Early 00's, January, Pyramid Lake. 6-12” of snow on the ground at the launch ramp, and I went skiing in a spring suit. Was numb before the rope went tight, couldn't feel my hands as soon as we got up to speed. Skied around the island 2x, and was done. Then had to sit with wet hair, and shivering while a buddy proved he was a dumb as I... Took 3 days to get feeling back in my toes!

Good times!

Flat out coldest temp was Minnesota Crookston at about -40. But I wasn't very exposed to it.

3 weekends ago I was out riding snowmobiles. I really odd sequence of events happened that separated me from my group. I choose to wait for them to get out of a sticky situation for about 4 hours. At 6:30 PM we lost radio contact and at 7PM I decided it was time for me to head back. I had to ride out alone in the dark with about 40 miles to go. It was about -10 plus the wind chill and the speed of the machine adding onto the temp. While I was waiting I built a fire to stay warm. I know the area extremely well but had a difficult time finding a few key exit points to avoid getting into really technical terrain alone. In the pic below it shows about 50% of the area I had to navigate. There was about 10 miles in each direction not pictured, in the pic I came in from the top right corner and had to get to the very bottom left. It was cold, I did some pretty bad nerve damage to my fingers and toes. It took 2 weeks to get the feeling back in my finger tips and my right big toe is still numb. I can sleep through most pain but the toe was so painful I got no sleep. Than had to go to the hospital at 6am to have surgery on my torn bicep.

Science guy.

Haven’t done the cryotherapy, but maybe 20 years ago I hopped in a -80C Revco after a 6-mile ”sprint” and was subsequently locked in for a few. shit gets real weird at those temps essentially wet and naked.

probably wouldn’t do that again. My thing was “always try it once”. Not that one!

… don’t really recall feeling that cold but my first winter in Mammoth I had been sleeping in my camper that was mounted on. .a 55 Studebaker pick up…. When the first big snow hit. Luckily, I had a bunch of friends in town who came and dug me out., had a little tiny electric heater, in the old round top camper… I still have that little heater today…noisey but it produces heat

Yesterday, Levelland Texas.
Overnight 40 mph, WC -22. 4 degrees.
14 today, no wind.

Leatherneck/Roughneck Dave said in El Paso when he was a kid the city had to send a crew out to chisel the ducks out of the ice..

There's nothing colder than experiencing a "blue norther" on the Caprock of West Texas. The elevation in Levelland is about 3,500', and there isn't a bush or shrub within 50 miles to block the wind. It's a cold MF'er.

The posts about skiing reminded me of a day at Loveland Pass, riding a chairlift above the treeline. It was -20°, and the wind was blowing about 30 MPH.

I was hunkered down trying to cover my face with my parka collar, and the zipper was sticking to my face. After one trip up the mountain I said eff that and headed for the lodge.

lol It's been an interesting couple of days.. I saw Shawn today, I told him lets all try to meet up early next week if you are available.

The weather is messed up enough that my wife's flight was just cancelled..and it looks like she will be missing Christmas over it. This weather is nuts.
Lost this for a bit, but my dance card should open.
