I worked in the performance exhaust industry for awhile. I have seen Carven products, but never have heard them in person. Exhaust is difficult, because it is so subjective.

To me one setup might sound bitchin. Might be too loud for you, and then too quiet to the next person. I think every muffler has its place on certain applications. There are also a handful of designs that sound good and don't flow well.

you would be surprised at how many "muffler" deletes we do ... loud seems to be the new cool...:rolleyes

The only muffler deletes that sound decent are behind a snail or large snail :D

Most diesels sound good straight piped. I think the right muffler sounds better though.

The customer is always right even though quite a few mufflers scavenge better and make more powah!!! Also I would run an H or an X all day long.

Im getting old i guess. Just bought Melissa a new Tundra. Came with TRD dual exhaust. Nice system. Stainless true dual from front to back. I freeking hate the way it sounds. Too noisy and sounds like an old POS with a glass pack. Id put it back to quiet mode in a heartbeat

The TRD kit is made by Borla. Sounds like crap. I worked there. They basically add pipe diameter and a muffler. If it sounds good to Dave Borla he okays it. You would be shocked at how many vehicles only pickup sound. No power. A few actually lose power.

I agree. Sounds real bad. I dont like the looks of duals either. Im probly gonna yank it off and have a single set up put on

The Mbrp kits seem well made for the price. The key is to have a straight through muffler that flows and sounds good. Some of the more inexpensive kits I have heard sound the best.

Or you could have a kit built. Price goes up, and you may not like the sound. Listen to some sound clips on YouTube.

How do you feel about the newer black widow exhausts?

I have not put my hands on them, but from what I have read they look very well made. It is tough because some products can be quality well made, but they just do not perform.

Magnaflow builds a quality product. They have a very advanced manufacturing facility. I have installed a few kits that sounded terrible. I have installed kits that sounded okay, and kits that sounded really good.

Best recommendation I can give is to hear it in person if possible on a similar vehicle.

I have heard them twice, but both on LS applications. I have no use for them as I have a diesel but was just more curious than anything.

on all the new mustangs pretty much the only way to get a good sound is just to delete the muffler entirely.

The exhaust world psychological horsepower , if its loud its got to make power , not . The way vehicles are designed now they are dammed efficient . I like the muff deletes for filtered diesels worthless , my 15 6.7 Cumins the factory leaves the muffs of now .

I ran Borla Stainless headers on my 350 TBI 92 Chevy Sport truck along with their muffler. I loved the sound.

Fast forward to just a couple months ago standing behind a new Mustang GT in a parking lot as he leaves. Dude gets on it and the sound is awful.

I had a 3" mandrel bent x pipe done on my chevelle back in 99, my friend had had it done, and to me nothing beat the sound of the x pipe. I have had three chamber flows behind it forever and I like the sound, I definitely do not like loud for loud sake, my car is very quiet inside but after seeing some vids at the track, it does make a racket in the upper rpms for sure. Spin techs were on my radar back then, I liked the unique sound of them too.

Yes Magnaflow sounds like crap & cost too much wholesale I used to sock them not for quite a few years , flowmaster also sound like shit unless you have decent horsepower 500+ very stiff cam thats when they start to shine , graty , raspy . Magnaflow & marketing go hand in hand for the backyard guys .

The parts that put them on the map were great. Now it is all about money. How to supposedly build a quality product which is all foreign material now. There is one guy in R and D that knows his stuff. Final word is DB's. He is a wanna be car enthusiast.

Glad I meet the Flowmaster prerequisites :D For me, what sounds good or ok, really boils down to the application, I hate the "throw flowmasters" on everything attitude or any other brand, my ear and eye kind have to agree on what is going on, the only thing I really do like though is old cars that sound a little different due to an X, or even better, turbos, but new cars should not sound like muscle cars, for my .02 at least.

What are the thoughts on Gibson? I had a Gibson exhaust on my Silverado and loved it.. It wasn't loud but had a low rumble to it. Between it and the headers and the intake it helped the truck quite a bit.. (Wasn't down shifting every two seconds)

I had a MagnaFlow on my '95 Thunderbird (first car out of high school) and it sounded great. Went from the dual muffler/exhaust, 3 cats and a resonator to a custom single MagnaFlow with only 2 cats. Sounded really good! Didn't really help or do much with that heavy turd but at least it sounded good.

I replaced the single OEM dual outlet muffler on my Viper with twin s/s Magnaflows [ basically a straight through :thumbsup] and it sounds just right. Not too loud but added a nice deeper rumble which is not synonymous with V-10 engines.

Most important part of the exhaust note, IMHO, is being able to hear good compression at idle :tbi

That's a major knock for V6 engines in general...they always sound a bit weird, some more than others.

I just bought a 14 Ram with the Hemi , I'm leaving the exhaust stock ! The long distance drives are way more comfortable without the drone that all these aftermarket
mufflers create . All my trucks in the past were modified , but no longer !

i dunno about the 4.0 v6. but the g37/g35 had a great sounding tuned stock exhaust. nothing too obnoxious.

perhaps find a muffler set from one of those cars and slap it on your frontier.

Borla made the TRD kit for the 1st generation Tundra. For the 2nd and 3rd generation Tundra it is made by Tenneco whom also makes the OEm factory system.

Just stumbled across this thread. I install alot of Carven mufflers. Popular with young guys. And yes, seems muffler delete has been all the rage for a year now.

The proliferation of turbos means mufffler-delete is a lot less annoying, methinks.
