Its taken me a couple days to get online but did anyone else come home around 2pm Wed 7/6 from Havie or Parker on higway 62 from Vidal to Desert Center. The road seemed actually quiet but coming home just past the 2ed set of train tracks as it starts to curve a Dodge minnie van and a white Malibu hit head on. No police or ambulance on scean but about a dozen good smaritans had stopped and the lady in the car did not seem conscious but breathing and the I was too scared to approach the minnie van but people had blankets over it. With that many people on scean my kids were freaking so I did not stay. Then just past the stop sign only 20mins farther heading down towards Desert Center was another one with a 4 runner and a truck but they did not hit head on, however the 4 runner went off the road and rolled. The lady was going to be ok but really cut from glass. No police or emergency on scene yet there either. That road is starting to scare the crap out of me and I'm thinking the 40 is the way to go. Anyone else usually see carnage like this on this road before. Its very disturbing because its so hard to get an ambulance out to the middle of that road.

My cousins wife's family was heading out to Parker about 20 years ago to stay at my uncle's place and they never made it. Head on collision. That was right around the time Sam Kinison died on his way to Laughlin. That road is scary sometimes when you think of all the stupid twists and sweeping turns it has. :skull

Same here Bobby. I've had a few very close calls on Rice road. I've avoided it for quite some time. About 2 months ago I was on my way home from Havi on a Monday. My friend talked me into taking Rice Road and before I even hit the agricultural check we had already had one near miss cause of someone making a pass over a double yellow. I looked at my friend and said "now you know why I avoid this road" Doubt I'll be on it again unless I absolutely have to.

I have been lucky on Rice Rd. I go to Havasu that way all the time since I live in Yucaipa and it's about 40 min shorter. You really have be on he defense on that road your right about that. The only road out there that claims more lives, as far as I know is Kelbaker Rd off the 40.

When I go to Parker from Santa Clarita I always go through Needles and Havasu and all that. Its definitely a lot longer of a drive and my friends give me crap for it but that way has a lot more lanes to drive on (except through Victorville). I don't care that it takes longer, the drive is more safe and I would rather get there alive then take a header on Rice Road

Same here, always have gone 177/62 to get there. I am always 'on guard' for someone to make a stupid move. Watch the people closely who are behind approaching semi's or swingin wide around the bends, shit like that. If you drive at reasonable speeds and keep your attention on the road (and your surroundings) its as safe as any other road. A lot of drivers get careless because they're out where they believe they are less likely to be caught haulin ass, pretending to be Ricky-Bobby. :p

My last trip to Parker, I took Rice Road from Desert Center and the Indian Road thru Blythe on the way home..........12 minutes longer thru Blythe. Y'all can have Rice Road to yourselves, you won't find me on it!

I burn a lot less diesel going that route as well :thumbsup

Way less stress, just set the cruise control, a lot less traffic to deal with.

We took Rice Rd for years and had several close calls until one day when we were involved in a head on in our motorhome. My whole family walked away. The other guy that crossed the line was not so lucky. Never again will my family take Rice Rd. After leaving the hospital in Parker we went through Erenberg because the family was afraid of Rice rd. and i could not get over how much safer it felt. All the roads are dangerous and you have to stay on your game when driving but to say Rice rd is as safe as any other is ABSURD!! Look at the stats.

Never ceases to amaze me the inability for some to comprehend the time saved driving like an asshole, the time from Desert Center to Vidal is about 1 hr 2 mins averaging 65MPH, the time is about 48 minutes averaging 85MPH...

Thats about 14 minutes folks, 14 fuckin minutes, does that make you sick how many lives have been lost on Rice rd to save some dumb fuck 14 minutes, thats less time than the family spends at AM/PM buying potato chips!!

I wish they would post a sign at each end of the road telling people that...14 minutes...holy shit that makes me sick!!

The worst part is the punk flat billers with there 12 inch lifted F350's towing their 28 ft deck boat, passing everything on the road...

I would love to see the speed vs distance meters like those used at a lot of toll roads back east, car is identified at one end via camera, and again at the other end of the road, arrive too quick, and viola, you get a ticket!!!

14 fukkin minutes!!! Come on....

I use to drive Rice Road every time and now I have beening going the 15 to the 40. I was at 70mph and a guy came flying buy pulling a boat. It is real scary for the people coming the other direction. One problem with the truck or trailer and hell is happen very quickly. We have come across some really horrible accident and helped out (wife is a nurse). Seems like people keep driving faster and faster.

Your right on all counts. Only problem with your theory as it relates to the speed vs. meters issue is, that in the California Veh Code, thats how they describe a "speed trap". Can you imagine the hue and cry..
