Those offshore San Diego early morning runs sound great. Bet a guy could pull in close to the Point Loma kelp and catch a couple nice Calico Bass.
After having ridden rivers and lakes on jet skis, hauling ass up and over glassy ocean swells never quite knowing what sea creature you might encounter coming over the top was thrilling.
My first encounter with a pod of Dolphins while riding a ski was at first more "OH SHIT", Intimidating". They were much larger than they'd appeared from the flybridge of my sportsfisher.
Wife was riding a ways distant when she saw the school pop up around me, she was initially hesitant to come closer, but eventually did and we both rode along with them for a stretch. I guess their curiosity waned and after a run union, they headed off in search of breakfast.
Of course after that, I couldn't wait to meet up with a pod again, but only found them one other morning.

I used to enjoy sliding off the ski and snorkeling along the NAS North Island side of the diminutive Zuniga breakwater at the Pt Loma Harbor Entrance.
I never did fish off my ski, but I've seen some more modern ones that look like a tournament sportsfishers with all the rod holders and coolers hanging off them.

We'd launch around 7-8AM using the public ramp out on the Coronado Strand in Glorietta Bay. Ride out through SD Bay, play in the ocean for as long as we felt our fuel level was sufficient to get back to the ramp, then fight the often nasty boat waves in SD Bay heading back to the Coronado Bridge.
We'd beach the skis at that cool little beach under the bridge and bust out the coffee and donuts for our post-ride treat.

Wish I'd taken a lot more pics, but that's always easy to say in retrospect, guess at the time I was to involved with living the moment verus recording it for posterity. 😁

Our riding friends Jim, Debbie & My wife Patty taking a break and soaking in the realization of just how small of fish we were in this new much larger pond. 😂

Then one of Jim & Debbie off Naval Air Station San Diego and the Del Coronado. I always wanted to ride to the Coronado Islands, but never did or work the logistics of carrying extra gas onboard.

One of my wife with Point Loma in the background. We found that wearing scuba diving thin lycra, with kayaking pants and jackets work amazingly well and much better than wetsuits for cold weather / water riding. Worked well in the dead of winter at Havasu too. The Kayaking clothes are designed to keep the water out (Not falling off the ski was key to making this work however😂) and cut the wind chill as well.

Here's a pic from another AM trip with my wife's brother and his 1995 Yamaha 1200 I'd sold him. This was the really cool little beach under the Coronado bridge, only accessible by water or tromping across the Coronado Municipal Golf Course. For fun you could pick up golf balls that would occasionally plunk into the water, there was a lot so it seemed nobody ever hiked down to the beach to retrieve them.
