So I was sick about 3 weeks ago with a stuffed up nose, cough, and achy body. Well I got over it or so I thought and its back again. Going to the doctor tomorrow but I have a feeling he's gonna give me the "try some over the counter meds" speech. What do you recommend?

Mucinex. That stuff rocks.

This is going to sound hoakie, but it works for me and my kids.

1 cup very hot water
Add about 1 teaspoon of powdered chicken broth
Add 2 tablespoons of vinegar
Add as much ground cayenne pepper as you can stand

While this is hot gargle it and sip some of if you can.

It works great for sore throats and sinus infections as well as colds.

Take the Musinex as directed and drink alot of fluids.

As a long time sinusitus sufferer I would suggest:

1st choice would be Tussionex and steroid shot...but you need your doc for that.

OTC wise - I would recommend anything with Dextromethorphan (DXM) for cough and anything with psuedoephidrine for sinus congestion. I believe that Mucinex has guifenisen as it's main ingredient. It doesn't do much for me, but I guess it helps some people.

Zicam has some tablets that have 30mg of DXM. In somewhat higher doses it can also have some pain relieving/ analgesic effects. (It is somewhat related to Ketamine)...or go with some nasty tasting syrup.

When I think about it, I'm actually sort of surprised that DXM is still OTC. Lately, they seem to be taking anything worth shit off the shelf. You might have to ask the pharmacist for the psuedoephidrine as it's behind the counter at a lot of places now. I've been stocking up in anticipation that it gets pulled entirely.

Zicam nasal swabs and Cold-ez lozenges. I swear it'll knock that stuff out of your system in two days. Ask Piper!

As long as you don`t have any other health conditions (diabetes, high blood pressure, etc) psuedoephidrine for the nasal congestion (it will be behind the counter and you will have to show a photo ID to get it....you can thank the meth addicts for that http://www.fda.gov/cder/news/methamphetamine.htm)

If the cough is productive (IE: theres phelm(sp?)) then mucinex is a good idea. If the cough is not productive then you can either live with it or use dextromethorphan to supress it.

Vitamin C won`t hurt but it probably won`t help either. The body can only absorb so much of it and most of those high dose vitamin C cold cure products have way more than you will actually absorb. Plus they no longer think that vitamin C kills the common cold, they think that back when they were able to get data saying that vitamin C was effective the vitamin C was contaminated with zinc

Zinc has shown some efficacy....but in order for it to work you have to take it about every 2 hours for the duration of the cold, and they believe it only shortens the symptoms of the cold by less than 1 day.

I had the same thing happn and Im pretty sure I kicked it this time. My regimen was. thera flu (chest congestion), then I would take airborne but instead of mixing it in plain water I would put it in the vita-water vitmanin C one. I would also occasionaly put the airborne in the thera-flu. the only other thing that gets rid of it is SLEEP. I slept about 18 hours 2 days in a row and followed that regimen. and I seems to have kicked it.

Alot of people say Mucinex is the bomb, but it did very little for me.

If you cant get something with dextromethorphan as posted earlier (I used to take vicks44) drink a whole bottle and turn on some music (what a trip ;) ) and you wake up feeling much better. not sure what it des for coughs, but it beats the hell out of drinking :drool

CHECK THIS OUT

All drugs containing PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE are being recalled.
STOP TAKING anything containing this ingredient. It has been
linked to increased hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in brain )
among women ages 18-49 in the three days after starting use

recommended that everyone ( even children ) seek alternative
medicine.

I just found out and called the 800 # on the container for Triaminic and they informed me that they are voluntarily recalling the following medicines because of a certain ingredient that is causing strokes and seizures in children :

Orange 3D Cold & Allergy Cherry (Pink)
3D Cold & Cough Berry
3D Cough Relief Yellow 3D Expectorant

They are asking you to call them at 800-548-3708 with the lot number on the box
so they can send you postage for you to send it back to them, and they will also issue you a refund. If you know of anyone else with small children,
PLEASE PASS THIS ON. THIS IS SERIOUS STUFF!

DO PASS ALONG TO ALL ON YOUR MAILING LIST so people are informed.
They can then pass it along to their families.

To confirm these findings please take time to check the following:
http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/infopage/ppa/

PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO YOUR CHILDREN IN CASE THEY GIVE
IT TO THEIR CHILDREN OR TO FRIENDS WHO HAVE CHILDREN
AND GRANDCHILDREN.

Well I woke up feeling a lot better today. Now I just have to deal with my nose draining. I think I've already gone through a box of tissues today. :(
