You rarely hear of dirtbag hockey players. I believe a big reason for this is billeting.
Every hockey player comes up through Junior Hockey (about age 17-20). So these best of the best hockey kids from around the world are playing for a junior hockey club away from home for the first time. The club “billets” the kids to live with local hockey families (normally families with young hockey club kids ages 8-15 year). The Billet kids are told that billet families are more important to the team than the players (a junior hockey team can’t operate without billeting families for these mostly minor age kids), so they have to follow the rules of their new house and get along or they get cut from the team.
We’ve billeted 5 different kids over the years, and heard a few stories about kids that got cut because they were trouble(very sad). It was an absolutely awesome experience for our family. We’ve had kids from Canada, Germany and Czech Republic live with us. These kids learn to do their own laundry, clean their own dishes. Go along and get along and generally, become a little more responsible. 2-3 of the kids became like our own kids to us. Years later we remain in contact with most of them and now my kid is playing hockey in College. He learned as much from them as they did from us.
Junior Hockey is a really great thing for hockey player development as people not just prima Donna athletes.
