I don't like the way the builder situated the fireplace- I would like to relocate it to the right a few inches so that is is center on the wall. While I am at it, I would like to retile the fireplace, change the mantel, recess the area behind the tv. Basically I would like to go from the second picture to the first, A few questions I have are: what would this cost in material? Is this mdf? Where would I buy the material, HD has mdf sheets? and lastly how long would it take an average handyman with some carpentry experience to complete? tv idea.jpg IMG_0383.jpg

how much do you want to spend? in both time and money.

to me that looks about $5k and a week to do it the right way ( that's just parts not labor)

Yours looks like it has chimney? Those heavy steel vent pipes are not easy to relocate.

I agree it would be waaaaaay easier to fill in the wall on the left to make it look centered.

That looks like the niche in the wall I have at my house. Does it stick out on the outside of your house? If it's a gas fireplace its should be hollow behind there.

My tv is wall mounted in the niche with a long mount. I built cabinets to fill is in and stuffed the biggest tv I could in there to fill up the hole. I want to center the fireplace and put the tv above it eventually in the future. I'll look for a picture.

I'd say it be cheaper to get a smaller TV to center out, then re-tile the face

Why not take the money and have a bad ass custom built in made for the niche??

It's probably like that for a structural reason. The easiest fix would be to build out the left side so it's balanced.

Yep...

This is what we did.

Build it to the left and then make shelves for the audio video stuff down low and display items up top.

I'd like to do that as well, I dont have the skill set for that so I would have to hire someone for that. I am planning on adding a tv mount that you can pull out and down when viewing the tv-- so it is at a better eye level when watching tv on the couch. Those mounts still stick out about 5 inches when pushed all the way in-- so I thought I would regframe that area and create a recessed drywalled inset-- then the project snowballed when I looked at pictures online and found that one.. I might just add to the left so it is centered and the niche built in.

thanks for the replies

Your problem is the fireplace. Call the gas company to come out and disconnect it, and then remove it completely. There are plenty of Drywall handyman's, that can fill-in the drywall and tape it off ($500-1000).

By the way, always get the bigger TV.;)
