My old next door neighbor let me take his toy hauler to Sturgis. When I had to move I stored my boat in his shop at his house. When I crashed my dirt bike shattering my left leg and had to spend a week in the hospital, he paid to have the 200' iron fence I was in the process of building finished. He's a very experienced boater and makes a lot of money. While he was storing it, I told him to use it whenever he wanted. I don't know if he did or not. But what I do know is that in life there are more important things than a hunk of fiberglass with an engine in the back.

I've never had anyone ask but there are a few people I'd have no problem loaning to but they are all boat owners and also have the financial wherewithal to repair or replace it if something happened. I don't think I'd loan one out to someone that was not an experienced boater though, no matter how much money they had.

I loaned a Harley out to a buddy once as he had a business customer coming to town and they wanted to ride. He loaned his bike to the guy and rode mine. I didn't worry because I knew he could easily afford to replace the bike. He also had let me drive his big dollar Top Gun and 42X so I figure if he trusted me with those then I'd ought reciprocate with something a fraction of the value of his boats!

There is one friend I trusted to drive one of my boats, and he worked at the dealership that we bought our Top Gun from. That was the only person that drove one of my boats.

We just bought a brand new side x side, and one of my best friends is the mechanic that prepped it. I picked it up yesterday with 4 miles on the odometer and 91 mph recorded top speed on the display. Asshole move, especially if he was the one that did it.

I trust very few people with my stuff.

I loaned my boat to a member here Jdub and it was perfectly fine, but I've known him for 20+ years. I don't mind loaning my boat to friends that know the ropes, but would never loan it to a rookie.

For the record I did not ask to borrow my current boat. My friend offered knowing I was bringing the kids. He got into boating cause of me and I showed him how to operate 1.

Yes,..... but the list is fuckin short bro, and you can be rest assured anyone on that list can foot the bill for a fuckup.

If I had a 10K beat up 76 witchcraft jet bote it would be one thing, and I wouldnt give a shit.

One of my rigs is brutally expensive, and exceptionally nice, and is faster than 90% of the shit on the lake/river/ocean
The other one is smaller and faster than 99+% of the shit on any lake and will easily kill you if you dont know what you are doing.

I've been been burned, and at the same time I recognize that sometimes shit happens....

When I was a kid I borrowed a friends car.
While I was standing there a back wing window slid off the mount and hit the ground while the car was parked sitting in the sun.
Did I do it? No, but it happened on my watch.

As someone else said if they have the means to make it right AND I trust you, no sweat I'll toss you the keys. These people know how OCD I am with my stuff and they are equally as well with theirs.
IF I have to ask to borrow something, truck , trailer or something like that they know I am stuck between a rock and a hard place. I can't see me ever asking to borrow someones boat because shit does happen and personally I would feel responsible for any damage regardless if it was my fault or not.
As a teenager I needed a car to go to work one night as mine was in the garage torn down. My Dad was working on their car so I was stuck. He asked his friend if I could borrow his new truck. Early 80s chevy with the diesel engine. On my way home from work just outside of town it made a bang and started running rough and I looked at the oil pressure gauge and it said 10 PSI. I drove it a mile to the house and told Dad. He told his friend he was driving it when it screwed up. Turned out it broke the crankshaft and stuck itself back together. Man I felt bad but it was a manufacturers issue with that engine.

We've had plenty of friends ask to borrow our family's toys. My dad is nicer than i am and has let a few people take stuff out. Two seasons ago we were out riding in glamis and two friends wanted to take out our can ams and follow us on a ride (they have driven before and claim to be "badass" drivers). One dune in the first driver rolls the can am down a dune and totals it. towed it back to camp and took back off on our ride. 5 dunes in the second driver rolls his can am down a dune and totals it. needless to say we do not let anyone borrow or even drive anything we own. thank god for insurance:rolleyes:

I have friends that can use my stuff and I can use theirs, and I have friends that no way in hell would I let them borrow my stuff.

