If you drive a large vehicle in California, you could face an extra fee depending on its weight.

A bill crafted by assembly member Chris Ward, a San Diego Democrat, would require the California Transportation Commission to submit a study looking into the costs of levying a weight fee for heavy vehicles to pay for street safety improvement projects.

AB 251 would require the CTC to create a task force to study the relationship between vehicle weight and "injuries to vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists," according to the bill's text.

Currently, a drivers' registration fee is based on the general value of the car or truck.

Whether this bill passes doesn't affect the weather 🤣

California already has a weight fee. Applies to all ‘commercial’ vehicles, including every pickup.

Few ways around it, but generally not worth the hassle.

Edit, Yeah what these guys said! 🤣

“We know there are studies suggesting fatality rates can be higher for crashes involving heavier vehicles –– especially models weighing several thousand pounds,” said Ward in a statement on Thursday. “AB 251 will look further into the relationship between vehicle weight and injuries to help inform policy in the future.”

AB 251 is expected to be heard in the Assembly Transportation Committee later this month. Should it pass and later influence a new weight fee for car registrations, California would join 14 other states and the District Columbia in adding new weight fees. Fees in these states currently range from only $25 a year to $500 a year.

"several thousand pounds" ??? you mean like a Corolla?

Now I fear for my old Yukon's registration, I only keep it because it's cheaper to register than a pick up truck!
----
The 2023 budget the D.C. Council approved includes a provision that raises the annual registration fee for most vehicles. The provision would take effect in 2024.

Owners of vehicles that weigh more than 6,000 pounds will have to pay $500 per year. That's more than triple the $155 that those owners currently pay.

Maybe the mfg will start giving us lighter cars now... A modern Lotus 7 (or 11) would be nice!

I’ll bet you the money goes directly to the general fund , this is the bank account that funds pensions and salaries. Ca is facing a major pension shortage and not one news source will mention it . 80% of money taken in through taxes and fees goes to pensions and salaries, and Ca govt has grown exponentially . I would love to see it implode .

This new Lib Law is also going to affect larger SUV's. Another way to make more bucks for our needy border jumpers who can't afford a car yet.

There wouldn't be pension shortages if these fuckheads would have kept up with the contributions they set up to begin with. They fucked it up, just like deferred maintenance on roads, dams etc. The money was used for social programs and hand outs. In other words, buying votes.

We used to pull the rear bumpers, spare tire and mount, jack and tools, rear seats, etc. on pickups before weighing and registering in California. Charged the dealer pretty good money to R & I all that stuff. Must have been worth it.

OTR trucks are responsible for 99.9% of road damage caused by vehicles.

This is just a way to tax heavy vehicles.
Because heavy vehicles are owned by people with deep pockets.

Not to hijack the thread since this is related (taxes), why are bicyclists not taxed or required to be registered but able to fully occupy entire lanes of streets?

San Diego is ran by far left libs. They are now proposing a mileage “fee” (taxes have to be approved).

You cannot make this stuff up.

He hates CA. Just looking for ways to express it.

No need to shoot the messenger. The facts are the facts. And California is always looking for more ways to tax its residents.

I didn't "hate" California - just didn't want to live there anymore so I moved out.

How's that weather?

Wearing shorts and a t shirt.

They did raise it 4 or 5 years ago 50%. My 3500 trucks were $800 when new. Went up to $1200. Just paid $856 on 1 that is 7 years old. It was $800 when new. Weight fee is already majority of the cost. Guess maybe they want to raise it again. 🤷

Are the bigger SUV's considered 'Commercial' in CA ...?
I've never owned one that's why I ask.
Maybe the state is looking to target those.

Losing a lot of $$ on gasoline tax. And with their push to EV's, it's only going to get worse.

Hence the reason for the weight fees, the usage/mileage fees, and at least here, raised cost for registration on the EV's/hybrids.

Yes, but in most other states, you do not have to register your pickup truck as a commercial vehicle.
Or my Chevy G30 EXT van, Dodge B350 MH Cabin Cruiser, both well over 3 tons dry, the Mexican Dodge Ram 1500, Dogvan B250, all $78, including the yearly vehicle inspection. Could not maintain the Fleet, in California, no way.
Hockley County. 30 miles West of Lubbock. Lubbock has grown by 100,000 residents in less than 10 years.
God Bless West Texas. Oil, Cotton, Construction are King. Big trucks! Flat ground, no rock. No smog check, no traffic. SFH's @ $100 per sq ft.

Tomorrow, it will be blowing dirt @ 50 MPH, but, all the Kid's here say Ma'am, and Sir...:D

Someone pee in your Cheerios again today?

Glad I can make your days brighter. By the way, our weather is likely nicer than yours and I wear t-shirt, shorts and flips every day 🥳
