We have everything set in motion, and this Carmageddon deal with the 405 freeway happened. Long story short we have everything in place and ready to go, but we can not get a frequency from the FCC to broadcast from the Helicopters back to the Hotels. No frequency = no live feed. It was suggested that we record the race and broadcast it, but again with no frequency, the announcers can't see the race for the audio etc..

I would like to say, this isn't one of those we threw in the towel deals. SpotonDL has fought, clawed, bribed, borrowed, and begged to try and make this happen. A frequency is never impossible to come by, but with this news deal, every news agency in town is here, and the LAPD took the rest of the frequencies.. We even went so far as to talking to main guy at the FCC for the west coast, and tried to run it in a 2 hour window to no avail..

It is completely out of our hands at this point. :( All sponsors of the feed will be refunded their money, checks returned etc.. Any additional costs will be absorbed by CSR and myself.

Just mount Vic's new speakers to the Chopper.

You will hear it from the shore to the Island with no problem:D

The media is full of shiaaat! They act like people want to be reminded of how fucked the transportation system is in Southern California. We all know it sucks. So what do they do, throw it in our face even more. :fingers:

Well, CRAP!!! I was looking forward to doing this project on so many fronts it's not even funny...

I have never, and I honestly mean NEVER, had a complete shutout when it comes to frequency coordination/cooperation. Hell, SuperBowl, ProBowl, the Academy Awards, NBA Allstars, MLB Allstars, Breeders Cup, etc. all have freqs. that are coordinated for specific time slots (I get it from X time to Y time & will be off for you so that you can have it at A time to B time...).

It really sucks when you have the federal govt. FCC rep email you with a "Dear John, too bad, so sad" note...

Unwinding this was no small task either. Tons of phone calls to participating parties & business peers, etc. with the lame excuse of Carmaggedon. It's a potential friggin traffic jam, get over it, LOL...

Oh well, sorry for this turn of events. We truly did the absolute best we could... We'll be back for the next big event hopefully...

This is Apollo 13, signing off...;)

I got asked to see if I could talk to someone at our Emergency Operations Control Center about giving up a frequency they aquired from the FCC for the time of this event.

As it turns out, I know the no. 4 guy in charge from the Incident Commander on this one.

Response was this:

There's a big concern started by LAFD that if a fire broke out on Mullholand Dr., the logistics of getting resources in there will be huge, they want all frequencies they got in CASE that happens for the duration of the weekend.

There are already 200 extra fireman, trucks staged up there for duration of the weekend to combat this. FWIW, if that section of hillside went, good chance they'll lose 50 people to flames EVEN when they're prepared, that's how bad it is up there, seen it myself over the years.

Next issue is some sort of other event (Earthquake/bombing/Mumbai style active shooter scenario).

Idea is, if city has to go to tactical alert, they're going to need all channels they can get/have.

I tried, can't argue (edit:"win") that one, WAY above my pay scale;)

Reminder, this closure will happen again next year, I'd try to find out from Kiewitt in the fall when they plan to do it again.....Or book that frequency now......:thumbsup

I appreciate you're help LR.. :) I knew it was a done deal once I heard the LAPD had the rest of them. They aren't going to give them up, even for a 2 hour window in the AM. How many frequencies do you really need on an "if" though to be honest, and realistically "If" the sky fell in, it's not like we wouldn't cooperate 100% and immediately yield to emergency broadcasting etc..

I hope they pick a different weekend next year, but either way yes we will be working on our broadcast WAAAAYYYY in advance to make sure it doesn't happen again.

RD every time there is a major fire we setup portable cell site trucks to support the FD and Forest Service. When you have so many different teams available from various jurisdictions, the radio is crazy and you have to wait quite a while to get through... Only so many calls can make it through a duplex pipe.:thumbsup
