Pops missed a lot of things, gone working. I was doing the same thing to my kids when Pops passed. I was about 30, and was so proud of what I was able to do after my wreck...I lost sight of what really mattered. Can't change the past, only steer the future.

Fathers, doing what was needed and they thought "HAD" to be done because that was the way you do it. I would never criticize or 2nd guess any Father, who worked hard for the Family and sacrificed so much, but they missed and their children did Miss so much.

I was blessed growing up on a farm to work with and alongside my father.

Funny. Just yesterday I was listening to that song like I have many hundreds of times before. But yesterday it really hit me...such a poignant, but awesome, masterpiece. Thanks for sharing 🙂

My thought exactly, just like you I have listened to it so many times and even sang along, LOL, but when it came on this time for some reason did pay close attention to the words and their important story.

My son just got married over the weekend, and Brought back a ton of memories, This song in particular.
I'm happy to say we've had more than one long talk, no one is perfect, but we're in a great place as Father/Son.

🍺🍺🍺

EDIT

MY old man and I get along, but lost times, and missed opportunities He doesn't understand.

I surely don't resent Pops in any way. When I did work with him as a youngster, it was roofing...it sucked balls, but taught me a lot. Later in life, really the last 2 years of his, we talked more than we had the previous 30 combined. We had something in common, working to support my family as he did his, Those 2 years I wish I could stretch...they meant more to me than my childhood did really.

I had a great childhood. No boats or motorcycles, but darn we could pack the 70 fury for a camping trip with equip from blue and green stamps. My parents made the best of every penny. I really miss my dad every day.
Great song!

Mixed feelings, especially the older I get. He worked hard, and us kids, older brother, and younger sister, didn't want for anything.
Boats, motorcycles, first cars and all that.
But his choices in women wasn't the greatest. Had a step mom for 3ish years. Fail. She's not my mom.
My senior year, another possible step mom, with 8 kids... not for me. I opted out. Went my own way.
He ended up getting married again, to yet another woman. She ended up with everything, when he died at 58. I was 26. Kids be damned. Whatever. I'm at 54 now, I see things a little different. I miss my pops, but he was no saint.
I learned a lot from him. And what not to do. Thanks Dad

Great song!
X2 and I remember those Blue Chip stamps well! Plenty of fishing and camping trips as both were cheap to pull off. I never got to know my pops as an "adult", when I was 20 he died in a fiery head-on at Ludlow/I-40 on his way to Vegas. But yeah, I miss him and we often ponder how things would be with him here.

Like so many in the 70s growing up divorced family. Father in life but not on the daily. Parents doing what was need to keep the kids growing. Heard the song many times over the years. It was alway very touching to me to see the possible path of a family’s relationship trough birth and death

When our son came into our lives I was truly blessed. I was able to work in the family business and take time off as needed. Those times were spent on field trips with our son in school. Sadly for my wife it was not as often. As she would save her vacation days for farther travels. We would travel the country as a family exploring. Now as a late 20 year old our son has expressed how valuable the times were to him growing up. Now coming into my late 50s sadly am starting to see the other side of the coin. I find myself wishing for more time…..

Well what do you know. At 57 years old I learned that this song was not written by Cat Stevens.

It's a great song.

This is my "cry" song as me and my boys call it. My Pop's played it at my grandfather's funeral. We didn't come from much, but we never did without. I was raised to always provide for the family, even if that meant you had to miss things like Thanksgiving dinner because you are out of the state working... Fucking life if hard, being a Dad can sometimes make it feel impossible!

When you coming home son?
