IF you are going to run a clutch cover vs an open clutch - put a bilge blower in line to move some air through it.

UD

Uhhhh NO!!!!! Maybe I'm reading this wrong? But if you DO have a clutch cover, you do NOT want a bilge blower on there!!

Only ever seen a decrease in temp running a blower - (as long as its hardwired on)

The boondocker full cover has a built in blower....

ANY bilge blower CAN NOT move any where the CFM that the oem clutches can move....

at what RPM?

all the data Ive seen (and on the car I drove with an IR belt gauge and blower in it) - is that the blower cools better to 7/8 throttle and is no worse at WOT.

Net net it cooled better at lower RPM and the same at WOT.

There are tons of RZR forum posts about this.

You always have good feedback and seem to have tons of experience - so you must be seeing different results than Im seeing.

Why would boondocker put a fan on the cover if it didn't work, and places like Alba sell in line fan kits if they dont?

Heres an interesting thread.

I can't speak for them, but I can promise you a bilge blower isn't the answer to the clutch problem. Proper clutching is the long term answer and it's not that difficult. Heat is the #1 enemy to a UTV belt.

Oh - I never said it was a total "solution" it helps though.

Thats why I bought a new clutching system.

If a cheap ass fan solved the problem I wouldnt have dropped 1700 on a Ripp tied kit.

Are you saying it doenst help at all?

I've logged 5000+ miles in a Polaris the last 4 years at WOT basically, with no bilge blower. No competitors run a bilge blower. It only restricts air flow.

Yes. We were sponsored by STM for about 6 races. No doubt they provide huge results, they admittedly, just couldn't stand up to Desert racing conditions though.

I honestly couldn't tell you what's in there. It gets adjusted based upon RPMs every race.

4 seat turned 2 seater.

Sweet! (I wanna ride)

You guys have no doubt made many changes that help belt life.

Are you runny a factory secondary- or something like a team secondary ?

Shoot over a pict of your cover. Im curious what you guys use.

So the problem is more BRP than just a cvt issue in general?.

Kind of hard to say .... one brand seems to be terrible on belts and then get it fixed then another brand has the problem blow up.
BRP was absolutely horrendous for 4 or 5 years then got better (they were shamed into it .... by aftermarket companies that were offering frame stiffeners and braces that go between the engine and secondary support bearings)
In the past two or three years, Cat has been just about as bad as BRP was.

A BRP belt for a sled is about $200 around here. How much is a SxS belt?

I think the bilge blowers help most after you shut the machine down. Having a bilge blower on a timer for 5 minutes would keep the belt from getting burned from heat soak.

I saw $170 for an oem belt. Everyone says oem only. Can Am made some changes for 2016 that they say should help a belt last longer. I guess I'm going to find out one way or another.

Polaris's are extremely popular around here and I don't see very many of the others so for resale I would go with the Polaris.

From what I have been reading, the Polaris Turbos seem to cook their clutch drives. The Can Am Turbos like to cook belts. The Can Am dealer says the belt is now easier to change, but the rear seat and some panels still have to be removed. I wish the RZR 1000 had the same suspension as the turbo. That would make this decision easier. I have no problem going with a nonturbo if that means alot less problems.

Do most of you run drive belt temp gauges?

Quicksilver, we race Can Ams both here in the States as well as Baja and I can tell you that the Turbo model is super fast and the new clutch set up does not burn belts like the old version does. We ran the whole Baja 500 on the same belt and put that car through hell!
Obviously I am biased but I would suggest a Turbo Can Am with an LSR or S3 suspension upgrade and a shock re-valve and you would have a bullet proof suspension on a super fast car that feels good to drive.
Good luck, either choice you will be happy you made it!!

Ya know, there is something about buying a 20k toy and having to have the mindset that it's OK that it eats up a $100 - $150 part constantly.

Personally, I'd go with a Yamaha and put (or if they off) a centrifugal clutch. Like the recluse for a dirt bike. Best of both worlds.

Yes. Supposedly the 2016 Can Am is better than the 2015 as far as belts go.

I can remember my dad telling me years ago I'd be better off flushing my money down the toilet than owning a boat. But I have had many good, memorable times on that boat. I have no regrets for the spending the money on it. Hopefully I can say the same thing years from now about the UTV as well.

in 2012 I had to have kidney removed because of cancer - when I was laying in bed about to be put under not sure if id wake up again - i was not bummed I spent money on boats and toys because I had tons of fun and made awesome memories with friends and family.

The last thing on my mind was " I should have saved more money".

Enjoy your new toy.

Hope to go riding with you in 2016!

What a great perspective. I've never understood people who try to apply investment logic to toys. Boating and offroading is expensive, but participating in a lifestyle that relaxes and de-stresses me is priceless.
