A friend called me after he had to rescue his sons car on the side of the freeway. Its a Toyota Camry and I guess his kid over heated it and just left it. He sent me this video and I have no idea. It sounds like a supercar trying to start now.

Then last night I got a phone call from another friend that was broken down out of town after over heating. I took a belt and coolant to him and he clearly lost a belt at midnight and his car sounds the exact same. Sounds like there is no combustion happening.

Some Toyota engines loosing the belt may result in pistons kissing the valves.
Happened to the neighbor chick.
Interesting. I just looked up both cars, 2007 Camry 4cylinder in the video says its an interference and so is the 2014 Forte I was working on last night. So they both need a new top end potentially then. Hmm. Thats unfortunate for them. I hear no knocking and other noises. Just doesn't sound like a normal engine turning over.

Belt, you mean drive belt not timing?

No compression. She's done.

2003 and later were timing chains on the 4 cylinders...Can't see that failing after an overheat. It's hurt. Shop for a new engine or car.

Yeah. Kid last night lost the drive belt. So that was easy enough to replace even though it was a sideways engine with now room. I wish I would have asked him to start it before I went for an hour drive into the desert. Tow truck took 6 hours to get there. I felt bad for the kid. His dad drive all the way from San Diego to try and rescue him. I just towed it back to Yuma at my house and they are getting a uhaul to take home this morning.

Yeah I vaguely remember neighbor girl had to get the head done on her Toyota and she mentioned the belt failed and took out the valves. Don't remember what engine she had.

Check the oil and recovery tank. My niece's Toyota ate a head gasket and sounded about the same. Had coolant in the oil and oil in the recovery tank. Mechanic told her new engine. My brother had a neighborhood kid take it apart and could clearly see where gasket had failed. Did have to have the head milled flat again, but car runs great for the last 2 or 3 years.

I doubt the valves hit the pistons in either scenario....we probably have a severely warped head, failed headgasket, and very likely damaged piston rings with zero tension on the cylinder walls. The kia is a belt motor and the camry is a chain motor. Kia is a POS to begin with and probably he's lucky it's made it as far as it did. These aren't worth working on really past basic maintenance stuff IMO. The camry might be worth it if you can find a used engine, but likely not. I just bought a 2007 camry XLE V6 loaded and absolutely MINT for a friend of mine for $6500. A 4 cylinder isn't worth that, and you'll probably pay $3-5000 for a used engine and installation at a decent shop.

I won't work on engines that have overheated to the point of having no compression...if it got that hot, there are other issues lurking that I can't see.

I look at these "failures" and worse all the time, although a catastrophic overheat or oil loss event can occur rapidly theres temp guages , oil guages and warning lites "bells and whistles" . One of the main things my administrators consider is a clause called "failure to protect" , When trouble starts to rear its head its time to pull over and shut the engine down not drive to the next exit or shop or "destination"

If it was overheating and they just kept driving it till the engine shut off I am guessing something heat related and not timing belt. Stuck valves, burnt piston, head gasket, cracked block, etc.

He lost the serpentine drive belt not a timing belt. Check for water in the oil. Check for oil in the coolant. Check for external coolant leaks at the head gasket. Remove the spark plugs and determine if coolant is leaking into the cylinder's. Have some one spin the motor over and look for coolant coming out of the cylinder’s, spark plug holes. In my experience running a overheated engine till it quits is never a good thing!

The four cylinders can do more than blow a head gasket. They pull the studs out of the block. It's pretty common, to the point they make an insert tool/jig kit. If they were to repair it themselves, I'd have the head checked while putting inserts in. Not a real bad job, and can be cheaper than finding another car.
