I ordered grub hub today and the guy delivering was wearing dress slacks, shirt & tie. He clearly had worked a full day at the office and was crushing some delivery’s after work for some extra cash. I got a lot of respect for that. Lots of guys driving Uber on nights and weekends for extra cash. There are lots of opportunities to make extra money these days. Pretty cool actually.

Unless you have a nice vehicle in a very metropolitan area I just wonder how much $$ you could actually make on these deals?

I always wonder the same thing.

I use Uber a lot and most of these people have no sense of depreciation or maintenance costs on their vehicle. They just see that “cool I got $100 deposited today.” They forgot about the fact their vehicle depreciated by $25, they spent $20 on fuel, and $5 in accrued maintenance. Cool, so you made $50 for you 4 hours worth of work. Enjoy your $12.50 an hour

Edit- but I appreciate two things:
1- they’re trying
2- it’s better for me than taxis :D

From what I have heard from others that tried it. Its a location and a timing thing. You pretty much make all of your money on Friday and Saturday nights. If you like cold beverages this is exactly when you don't want to be at work.

Everyone I know is just doing the Uber / Lyft thing for some extra cash. For them it's better than a second job because they can set their own hours. Second jobs typically don't pay well either ya know. I agree with meto areas. Here in Long Beach it's always busy.

I don’t use them very much, but it sure beats delivering pizzas.....

I think it’s great for someone to do in their spare time, I noticed older retired men and women driving for something to do and to make extra cash.
Theres definitely a sweet spot for demand with higher earning potential

A desert storm we got ubered by a guy who came down from Kingman. He said on holidays and game weekends he'll drive to Phoenix. Weird thing was he was driving like a 92 Buick.

Sounds like you got a shady Uber driver cause they have an age limit on vehicles to maintain quality and reliability.

I see a lot priuses when I Uber. I think people pick them up on the cheap and they are cheap to operate. I too would be curious to know how much these guys make. I just think it’s cool to able to make a little extra cash if need be by doing something simple with a fairly low barrier of entry.

A couple of years ago I ubered to my work Christmas party in downtown riverside, my driver said he used to own a taxi company and he makes way more money doing Uber because he knows where all the hot spots are and operates during surge pricing times. Apparently he can clear almost 1,000 a night during the holiday weekends.

It all depends on location. One Uber was bragging about making $300 a day for desert storm which I guess is good for Havasu. Post up in Hermosa beach and probably make $5-600 on a Saturday.

I drove Uber a lot this winter. I wanted to make some extra cash to put a new stereo in my boat. I called it my side hustle! But with all the rain we had, I was driving to pay bills ( I work construction). I would make $200-300 on weeknights and up to $400 on weekends.
I notice Uber in Havasu is crazy expensive. From the Hampton inn to sams beachcomber was $18.60. That would be about a $9 ride in SoCal.

How much more do they tack on for grub hub delivery?

You don't really get to choose your vehicle with UBER, driver shows up in a shit box all you can do is refuse the ride or leave a bad rating. I'm usually too drunk to refuse the ride, so into the back of the 89 Sentra i go.....

It is amazing what Uber and Lyft have done to the taxi industry. With the exception of Japanese taxis, Ubers are a whole better experience.

My first Uber ride was in Phoenix about 3 years ago. The lady driver said she used to dispatch at a local Big cab company.
She said that she crushed most of the other drivers in earnings because she knew exactly when and where demand was due to her dispatch experience.
She wouldn’t tell me what she made, but she was adamant (like all of them) that I gave her 5 Stars.

That’s $52k annually with no time off...before taxes.
A used, fairly new Prius costs what?
Plus fuel and maintenance.
If you can hustle for a few years with no major outlay it might make sense.

It sort of reminds me of a customer of mine in Alaska who retired and then became a Mac tool truck owner/ driver.

After a year or so I asked him how he was doing with the tool truck.
He said “I basically bought myself a job”...

Grub hub charges $5. I also gave the driver an $7 tip on $32.50 worth of food. It’s not cheap, I don’t use it too often.
Not bad to get some variety rather than the traditional shitty pizza.. :D

Is it? At least when your a pizza driver, you have a min wage paying job with a designated route you have to stay within. Imagine being the lyft or Uber driver that gets stuck picking up my friends in Jurupa just to find out you have to drive all the way out to Newport, hb, lb and even Hollywood on occasion? How about vice versa? Imagine on being the lyft or Uber driver that's banking on taking advantage of surge pricing around town just to find out you have to drive out to bfe? Lol

I had an Uber driver in San Francisco who drove from Fresno every Thursday. He would drive Thursday through Sunday, slept in his car, and had a gym membership for showers.

Sunday he drove back to his family in Fresno...to the house he owned there. I get it, it is Fresno but not a bad business plan.

A buddy of mine drives in Palm Springs. He said he makes a shit ton doing LAX runs. He was surprised how many trips he made out there.
