So, long story short... We are at Disneyland earlier this week and on Wednesday I start getting texts, then phone calls, then emails from Chase bank. Someone has my card number up in Oakland and is testing it at smaller locations. Well, Chase is all over this and deny the sales and start contacting me. I call the number on my card and get ahold of the fraud dept, they can't keep my card open since it is being used in the same state, but tell me that if I need to make a purchase to call them and they will accept that single charge. Then the lady tells me they will overnight me a new cards to either my hotel, or my house. We drive home Thursday and find new cards waiting. I also tell the fraud dept that the only places that were in possession of my card we two specific restaurants, and the guy tells me by name the two places and that they are already referencing with other scams.
All in all, I was pretty impressed with Chase. Hopefully they catch the jackasses.

I had something similar happen while I was in the air flying to Egypt. I found out when I am trying to check into my hotel and my card was shut down. That got fairly interesting trying to straighten all this out when they say make a collect call to the banks special number. Great, but some countries don't do collect calls........ It was also a 3 day wait for a card. All of this was going on just as the second revolution broke out near our hotel (that's another story). It was kind of interesting the card I received though, all grey with big block letters "Platinum Credit Card" my name and a number + expiration date. Nothing else on the card. No bank name, no phone numbers, no fine print, nothing. Talk about shaky looking, but it worked.

Good times, and glad it all worked out. I have had it happen several other times but they were all in country and went down about like yours.

My card just got jacked. I called a phone number listed on a charge that I didn't recognize

Somebody charged money onto a commissary account at a Texas penitentiary :p

I got hit twice last year. But yeah Chase is awesome. They are on it quick. And they'll Next Day a new card. Only inconvenience is not getting my Southwest points when I have to use a different cars. That and resetting up all my pay accounts with a new card.

We are diligent too. Most gas it at Sam's but still I always check for external skimmers and look at the safety seals on gas pumps.

Places where I could get hit are at restaurants as the card leaves my sight. But we are covered and I fly free. If I didn't fly free id pay cash for everything.

This is the one thing I don't understand about banking and credit cards in the US.
Most of the rest of the entire known world, including most 3rd world counties have been using chip cards with a pin for the past 10 years.

If you loose a credit card or your bank card...... it's no big deal. Even if your card has been skimmed... the thief can't use it without the pin.

I know this is changing..... but I still have a non-chipped Amex card.

These are some pictures I just got at work. The reader had a that black piece stuck on the front of the machine and you can see the circuit added to it. The kind of shiny black stuff on the big board is parts added to the main atm board. This was a small machine at a gas station in Costa mesa. They are every where.

Dang. Crazy. I always run my fingers around to try and detect crap like that false face or any other external readers.

On another note, I thought you got laid off from Citibank. You obviously landed somewhere else if I'm not mistaken. Glad you did. Or if I'm completely mistaken then I'm glad you didn't ever lose your job.

I lowered all of my alerts to .99 cents - this causes an email ever time my two cards are used. If I get an email for a charge that isn't mine I will then call and shut the card down. Get Home depot for $1400 and Walmart for $500 last year.
The banks nor the stores will do anything to even try to catch the thieves. I went to Home Depot and told the manager that if they caught the thieves I would like to press charges. They told me they don't go after them.
