Why do some motors have a belt driven water pump and an automotive pump (like the one with blue valve covers) and some have just a belt driven pump and a crossover (like the black motor)? What's the pros and cons?

Belt driven with crossover is a simpler, cleaner look.

The Merc deals with thermostat will control the engine water temp better.

I'm curious if anyone has run into issues with the crossover set-up. I like the looks, but I'd also like to be able to control the temp. The motor we're installing in our 26 cat will have a 10qt pan and and an external oil cooler. With all that oil and and endless supply of cold water I can imagine it will take a while to thin out the oil.

I would also imagine the crossover set-up may be more prone to overheating during long runs at higher rpms

All jets (that I've seen) have the cross over set-up, run cool on long runs, and warmer in the no wake zone.
(But they do have a really big water pump)

Thermostat on the oil cooler will get the temps up quick!!!!

Most oil coolers are to big for the engine and are over kill

Running a thermostat on the cooler can keep the milk shake and whip cream out the engine and make the engine run warmer with the crossover system

Are U pre warming the water in the exh before it heads to the engine block

We're running lightning headers so I don't think we can pre warm with the exhaust, but I like the idea of a thermostat on the oil cooler.

A thermostatically controlled oil cooler will help burn off condensation in the oil. It will have zero effect on water temp in a crossover system though. If the engine is built with piston to wall clearance and ring gaps set up for a cold block, then the only downside we have seen is condensation in the oil at certain times of the year.

The engine posted with the crossover is mine (put it on because it looked good) well i couldnt get temps right so i opted to put the the merc circ pump back on. water pressure is another concern when running a crossover. Engine runs great and keeps more steady temps now.

The blue valve cover engine is mine. I have a cross over for when I add the 99 Merc serpentine system and Procharger to it. I’d prefer to keep the engine water pump there but there isn’t a way to keep it if I go with the Pro Charger. If the sea water pumps were more reliable I’d be less worried about it but I always keep a pump housing and impeller with me in the boat for a quick back up.

When I add the pro charger I’ll add a bigger old cooler thats thermostat controlled for the reasons mentioned above.

On my Teague it has a cross over and giant oil cooler. No thermostats on either one. When I asked them if I needed them they said no, They like things nice and cold. I'd guess it all depends on what the clearances are set at and how often you change your oil.

I have no thermostat but have an oil cooler that has one as well as a crossover. I also just installed a water pressure blow off valve that was recommended for high pressure spikes. My engine normally runs just over 100 and oil temp runs around 130-140. I run in a very cold lake around 60 degrees.

So we ended up buying a complete accessory kit from a mercruiser 502 mag, with serpentine belt. Looks like we'll be running a thermostat, but I have a few more questions.

We have a thru thru Hull pick up for the water or we could run it off of the outdrive what are the pros and cons to each?

do we run all of the water through the exhaust or does smoes of it tee off and go out a different drain?

We're running a naturally aspirated 540 making about 600 horsepower. Do I need to run sea strainer?
