what prop are you running? size and blade?

i have a 22' skier with a 330hp running a 4 blade 21 and am tapping the limiter...thinking about a 23p 3-blade or 4-blade...don't want to waste money and get it right the first time...

thanks

If it were me I'd take to a local prop guy, explain where you're at RPM wise, where you'd like to end up, and most importantly what you mostly use the boat for.
Point being they can easily and cheaply tweak the prop with a bit more pitch and perhaps some added cup and usually they're quite good at dialing you in.

I've always used Rich at the Propeller Company in Havasu, great results.

Good Luck :thumbsup

what about 3vs4...which one does this boat like?
the 21 4blade seems good for skiing and tubing...just long distance cruising and speed runs i would like to have more...

anyone use those shifting props anymore...i remember my pops used to run one in the mid 90's

X2

Kevin at R&R propshop in Vegas (Henderson) can dial it in no problem.

tkrrox, I didn't really address your question of prop blades and pitch etc. because mine is a nighthawk running 700hp.
Whatever I've got isn't relative to your skier.

I can say my older 95' superhawk running a 454 mag did seem to prefer the 3 blade. I always felt the 3 blade carried the bow a bit better.
With that engine I never had a problem blowing out the prop.

I tried a 3 blade with my Nighthawk, carried the bow nicely, but easily blew out coming out of the hole and on tight turns. So I'm running a 4 blade bravo 1 with a lot of pitch and cup tweaking done to it.

If you pull skiers with that boat I wouldn't recommend a shorty.

Rarely is one prop type or pitch perfect for everything, it's always a compromise of sorts.

I wish somebody try an Imco shorty on a nighthawk and let me know how it works out. :D

do you recall the pitch? on the mag motor?
isn't the nighthawk and skier same bottom just different lid?

Sorry, don't recall the pitch I ran on the superhawk with the mag, 24 comes to mind ?

A good prop guy can dial you in knowing what you're running now.

If you start with the 23P which seems reasonable, you can always re-pitch it or cup it to get it perfected.

If you haven't tried a 3 blade I'd give it a go, besides everybody needs three or four props laying around :D

I know the Shawk and Nhawk bottoms are the same, not sure about the skier.
Does yours have the delta pad bottom ?

The skier as far as I have read about the skier it has a different deadrise at the back of the boat than the super and nighthawk. I have a superhawk with a 454 mag efi but I am in Colorado so I should run a 22 but only have a 24 bravo 1. What will the three blade do differently from a 4 blade?

Theoretically it will give less stern rise or more bow rise. Should give you better top end due to less blades in the water and your holeshot may decrease slightly. This is all in theory of course ;) in reality I think you just need to get a good starting point (a rough number for pitch ) and just test as many a props as you can and record all of your data that you find. That includes weather, fuel on board, people on board as well as rpms, seconds to plane, and top end. Then take all of that back to whatever prop shop is helping/loaning you props

Revived,
I felt the 3 blade mirage carried the bow better (Higher) on my superhawk then does the 4 blade bravo 1 on my nighthawk.
With my big power nighthawk as I continue to accelerate I find the bow getting pushed down, hence it requires constant re-trimming (During acceleration) to maintain the same bow angle.
In other words "Theoretically" or not, either the bow is dropping or the stern is lifting. But there's an obvious difference ( Increase) in speed when the boat is ridding properly on the pad and not pushing.

Now it's also been suggested that the X-dimension is a tad low, hence the drive lower unit itself (Drag) above certain speeds is creating the stern lift I'm experiencing.
But the bow is sucking down on the nighthawk at speeds where it was carried fine with the superhawk running the three blade.
Although the superhawk wasn't so much accelerating through those same speeds either.
I tend to think it's both the drive drag and the prop design.
Now if SOMEBODY would just pay the big bucks and step up and install a 2" shorty Imco I could test my theory (On their dollars of course).:D

Your in Castaic, Go over to teauge and they will give you a prop and you try it, if it's not right they swap it out (Exchange program) Or talk to Mike K in back, He does the drives there, He probably built your boat and can help you with props as well. I remember Taboma's boat, Looks like one that Chuck and Mike put together back in the day when I was making stuff for mine over there.

it does have a delta pad on it...i don't know about the dead rise...the lid in the back looks taller than the sh or nh so i just assumed they used the bottom and changed the lid a little...

i will have to stop and talk to teague....i thought that the guy from socal speed and marine did the coles...was mike the builder/rigger in 94 at cole???

i would definitely like to talk to him about it and options...oh and who used the screws that were too long to install the bow seats...:D

These are going to be the same props basically.

Yes Mario was the head rigger/shop manager at Cole boats. I believe Chuck worked there also and he is renting a bay at So Cal currently. Mike I dont know if he was at Cole Boats.

Hes the man. He did my new gas tanks last year so he cut the floor and re-glassed them in. You cant tell at all. My boat is there now getting the motor rebuilt.

The screws were D&S. And Mike, Chuck, and a few other guys did the rigging,
Mario at socal worked there for a while after 94, I think he was selling snap-on then maybe it was 93. Even thou I was there almost every day It was along time ago, I cant remember yesterday.:D:D But it was good times.
