That's really unfortunate. I wonder if that's the real reason they cancelled. Was it sold out? Often times artists cancel shows because of low ticket sales. Hmm..

Btw, I'm a big fan.. Saw them open up for Kiss at the LA forum in 1977.. Best show ever...

… Saw them about 1980 at whatever that big place in Long Beach is… maybe the Long Beach Memorial auditorium???… Friend of mine John Moon Martin opened for them… their manager Ken Adamany was a longtime friend of John Martin’s… Moon got us four guest passes… Lived aboard about 5 miles away in the LA Harbor👍

Saw them at the Swing Auditorium in the late 70's early 80's. I pretty sure it was Whitesnake opening for them, the audience was throwing change at them and eventually booed them off the stage. David Coverdale was all pissed off as he's leaving the stage and says you can have your fucking Cheap Trick. They come out with Robin Zander riding a Harley and go right in to Gonna Raise He'll. It was a wild scene. They kicked ass

Straight up, they will never stop touring until one of them drops dead. Hardest working band, ever. They will be back.

I've seen them a lot, the last time was last summer. First time was 78' at the Schwiiiing😁

I was never a real fan. I might be able to tell you the name of one, maybe two of their songs. And I'm a musician. An OLD musician, but musician just the same.

The most I know about them is that they were the first choice for the PJ Soles movie, "Rock & Roll High School", but turned it down due to schedule issues. They settled on the Ramones, which moved them a couple of inches into the mainstream.

I just wanna have some kicks
I just wanna get some chicks

One of them??????????
Saw Lynard Skynard at fantasy springs and I'm not sure any of them were original members.🤣

Saw Cheap Trick New Years eve '79 and it was a great show. Betting a 2024 show in the heat at Blue Water won't compare, But tickets were probably $5.;)

Everyone mistook their Dream Police for my favorite 3 piece band "The Police".

They have definitely slowed down, and Bun E. Carlos is gone, but they still put on a great show. I collected a handful of Nielsen picks over the years. I will see them every chance I get!

The last time around I was stoked that they played Downed

Back around 98/99 we took a buddy's Stealth to Blyth for the weekend. Can't remember who forgot the CD case at home. Only CD we had was in the player. It was cheap trick. Had to listen to that cd over and over the whole weekend. Hated them after that trip.

New Years 79 at the Long Beach Arena. One of my favorites.
I was on the floor directly under one of the boxes that dropped stickers, picks, and shirts.

I ran the needle through the Cheap Trick Live at Budokan album after getting it as part of my eleven albums for a penny. music club in the late 70's early 80s. I still hear the drums of this intro in my head on a fairly regular basis. I always thought "Ain't that a shame" would make a fantastic country song. I was not joking, I loved this band in about the 5th grade. I must have made my parents crazy blasting "Surrender" on my K-Mart record player.

Great album, in fact the only Cheap Trick album I liked. Rarely a cover of a classic song like 'Ain't that a shame' is as good of better as the original. Theirs's is for sure.
Saw them in Huntington Beach at the old Golden Bear.

I've seen you mention Moon Martin a few times and when you do I always plop "...Cold Nightmare" on the turntable. Love that album. Might follow it up this morn with Southwind's 'Ready to Ride' album. Don't own a copy but thankfully it's on youtube.

I remember Columbia House too. And I remember listening to them on 8-track. Later I graduated to vinyl on an old plastic Gerard turntable that I found in the trash and somehow I bought the correct cartridge/needle at Licorice Pizza and got it working.

Vinyl and music is still my passion. I'm not at home, but was listening on Friday...

I have always been a huge Cheap Trick fan, so much that when I was working in Japan years ago we had a day off in Tokyo. I wanted to go to the Budokan Arena just to relive the time that Cheap Trick was there. It turned out that Eric Clapton was playing that night and I went to the concert. It was an incredible experience. The Japanese audience was silent and sat down the whole time, so cool.

I lost my record collection, when my Mom grabbed my brother and I in the middle of the night and we left her abusive husband. We had 5 minutes to take what we could carry, it still bugs me to this day, that I lost that collection. I tried to get it from the bastard for years, he would not give it up. I was really into music as a kid and had some pretty good albums that would be worth some money today. I always enjoyed the experience of going to the record stores and digging through the albums, reading the liner notes and trying to find unique stuff. Having grown up in a rural area of SoCa, a trip to Tower Records was like going to a national park. Angie's parents have two Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers albums with zipper album sleeve, one is un-opened. Not sure where those are at, but I bet that might be worth something to the right person.

