With all due respect, no it isn't. I don't work for a large IOU, in smaller Munis and Co-Ops time in the field is more important than the sheepskin on the wall.
I am glad you are doing well without your sheep skin. My advice to you if you have many years to work is go out and get your sheepskin. It will open more doors than you think.
I have worked for the Utility industry for 25 years, including Muni / Cop-Ops... I hire people and negotiate their pay. I agree with TCHB, its very difficult to get hired without a degree. Yes many union employees have good jobs at the company without degrees, but I don't know of any in Union / Plant / Operations Management who don't have advanced degrees i.e. Master's Degrees.
I have to get a waiver signed at the "C" level to hire anyone without a degree. I have only done it once in 25 years...
