot, also bought his grab handle that's mounted to my v-drive.
