Looking for some info on these boats. Seen a couple for sale and am really interested in one. How is the quality. How do they ride and handle. Biggest question is how do they take a bigger engine like 150 or 200. Most I see have 115s or 125s it seems. I'm looking at an 84 bubble deck style. I think it's a 18'. Would they be a good option for needles area and parker? Any experience or knowledge on these would be greatly appreciated.

some were mod vp bottoms some were v bottoms, which one are you looking at?

I owned an 84 16’. When I bought it there was an Evinrude 115 on it. I put a Merc 150 on the back of it and it was a total blast. Handled great this boat was setup for a ski boat which I never did. Lou that use to work at Al’s outboards said these boats back in the day where built solid. Supposedly the larger ones ran the Catalina Ski race. I wish I would have never sold it.

A buddy of mine has a 91 203 tunnel with a black Max 200 hanging in the back. It's gorgeous and built very well. Screams with that 200 in the back and handles surprisingly well. Not sure if an 18'er will accommodate a 200 but when it comes to build quality, it's there.

rumor has it the bottom was a splash of a stoker, so thats definitely a plus if its one of the tunnel versions

I'm looking at a bee bottom. I believe it's an 18. Probably wolnt put a 200 on it but maybe a 150. It has a 115 inline merc but needs repairs. However theres another one that's for sale with a good 150 but the boat is pretty trashed. Thinking about buying both and using the good motor on the other hull, lol. Curious how they ride. I've been in a few other similarly sized boats and the bottom seams to resemble my buddy's california(Roger's splash I believe) That boat rode pretty well for a 18 footer.

I have a 76, 18'6" bubble deck with an 88 150 Black Max on it(plack in the boat says 155hp max). run a 19 pitch prop because we liked to ski and was good for overall pull and quickness out of the hole.
It runs about 50mph as it is. tried a 21 pitch and it was dog out of the hole but pushed it up over 60. (with 4-5 people and cooler)
We boated mainly in Blythe and down river from there zero issues handling that, now the stories I hear of how bad Parker can get you might get beat up a little but it will handle it.

I can tell you for a fact that the boat will handle a 150 no problem. All we did was put an aluminum plate on the outside and also the inside but keep in mind my boat was solid from tip to stern. The one issue we had was it wanted to porpoise so if you notice we put the cav plates on and notched them down one click. Took care of the problem. It really hated flat glass water. Needed some chop for it to run. I GPSed this boat with 2 people and ran 74.

Back in the 70's I had a 16' with a Evinrude 140. I loved that boat. It was so much fun and it handled the 140 easily. I had it propped for skiing and there wasn't any stock Merc "Tower of Power" around here that could beat it in a quarter mile.

The 18s can handle old school 2.4/2.5 no prob,and there is no wieght diff between V6 150s and 200s back then.If i had the 200,i would put a 150 decal on it and roll...In fact now that i think about it,i did exactly that in mid/late 80s with a 18' sidewinder Vbottom..chime walking sombitch,but got it to 82mph

I'm sure it can handle the weight no problem, just didnt want to put something on there and over power the boat. I want to make sure it will be safe with the power and speed.

Talk to Lou at socal speed and marine. He use to or was part of racing a 20 footer with a promax 300 . Don't quote me on that part but I remember him saying something about 90+ mph .

I really appreciate all the replies guys. I'm not really sure what I'm gonna do yet. I'm torn between a couple boats for sale. This avenger is for sure the cheapest but needs the most work. From what it sounds like it would be a real fun boat and I primarily boat in the needles are down to the sandbar and in blythe above the dam and I think it would be perfect. Need to get some more info from the seller before I make any moves.

I have my dad's original 1982 avenger 20 ft bass/ski with a 1978 black max 200. Was gifted to me by my older half brother. It is still in pretty good condition. Will do 60 with a full tank and two guys in the boat. Great sturdy and fast boat

I’ve got a 17ft avenger, was my dads back in his glory days, but after he let the core rot out I decided to restore the boat for myself. As it sits now with the Johnson 115 it’ll top out at 57 with one person in the boat. From what I’ve heard, you really don’t want to go over a 150hp on these boats. An old boat racer told me when you get these boats over 75mph they can get pretty sketchy due to their narrow pad, and the nose likes to lift up and cause you to flip

I had a brand new one in the late 80's, the tunnel with a 200 black max. Don't remember a lot about it, except for back then it was pretty fast.

No not Stoker was a Taylor or Solution (Solution bought Taylor molds) which was a Sleekcraft splash.
Same for Stoker/Baker except he kept modifying over the years.

if you plan on carrying liability insurance (and you should) keep the H.P. at or below the H.P. rating stamped on the coast guard plate.