Dang, didn't know they were even scheduled...! Would have loved to have seen them again. A couple years back I found an envelope in the bottom of a drawer with a bunch of my old tix stubs from back in the day when we had to camp on the sidewalk for like 3 days to get decent tix...

I used to write the opening bands on the back of ticket stubs (way back when they had openers...). The opener for this one was a band called "Off Broadway," had to look them up on YT to even remember them; they had one hit called "Stay in Time."

X was great, saw them at Pappy & Harriets a couple years back, they opened for Psych Furs...! Talk about tiny venues! Weezer this coming weekend @ Acrisure, they're a pretty reliable singalong commodity at this point!

Keep doing until you can't brother!

Saw X at the end of July at Pacific amphitheater with The Reverend HH opening for them. Always a good show with X, new album is pretty damn good too.

That's where we saw Buzzcocks! Trippy but super cool venue out in the middle of BFE. The Pretenders played there last year.

… Moon was a very good friend… At one time he lived across an easement from me in La Tuna Canyon…And would bring over his latest finished recording…Was never involved in any of his solo production… I think it was his first solo album… Escape From Domination…That was the first one he brought over… The title came from him being raised by a wealthy, but very domineering father… And that album was his deal…escaping from his father‘s domination…
… On the Southwinds Ready To Ride album… It wasn’t exactly the way I thought the production should be done…But it did OK…sold about 250,000 copies…
… Was in the studio with them for about 90% of that production…
… They probably could’ve hit it really big if they wouldn’t have run the band as a democracy… kept telling them to do a concept album instead of letting each band member take a turn at songwriting and production🤷🏽‍♀️
… Moon was able to drop by and visit up until about three weeks before his passing… Never smoked a cigarette in his life and what got him was…Lung cancer…Ya got me🤷🏽‍♀️

Dude, just went to the Buzzcocks website - P&H was last week...?!?!?! Super bummed I missed that one...🤬🤬🤬

Yeah, gotta keep an eye on that place, it is in the middle of BFE, but they get some really surprisingly cool bands up there; Paul McCartney & Arctic Monkey have played there. Black Flag will be there in Jan...

It was several decades after that Southwinds album came out before I was even aware Moon recorded that far back. It was a nice surprise. I actually think they might have recorded before this album? I should look it up, maybe as early as the mid '60s?

So did you ever cross paths with Gram Parsons? If so we need we have a drink and BS session some time. hahaha

I felt the same way when I heard about the Pretenders. P&H are promoted by "Dice" (I think) and they have an app and that's how I was able to score tics. Sign up and they keep you informed.

Ticketmaster handled the X tics and despite the usual fuckery that takes place whenever they are involved, I was able to land tics.

We recently saw Black Flag at No Values, but yeah that would be cool at P&H. The night before the Buzzcocks show Patty Smith played there, that would have been cool, too.

… OK… So after that cazy Dodger/Padre baseball game here we go…

… The Southwind actually formed at the University of Oklahoma… I’m going to guess probably Late 1963 or early 1964🤷🏽‍♀️… And it was John Martin Guitar and vocals… Jim Pulte Bass and lead vocals …Erik Dalton Drums… and Phil, Hope Organ and vocals…

… But at that time they were not known as the Southwind… They were known as the Deciples… They were hugely popular on the college circuit… Jim Pulte had a most amazing singing voice…
… Jim Pulte had a degree in sociology… I believe… Erik Dalton had degrees in psychology, sociology, and something else. I can’t remember what it was…
… I’m not too sure what Phil Hopes major was… But John Martin became two credits shy of a degree in pharmacology or whatever you call it when somebody is studying to be a pharmacist… These guys were no dummies…

… Probably early 1967 they made the trek west to the music scene in Los Angeles… And somehow hooked up with a black soul record label…Venture Records… that was headed by Mickey… Now I can’t remember his last name, …I may even have his first name wrong…but he had been one of the big boys at Motown…
… and knew the band from their college days… This was sometime after they had met Ken Adamanny, who later became the manager of Cheap Trick…

… After their trek west, it suddenly dawned on them that the Desciples was not a great name for a country rock band… So they came up with the name, Southwind…

… They were hooked up with a producer, Douglas, Fontaine Brown… Who did a really good job of producing their first album simply entitled …Southwind…

…The Southwind played a lot at a small beer bar called the Piier 7 in Van Nuys, California… Which is where I met them…
… Doug Brown would occasionally sit in with them and take over keyboards… I saw the writing on the wall as Doug Brown was a powerhouse, instrumentally and vocally, and I could see that Phil Hope was most likely going to leave the band and Doug Brown would take over his spot… on keyboards…Which is exactly how it happened…🤷🏽‍♀️

