Copper and the Sand Bar are closed so...

Exactly... Used to go to havi a lot in the mid 90's to 2005 or so, mom lived there for a while till she passed. Was a bit younger and had a bunch of younger friends we usually boat on a quiet lake so the spectacle and the "views"a few time a year was fun( I dint go to college and live in a rural town so the crowd and party atmosphere was a sight to see) .
Back then we would boat a bit then head to copper canyon to see the show, it was nice cuz you can only get there by boat so not much riff raff and you didn't have to worry about kids watching unless their parents were dumb enough to to bring them there. Then law enforcement started shutting it down on busy weekends so the show moved up to the sandbar, same situation could only get there by boat. Then they started closing down the sandbar and the show moved to the channel where anybody can get to it including idiots and kids. So then the public complains and law enforcement cracks down on everything. Typically, government screwed it up, if they were all still open it would spread it out again and you could choose what vibe you wanted to hang out in.
Around 2000 on Memorial Day we left the house before 6am got in line at Windsor after an hour they closed it when we were 2nd from the gate, went the marina, closed full. Went back home till 9am drove up to topock and launched easily and just boated down.

The carbon monoxide is the one thing I like in the channel on a holiday weekend!

Sunday is always channel day for us. 4 days on a 24’ chaparral takes its toll. Got our nice beach spot at 530 this morning... but now I’m stuck with la cukaracha all day!

Whens the videos of site 6 gonna be posted? :D

Wife and I used to go Memorial, labor day, 4th until one year she says to me, "We live on the beach and we leave a place people come to vacation. We travel and fight the traffic and crap to go sit on a lake with thousands of others....Why?" I'm like, good point. We stopped traveling on holidays and actually really enjoy staying home on big weekends now.

This weekend has sucked. Normally don't go on Holidays but I gotta say, it's starten to not be as enjoyable anymore. 35years on the Lake and I'm starting to not enjoy it as much anymore unless it's early spring and fall.. Too many idiots on the water and too many of those water tank ski boats choppin everything up. My 23 struggles in 2 foot swells everywhere. Today was a disaster. 3 Dunes was full by 8am. And takin a long ride was not an option in the rough water so drifting on the south end in the no wake zone was the only option,,,,at least the waters deep and clean with no exhaust fumes but as soon as you go out of the zone it's all water tanks making u-turns every 300 feet.

Unlike lawn chairs, you can leave your boat unattended in the channel and no one pushes it off the beach....
but one year they did just that , pulling in at day break and seeing 6 boats floating around. And the year they pulled the plugs on a few boats too.

While I enjoyed looking at some boats lining up the shores of the channel, listening to the cacophony of 12 different tunes from a dozen boats doesn't make sense to hang around all day, for me anyway. Definitely would choose a cove or a quite beach if lived in Havazoo.;) My lakes [ Skaha or Okanagan lakes] offer awesome spots to hang around only seeing boats in a distance. Some special holiday weekends may get busy, but nothing to the extreme of Havasu's. The boat at my house is patiently waiting to get wet, but I'm off going camping for a week to our fave place, Porteau Cove, off the Sea to Sky highway near Squamish, fighting through Vancouver traffic! I should stay home since it's paradise.:D

Before we moved here we would come out and camp at Cattail cove. More of our friends had boats then and we would wind up meeting them in the channel so we would look at it as a bit of a destination trip for us and for a while watching the shit show was fun, then our friends started to not want to go anywhere from there. We rarely ever spend any significant time in the channel anymore. It is a good place to hang out a little bit waiting on friends to show up and take off somewhere and then maybe for a little while after getting back.

I went down there yesterday and flew my drone, and took some cell phone videos for Grads so he could see the shit show.. lol

We were there less than five seconds and this dumbass in a Kachina backed into a boat right in front of us. He hit hard enough that s guy fell off the back of his boat right about the time put it in gear going forward. Guy ended up in the water and is lucky he didn’t get Sliced and diced.. Kachina just drove away but the cops got him. No DUI or anything near as I could tell. They were doing breathalyzers on everyone a couple hundred yards away but never saw anyone handcuffed.

