I had a buddy that got life flighted from the bottom of a canyon up at Downieville, pilot was impressive. He got lucky the CHP copter was the only one available, he got a free flight to the hospital. My buddy tumbled 75-100 feet down the cliff.

The Helo guys in NorCal are a special breed, flying these mountains is a skillset unto itself. The free deal...It used to be that if you needed "rescue" CHP could do it, and since we the people buy the bird it is free...but if the on scene guys called for an air ambulance, you were gonna get it, and they are a for profit business. This may have changed, I dunno.
If you have a membership deal in your area to buy in to an air ambulance service for a couple hundred bucks a year look into it. We have carried coverage for many years, the price of a REACH, CALSTAR, etc flight ain't cheap...

The LEO guys are incredible pilots. I have seen them bring those machines into the bottom of a straight up and down river canyon on a pitch black night.
I have a few good stories of these guys coming to our aid up in the mountains that still make me SMH.
Not for sharing on a public forum tho.
And I am still thankful they were out there.

I went to a wedding for a hose dragger in San Francisco and the fire boat came by and gave quite a show but they started it by piddling off the back deck with a garden hose, that was funny.

LACOFD doesn't charge for helicopter rides because "We the people bought the helicopter" LAFD does charge for a helicopter ride because "We don't care that you the people bought the helicopter" 🤣

My only Helo flight was awesome but scary I swear it vibrated like a jet drive with a stick caught in a blade

All the helicopter crews I’ve worked with have been amazing. There was a time when they wouldn’t launch one based on my (an officers) request and they wanted a medic on scene to do that… which where I work is sometimes 90 minutes away. Out there if you get in a serious crash, a medevac is your only chance of survival.

In Los Angeles, we worked REALLY close with Sheriff’s Air 24, and holy shit are they rockstars. Always had our backs and called pursuits for us better than anyone around.

Up north, CHP are the rockstars in both pursuits and search and rescue. I’ve lost a couple really good partners who went to go work on the copters.

And then you have San Berdoo who will routinely shoot and kill from the helicopter, which is another level of badassery.

LASD birds are a blast on containments and they fly fairly low. They have done flawless jobs during pursuits and having them overhead is a blessing! I've been underneath 40 King and thought they were going to trim the palm trees! They don't fuck around!! 🤣

Yeah so LASD would play Highway Patrol by Junior Brown over their PA once a pursuit was over and they’d give us a little flyby. Complete and utter badasses. 😂

They always had our backs and and it was a relief to have them out with us.

My only story with a Chp helicopter 2003 had to go back to lake Ming for dragboat races. Took the gsxr in the trailer so i can ride it back sat after qualifying to wifes bday party. Sun morning I’m at bottom of grapevine got them farm roads ready to open it up.

Look up he’s following me saw him heading south turns around well after a couple minutes of at speed limit he figures not gonna see me do 150 mph. He went other way I went fast the other just for fun.

We’ve bought a lot of surplus from San Bernardino. Great group of maintainers.

Often the pilot on our Catalina Flites is an off duty LEO moonlighting.
Yeah, we tip them.

I seriously hope I don't ever get pulled over by you on the way to the river.. I don't think I could keep in my laughter if you walked up to my window with the chipper outfit on.🤣🤣

I look like him (not to misgender Chipper) anyway with all the snacks I keep in my mouth.

Everyone loves a chipmunk.

I flew a few times on the old LASO Air 5. Holy crap, what a rattletrap. Duct tape held everything in place. Headsets broken, exhaust leak into the interior. They flew that puppy hard!
