Gee Dave I'm surprised you don't know this one.
Circa 1770 and relations with England were already strained due to over taxation. Small iron mines were beginning to pop up in the colonies . It was at this time that Ames Shovel and Hoe was established (still in business today, you probably have one of their products). Up until this time the colonists had two choices for shovels, they could use a hardwood shovel sourced locally or purchase a metal shovel from England. The cost of the metal shovel from England was hugely expensive but with the advent of Ames building a local manufacturer they could get a metal shovel locally at a price that the small farmer could afford. The King had lots of reasons for this to stop , among them being the lose of sales of farm implements to the colonists but also he wanted all the iron being mined in America not to mention that having the Colonists building forges gave them to much independence and the ability to manufacture weapons. The King banned the manufacture of metal farming implements in America. This was actually the straw that broke the camels back and sparked the revolution.
