Anybody ever sold something or made some transaction and received fake/counterfeit money? Did you know right away or did you find out later? Just sold an older carbon road bike (Specialized Tarmac S-Works Team Gerolsteiner) for $1000 and the guy hands me 10 $100 bills. They were so new and so clean they just felt fake to me. I checked the security features and they all seem to be there, about 6 of 7 since I didn’t have a magnifying glass, and deposited it in the ATM. He left and I left but part of me was uneasy as I wouldn’t know what the recourse was if they were fake. Police report and Insurance claim for theft/fraud I suppose.

Here’s the bike:

If the atm took them they are fine, the bill acceptor checks several parts of each bill.

I have. The atm wont take them if they're fake. I sold something for a couple thousand $ back a while ago, can't remember what, but the atm would not take one of the $100 Bill's the guy paid me with. It took all but the one.

I called the guy and it turns out that he had gotten it direct from the teller at the bank with the other stack of Bill's. Someone had deposited the bill with the teller and it was redistributed without being checked when he withdrew the money at the counter. He took the bill back and made it right with me.

A lot of people dont have that kind of cash on hand and will go get it from the bank right before a cash purchase. Chances are the bank just opened up a fresh stack of Bill's:)

This the bill reader looks at 70 point to make sure they are good. In all the time I worked on them I never saw one make a mistake. So if it took them all is good.

Sounds like you are all set. Sweet bike, I have been considering upgrading and would have been a buyer had you listed it here.

If you call the cops, they will take all the fake bills. So you'll be ass out your money and whatever you sold.

I know what I would do...

I still use a money pen if I am handling a bunch of cash, lift to the light, look for the watermark, use the pen.

Has not failed me yet. I really like hearing about the ATM scanner! I'll be sure to use that in my bag of tricks next time!

I sell a few vehicles a year for clients, nothing makes me so nervous as to get stung like that with counterfeit bills, counting 50 large can get tiring lol!

I’ve bought my last three boats with stacks of hundreds. They were all new bills from the bank, they feel weird.

Many years as a bank teller. I can feel it out.

In regards to recourse, whoever gets caught with it, loses it. As a teller, we would not give it back to you and you would get no credit for it. We would take your information though.

I have seen a lot over the years. The good ones pass the pen test and have the colored hairs. But they are bleached $5 bills reprinted as $50 dollar bills. I have handed them to people and told them they were fake and until I pointed out the hologram pic is from a $5 not the $50 they would of never known.

Yes the bank will hand them back out. My Mom had it happen and store confiscated them. Even with bank receipt from her withdrawal same day they took them.

When the wife was a teller in Bullhead city, she seen quite a few.
Almost always during bike week, and some at Christmas.
Usually from Del Taco, mc d's, maverick, etc.
For a while, one of the machines that detected counterfeit bills was passing bad ones as good.
Even a bank isn't perfect.

I had a customer give me $500 $100 Bill's on a $3000 transaction. Took it to the bank and deposited it. Got a call from the bank a couple hours later from the bank asking me if I could come back concerning my transaction. That when they told me I had try to deposit $500 in counterfeit Bill's, they are required to contact the feds at that point. I wasnt even questioned about trying to pass them as I had done my business banking there for years. But I was required to give the name and all information of the customer that paid it to me. I had tested it with a pen and I money uv light and it passed as I usually did on anything bigger than a $20. They(feds) tought me the hardest thing to duplicate and the easiest tale tale sign is rubbing your finger nail on the lapel of the pictured pres. You will feel prominent ridges. Needless to say I was going to out that $500. I called the customer and let him know, he got very defensive, he said it wasnt his fault and he didnt know. Then proceeded to talk me into splitting it with him! I told him that wasnt even an option and explained to him that the feds told me that's what these guys will try to convince you to do and if that was the case the would pursue investigation. He was at my shop door the following morning before I even got there and handed me my $500 legit Bill's. And I never seen him again.. was a crazy experience for sure.

I was told hold the bill up to the sky, or light and look for the Strip that is a skinny strip top to bottom with the 100, 0r 20 or 10 on it. This can not be duplicated
  • A real hundred dollar bill will have a red strip.
  • A real fifty dollar bill will have a yellow strip.
  • A real twenty dollar bill will have a green strip.
  • A real ten dollar bill will have a orange strip.
  • A real five dollar bill will have a blue strip under a blacklight.

These new C notes are totally different. This is the article I used to determine if I thought they were real or not.

I got a fake 100 a few years back. Passed the pen test and the ATM took it. Had no idea until Secret Service showed up the next AM. all they wanted to know was who gave it to me. I only had two customers that day that paid with 100's. One was a local that had been coming for years. The other was 1st time from 45 min away. They just laughed and said thanks.

I have a couple of the counterfeit bill markers pens around. Every couple months end up dealing with large amounts of cash. Never encountered a counterfeit bill yet.

In my limited experience with this, that’s about what happens.. lol.

How much do you need?
Consider this.
We have 350 million in population in this Country. The World has almost 8 billion. Oil trades in US Dollars as well as many other commodities.
Other countries trade fake dollars as fast as we and they can print them.
