Need some tips from the RDP Brain Trust. Thinking about getting our first side by side after I get rid of a couple of things. I love the 4 seat RZR's, but not in the budget. Hopefully next time. See a lot of Rhino's/Teryx in the $6-$8K range. Just need tips on what to stay away from, what is a must have, etc. I've got two kids, 4 and 2, so it will be very mellow riding for awhile.

Primary usage will be winter months in Parker. Rides to the desert bar, trails near the airport/P mountain, and hopefully a trip to the falls sometime (never been there). I want it to be street legal.

Rhino vs Teryx? What else should I consider in that price range?
Full or half windshield? I assume in the winter at least half is a good idea?
Roof/cage - what to consider?
Rear buckets or bench better for little kids (4 and 2, I am aware of all the helmet laws for the kids and the debate about it) I assume a bench would work better to strap a couple car seats in the back?

Just looking for something that will get me in the desert with the Wife and kids to get them introduced to it.

Appreciate any input. Thanks

I am on my second Teryx. Durability wise the teryx is a beast. You won't break it. Power wise it is better than any stock rhino. I would definitly get a EFI teryx. Smooth starting and once again it is dependable, especially in high altitudes if you take it in the mountains. I had a bench seat in back with a full cage , the only thing I would be careful of is how the cage is designed for heads with helmets.

I would say it depends on the budget. I think a rhino is more reliable and dependable than the teryx. Fuel injected would be nice.

If you can swing it try and find a used teryx4 . Great all around people hauler.

Older rzr4 800 would be cool as well

Having kids in the back of a rhino or teryx sucks and you would be $$ ahead buying something built for 4 at the factory.

If you are looking at teryx vs rhino. I would say rhino. I would stay way from any motor upgrades. Keep it stock and it will run a long time with out problems. But what was said before look at the rzr 800 4 seater. Should be pretty close to your price range.

I would definitely prefer a RZR 4 seater as suggested since its built for 4, just hadn't seen any available in that price range. I'll keep checking. Appreciate the input so far.

Can Billdo please post here and tell us how reliable Rhinos are :rolleyes

Teryx. I have a carbed one and it's been great.

The more stock the more reliable either way.

Your money goes very far with a long-travel Rhino...should be into it for well under $7k.

Reliability when stock / minimal mods should also be comparable among most any well cared-for used SXS. It'll grow into a tiresome Ford/Dodge/Chevy debate if you dig into it.

Ya, I don't need to get into the Ford/Dodge/Chevy debate from this. I guess more curious on features and stuff that make the most sense. Definitely not looking for a lot of mods. I just want something that will get my Wife and kids in the desert... and back of course.

I picked up a 2010 teryx with lti long travel for 8500. Has been great. Way better than the rhino I owned, not as fast or cool looking as a rzr though.

the Teryx stock is going to have way more power than a Rhino and the reliability is probably very similar if not better. I agree if you can pick up a T$ for a few more bucks its probably well worth it. The T$ is the best trail machine of any SxS.
I have a Can Am Max 4 with about 25k in upgrades after the car and I still think the T4 is the best trail machine. You can probably find a used one for about 9k.
Good luck and whatever you buy I am sure you will have fun