I’ve let friends take my boats out. We also take turns being sober sometimes. So someone else gets to drive for the day. Its not that deep. If it was gonna break, it was gonna break. If you bang it off a dock or rocks, well then you can fix what you fuck up. We don’t smoke, wear shoes, drink messy drinks in out boats, so no worries there.

Its not that deep to me, but I drive peoples boats every week.

The friends that I will loan my stuff to are people I know will fix it if something happens and vice versa. I borrow a buddy’s toy hauler all the time and always end up fixing something on it that he’s fucked up.

There is one, maybe two people on this planet that I would consider loaning my boat too but they understand that the deal is "you break it, you bought it".

I have one friend that I would loan anything to. He has proven to me over the years that he can operate almost anything I can, as well as I can, with the same competence.

He also has the means to replace or repair anything that got fucked up.

Boats, bikes, guns, vehicles, I'd let him borrow anything but my girl.

He's the sole exception however. Anytime I loan anything to someone it invariably comes back damaged in some way, I have come to just accept it as part of the "no good deed goes unpunished" mantra.

Sorry, NO.

I knew a day would come... when my son reached an age that seemed to possibly be appropriate to use havasu house and boat when I wasn’t there. I think he knew better than to even ask, however a girl he was dating didn’t seem to think it was a big deal so she asked. I counted to ten and told her no, but they would be welcome to join us when we were using it. Oh, and she gone, he landed a way bigger fish [emoji3]

The list of folks I trust to drive my boat is very short, and everyone on that list has their own stuff. The rest know not to ask. I'm generally willing to let people borrow tools and such if I trust that person would let me borrow stuff as well.

Honestly with high performance stuff it's a safety issue. Without a lot of seat time it's just too dangerous to me.

I have one friend I would let borrow mine. He has spent almost as much time helping me work on it as I have.

Him I trust anybody else, you'd have a better chance of getting miley Cyrus to suck your dick.

Driving my boat at speed takes a lot of steering input once in the secondaries. It’s like flying a plane. You’ve got to come off the throttle slowly and take steering out of it at the same time. I’ve only got my BIL that has a TT schiada that I’d let him have it for the weekend.

Some of the best days on the water were you or SML driving my boats. It is all about respect.

There was that time I did dent a rub rail on one of your boats :)

Lol. My wife isn’t even allowed to use it and she is actually decent at driving it - just afraid to get back into the slip. She now wants me to buy her an older whaler and restore it so she can use it with her friends. Maybe I get a new boat out of it [emoji12].

Only person I would remotely consider loaning it to is my Dad who is just as anal about keeping his boat nice as I am...

This one is interesting to me. I dont have a Son, but I feel I would definitely be OK with them using my house I would think? Alot of my friends have river houses because for that reason, they inherited it. Boat is a seperate discussion as I can see that is case by case.

There are many on this forum that could responsibly borrow a members boat and treat it like there own. I personally have no problem with lending a boat to one of my long term boating friends that I trust. At least my boating friends have boating knowledge..... unlike many of my relatives. Riverdave comes to mind as someone I wouldn’t think twice about borrowing any of my toys.

(Of course I have written the above with hopes Dave will lend me his boat the next time I am in Havasu! Lol)

We have friends who asked to use our Havi house while we weren’t there ... gave them the key and said enjoy! They asked again and we said okay let’s meet up so you can grab the key. Friend said “I already made a copy of your key” 😳🤯😳 That was awkward... 🤣

Besides my immediate family, I would let my Brother and Nephews borrow stuff. My brother lends me his stuff all of the time, so I suppose I have a debt to pay!

Some of the answers in this thread are hilarious since it implies only the owner of the boat has the special skills needed to operate it correctly.

I am a fully licensed delivery captain in Florida. It is not uncommon for me to move a multi-million dollar yacht for someone I have only spoken to over the phone for a few minutes and is trusting me to take care of his pride and joy. This is so common where I live. I have many customers, since I also move new boats for the major south Florida boat shows.