… So your thought of maybe John Martin had recorded in the 60s is absolutely correct…

… On to Gram Parsons… I can’t remember if Gram Parsons’s first band was the International Submarine Band or not…But the submarine band was actually very good…. They had been produced by a friend of mine to this day Suzi Jane Hokom…
… There was a club in the late 60s called Mr. Benjamin’s… That was in a small strip mall on Sepulveda Boulevard in Sherman Oaks. I think…. Some great music past through that place… Eric Burdon and War … Pretty sure Deep Purple played there… Blood Sweat and Tears… And more… Southwind was sort of the house band… So I was there quite a bit… One night, a very country band opened for the Southwind and I cannot remember for sure if by that time they were calling themselves The Flying Burrito Brothers… They were simply amazing. Gram Parsons sang like an angel… A friend of mine who was doing the sound for the Southwind recorded some of the Burrito Brothers first sets on cassette… Which he had kept in storage until a flood went right through his garage and the cassettes were destroyed… May have been some of Gram Parsons best ever live recordings… Kind of a shame…

… Quite a bit after Gram Parsons death… I was sitting around Suzy Jane Hokom’s house one day and a couple of guys came over and one of them and I forget his name..: or possibly both of them were the guys who stole Gram Parsons body from International Airport and took it out to the desert as per his wishes …they took his body out to Joshua Tree and lit it on fire…there was a pact amongst these guys that when one died, they would be torched at Joshua Tree… I can’t really remember, but I think one of these guys went to jail for a little little bit over this… The story had so much notoriety that a feature film was made out of it… Grand Theft Parsons…

… I think I got most of this right… Who would’ve ever thought it would’ve been a good idea to take a few notes on your way up through life so you could make sure you got ithe details correct as you later passed them on🤷🏽‍♀️

… I think I got most of this right… Who would’ve ever thought it would’ve been a good idea to take a few notes on your way up through life so you could make sure you got ithe details correct as you later passed them on🤷🏽‍♀️
Very cool! Thanks for posting that up.

That's a real shame that those tapes were lost!
Goes without saying that since Parsons passed he's taken on this almost mythical stature, kinda like Robert Johnson. His influence seems to be, from an outsiders pov, far reaching even to this day. One of those guys that I bet would have been cool to have a beer with. I like the film too, recently rewatched it.

I think I know who Suzi is. Back in the 60's a couple that were friends with my parents, grew up with them, were friends of a country singer named Virgil Warner (he might have been a relative of the wife?) and we had either an album or a 45 of them as a duo. I'm thinking a 45 as he gave us a stack of 45s when he was getting started or maybe he was already deep into his career, I honestly don't remember that and I don't know if he's still around. I think he was know more as a song writer? I actually forgot all about him until a few years ago when I was moving stored crap from one place to another and I found an old guitar pick with his name on it that he gave me. Most of my parents albums and 45s went up when moms house burnt down. Bummer because they had good taste in music in the 60s.

I can't remember the song they sang together on that 45, I was 9 or 10 then so it's been a minute, but i remember her name because the girl next door was named Suzi too. hahaha

… Well you certainly are correct …here is Suzi Jane Hokum and Virgil Warner… I think April Wine was somewhat of a hit. I can’t really remember… It is actually very good….

Suzi Jane has had quite a life. The people she has known is quite a story and could be a movie unto itself… I should call her as she is having cataract vision problems… An eye surgeon screwed up a cataracts surgery and the last time I talked to her a couple months ago she was afraid of losing her vision altogether….
… She has become good friends with my Neighbor girl… The daughter I never had and Suzi Jane wants to see Neighbor girls new baby… But life has somewhat gotten in the way and we have not been… as of yet… been able to take the baby over to Suzy‘s house in Toluca Woods which is adjacent to Toluca Lake …

… I am pretty sure Virgil has passed on as Suzi told me that only one of her former lovers is still alive… Ok…Suzy I get the message…

… Suzi Janes major claim to fame was when her boyfriend was Doug Dillard of the Dillards… She got pissed off at him and took her brand new Oldsmobile W30 hot rod 442 and aimed at him as he was standing on the sidewalk in front of the Troubadour…she missed him, but her car landed in the restaurant next-door… The story has been posted many times on various rock ‘n’ roll artists memoirs of the 60s… Who says LSD can make you make poor decisions in life🤷🏽‍♀️🍷

… Going to go on my morning walk… And then give Suzi Jane a call… Last time I called she did not pick up… Suzi Jane will be 81 in January… Which might be somewhat of a concern🤷🏽‍♀️