Then a few minutes later some guy fell off the back of a pontoon. Driver never noticed. Lol. Guy actually swam and caught back up to the boat (all the while the driver is still going mind you) he managed to get the ladder down and climb back up! The driver just kept on going and never noticed! Lol.

You gotta wonder if these people know there’s props on these boats?

Stacy has pics of it all. It’s unreal..

Pics added if guy falling off pontoon boat. Lol. Note the boat never stopped!

40 years on this lake and last weekend was the most crowded, stupidest people, irresponsible boaters, all around cluster f I have ever seen...
after a nice day on the lake and some time in a cove with friends, one of my crew asks if I would mind going thru the channel. well, another example of a dumb boating move I said sure....from crazy horse to the bridge...crowded, good sightseeing, no drama.
from the bridge to Thompson Bay...a total disaster and the prize goes to the j offs in the two big Fountains. No regard for anything but themselves, caused multiple near misses and just were oblivious...
another pontoon with an idiot simulating sex with the front seat...cops light him up and then proceed to side tow him thru the crowd to a parking spot...yikes....
OK...back to the docks at islander and another bad decision...Turtle pool for a drink...Bro fights in the pool, drunks everywhere, lots of eye candy,....OK..this was fun

next big weekend I am.....

doing it again

Hmm, we have not been in close to 8 years now. I say every day I miss boating in Havasu on party weekends, but now I am changing my mind.

We would be out there on big weekends. We would go to breakfast then launch around 9 or so (never an issue at Windsor at the time). Then we would head up to Sand Bar or some place where people were hanging out (sand bar was closed on the big weekends since 01 I think). But if Sand bar was closed we always found another place and hung with friends.

Most of the day we would cruise from spot to spot then by late in the day when we were getting tired we would finish the day in the channel. Usually after 3:30 or so.

So now people sit in the channel from the morning until the afternoon in to the evening? That just seems like a complete waste of time. To each their own.

We boat in Tahoe and surrounding lakes now. Very pretty but too God damn cold.

Alright Grads so Inwent down there to fly my drone and make a decent video for RDP, but I walked about 600 yards of the channel and filled it on my cell phone.

Several RDP members in this video!
Here’s a few minutes of unedited video from Sunday night as the party was winding down.

We never go on a holiday weekend, but had to this week since the boat vibrated at an idle the week before. And we have a big group coming next week. My dad thought it was wet spark plug wires from the dogs. We got to the channel at 445 for a spot. Boat didn’t vibrate at all. We were going to leave the channel at 10ish once my mom joined us; she hates the channel. But she actually was extremely entertained this year by it and we didn’t leave until 7. The next day we cruises around and went into coves. Boat didn’t start vibrating again at idle until our lab got on the boat.

The only thing that annoyed me on the channel was the amount of people on pwcs and boats on their cell phones prob taking selfies not paying attention to where they were going. Most of them almost hit a boat in front of them or coming to close to the sides. Here’s some pictures of the morning. We had some chairs to the side of our boat for our friends who showed up at 7. if they showed up any later, my dad was going to remove the chairs because there were very few spots left and my dad didn’t want to get into any issues.

Why would anyone go in that water after Several hundred drinkers process 98.6 degree Coors light into the channel all day.
I don’t think it really matters with all the chemicals that the water department dumps in the river

I can only assume this is a plus for most business' in the immediate area. Who else is walking around in the desert, in 100F plus weather, spending money?

Stopped going on big weekends about 15 years ago and dont miss it.Back then i was tired of the launch ramp traffic and channel traffic i know its worse now.We use to go in early 90s all the time could get a spot in the channel easily at 10 am then maybe to copper here and there then other times sand bar while most thought copper canyon was the only place to go.

I still do glamis on big weekends but i can camp far easily find an isolated camp spot and can also avoid the crowded areas if i choose to.

Late 80’s except the first one. My guess is the first one is the sand drags.
First one was a few years ago at olds that car came down the hill wide open and throttle got stuck is what i heard. It ended up jumping and landing against a truck and killing one person.Never heard the outcome of the driver though but never seen that car out since. Was at olds hill