There are many on this site that also have the skills to do what I do. This is a boating forum.

So..... not only are you lending me your boat..... but you are paying me to take it! Think about that! That’s why this thread is funny to me. Not everyone is an idiot!

Even though my boat is a beater, probably not. Specially since it has no reverse. I would let my dad take it if he asked cause he grew up with my grandpa's flatty that had no transmission so he knows how to handle a boat without reverse. Although, the last time I let him take it out with my mom was at Parker and he ended up spinning a prop hub way up river. That was the first time I had spun a hub so I didnt have an extra on hand or a spare prop at that time. Had to throw my uncle's spare prop on for the rest of the weekend. I still give him shit for that.

My dirt bike though, if someone has decent experience riding dirt bikes and wants to try their hand at throwing a leg over the KX500, they are welcome to it. I like to hear their stories afterwards.

HAHA!

We have a couple of friends that have 2nd homes in Havi. I know all their door and alarm codes, hell, one of them set it up with my own code. I don't take that lightly though, it's amazing to have friends like that. That trust you with everything.

We are looking for our own house there now and I'll be happy to pass that forward to a couple of friends and family members.

Edit*: They will never take money from us either (tried and failed multiple times lol) So we always try and restock everything. Paper towels, TP, Cleaning supplies, aluminum foil, zip locks, shit like that. Leave a case or bottle of whatever beer/alcohol they like.

There is probably one person who I would still trust with my boats after the party incident and it's a different coworker. He on multiple occasions insisted that I "exercised" his scarab for him. With his family, he wasn't able to use it much and hated seeing it sit. He just sold it last season at which point I think I put 45 of the last 50 hours on it. He's welcome to any of my boats any time he wants but he's been craving the pontoon life lately and I dont have one of those🤪

Many years ago a friend lent me his new to him, un-insured 26' sanger tahoe after he and his wife and me and my then g.f., now wife had been out on mohave lake itogether with it for their maiden voyage. The boat ran well but would heat up a bit at times, certain conditions etc. At the end of the weekend they had to go home but we were staying a couple more days in the laughlin area. We had used my C-1500 truck to launch it since he didn't have a capable vehicle yet. At the end of the weekend he says to me..hey why don't you guys just use the boat for the couple days your here and drop it back in storage when done. I was rather uncomfortable with the idea for all the various reasons specifically the ones afore mentioned here. He kept after me about using and I finally relented and accepted. I was very nervous the entire 2 days we had it. We spent the night on it in a cove moored off shore and between the heat and my concern for something mysteriously happening in the night like wind etc. I hardly slept. It was a good time but I was very relieved when we put it back in storage clean and unscathed. Almost wasn't worth the it....
Occaisionally People make similar type offers, I respectfully decline as I don't like the anxious feelings I have with the burden of responsibility.

I borrowed a buddy's dump trailer one time to do a small job for my wifes uncle. As a thank you and "rental payment" I put a new battery in it so the hyd. Pump would run, weld repaired a couple tie downs and hinges on it, repaired the rear jacks that support the rear of the bed when loading a tractor into it etc., sourced and replaced the tounge jack gears so you could safely raise the tounge to mount to hitch ball etc.
He was very thankful and appreciative of my considerations. It was much better when returned than when received.

About ten years ago I loaned my brand new truck to a "friend." He brought it back with a big scratch in the bumper. I said, "Dude what the fuck happened to the bumper?" His response was fucking amazing.........He said, "Bro, don't act like it's a Benzo or something." No longer my friend and no, I would never loan my boat to anyone.

i have a hard time asking to borrow anything. however lotsa years ago i did ask a coworker to borrow his vw sandrail for a season at glamis. he had stopped going and his kid had broke a ton of shit on the car and it didnt run well, so i made him the offer of ill repair everything that needs repaired and anyhting that broke while i was using it. that deal worked out great for both of us and it ultimately ended up being bought by my brother for his first sandcar several year later.

i have had several people offer up what ever they have, but i rarely take them up on it. the few times i have, the owner was present and they really just wanted my opinion of how the car/boat drove.

as far as me lending my junk out.. i typically wont lend people stuff since i worry more about it breaking down and then them having to deal with that headache... not so much as they damage it etc. i worry about my equipment causing an inconvenience for them really. but there are some people id have no problem letting use my shit.

my flatbed trialer has been passed around like a vegas hooker, it ugly, heavy, and if you borrow it you will probably have to put a tire on it at some point. only stipulation if someone borrows it is, bring it back, and with all tires holding air. im not paying for tires etc if they fail on you thats just part of the assumed risk in borrowing it lol.

I have a very short list of people I would trust with my toys/boats/vehicles... and not necessarily because I'm a very nice person but strictly the fact that they would and have offered up things in the past when I've been down a toy or whatever.

Example: I had a trip planned to glamis, truck was in the dealer expected to be ready the day before trip... well dealer screwed me and no truck. Good friend of mine offered up his new superduty without hesitation so I wouldn't have to ruin a trip.

I said fuck it and took it.... and it didn't fail someones jack ass kid kissed the bed with his 110 bars and left a skidmark and a small dent in the bed side. So before it got brought back it went to a PDR guy and a fresh detail and only reason he knew is because I asked if he could tell where the dent was.

I have a very short list of people that I would trust to borrow my boat and both of them do not want the responsibility of borrowing it because of how I am. They rarely drive my boat when I am with them and offer for them to drive. That being said my little brother (one of the two people I trust) will let me borrow his boat anytime I want because it was mine first and he knows that anything that happens will be taken care of no questions asked but I will very rarely borrow it in general.

When it comes to truck, tools or trailers I am more easy going so the list gets a little long of people I trust to borrow stuff but still stays in the single digits. Dont have too many crazy stories of loaning stuff out but I will say my flat bed trailer has had the tongue jack ripped off of it multiple time by my older brother so I pretty much quit fixing it until I am ready to completely rebuild it and quit loaning it out.

I was never into lending out boats. The one time I did was to my Dad. From the time I could remember Dad always had a boat and taught me about boats. So, if this is the guy that taught you everything you know he's gotta be the "be all, end all" of operating a boat. (One would think).

So it's a late 90s Nordic Scandia MCOB and Dads out on the lake trying to put up the Bimini top. In that model boat you have to move the Bimini mounts from the riding position mounts to the raise the top mounts. Dad had no idea and forced it up in the riding mounts. He was trying to clip in the front straps with the Bimini frame against the plexy glass wrap around windscreens. Well they finally snapped. So, off to Nordic for new windscreens. I can't remember exactly what that mistake cost but I believe it was north of 3k.

No boat lending going on over here.

I don't borrow or lend things. At all.

This thread reminds me of the time (probably 25 years ago) I was spending the night at my cousin's in Vegas. He started buying real estate in college and became supremely wealthy. I wanted to go to a convenience store down the street, and he tossed me the key to his literally brand new giant Mercedes sedan.

It was dark, I got in, the dome light didn't come on, and I couldn't even find the keyhole to start the damn thing. I got out, went back inside, and told him "Give me the keys to your Suburban". I figured only bad things could come from me driving the Benz, and I could afford to repair the Chevy. 🤪

I don’t have a problem with the kids using the house. Our in-laws have used it a few times already. That’s what it’s there for. As long as everything is in good shape when we show up it’s all good. The boat is another story. I’m currently looking for something they can use. Sea Doo’s scare me, an inexpensive pontoon seems to be a pipe dream. Your boat is badass but even with their boating experience it’s probably a little too much. I can’t believe my dad used to let me use his 24’-ish Reinell in Canyon Lake. I was 16 with very little experience. He had it on the docks at the condo. Used it anytime we wanted to.

As my insurance agent, can I loan my boat out to a friend and be covered if there was an incident?
